Request
The dataset is in txt format. When downloaded, the data is proving difficult to clean. Is there a way to get a CSV format instead?
I'm referring to the Property Address Directory - specifically I'm looking to access the alias data in this file.
Looking to access address aliases to improve address matching.
Response
Thank you for contacting the Department of City Planning (DCP). The PAD file is too large for excel, we are not sure if that is why you are requesting a csv over the txt file. If you are trying to load the data into excel you should break the txt file into at least two files, in order to load it into excel (excel row limit = 1,048,576, bobaaddr.txt contains 1,320,685 rows).
Once you break the file down into smaller files, if you wanted to load it into Excel do the following:
1. Go to Data tab and click From Text/CSV
2. Import Data window opens, navigate to where you stored the PAD txt file (bobaaddr.txt, bobabbl.txt, etc.) and click import
3. New data preview window will open, make sure Delimiter is set to comma, click load
4. Data will load into excel (this will take a few minutes)
If you have further questions please reach out to DCPopendata@planning.nyc.gov.
Thank you,
