Good morning NYPD GIS,

My name is *****, a Deputy U.S. Marshal assigned to our Investigations program. Additionally, I am a member of our geospatial team. We have an upcoming enforcement operation slated to take place in your city beginning ***** and we are building out a GIS Dashboard to support the Operation. Among other things included in the Dashboard we are hoping to bring in some state/local crime data from NYC and surrounding areas to display for situational awareness purposes for teams on the ground. Feel free to reach out at any time to discuss further. Of the other 19 participating Cities throughout the US they have provided us with 1 years worth of part crime data down to the actual address as well as shot spotter data. I'd be happy to discuss further.

The dashboard tool will be used by all participating, vetted- federal state and local officers. It is powerful in pre-operational planning, situational awareness and officer safety of all participants.

Hi,
I need information regarding the amount of multi-family unit buildings in NYC and where they are located.
Thank you!
Response
The Department of City Planning (DCP) publishes the PLUTO (tabular) and MapPLUTO (spatial) datasets, which are Citywide tax lots that contain property information, including building code and land use type. Please consult the data dictionary for more information about each field, especially Appendix C: Building Code and Appendix D: Land Use categories.

Building Class:
B-Two family dwellings
C-Walk up apartments
D-Elevator Buildings

Land Use:
01 - One & Two Family buildings
02 - Multi-Family Walk-up buildings
03 - Multi-Family Elevator buildings

There is also a Residential Units field that you can filter for more than 1.

You may also want to consult our zoning information for zoning district data that allows multi-dwelling unit buildings (see R3 - R10).

I need data on all restaurants in New York City. NAME, ADDRESS, Opening date, in business, out of business, etc.

I want to answer several questions, one of them is which area do restaurants open or close early or are more likely to go out of business?

I have many questions I need to answer with the data.

I just need the link, I will write the query myself.
Response
The information you are looking for is not maintained by NYC Open Data as it is not a data request. For information requests (documents, correspondence, etc.) we encourage you to submit a FOIL request via Open Records. If you would like to proceed with a request, please let us know and we will send over next steps.

FOIL stands for the Freedom of Information Law. The New York State Freedom of Information Law requires government agencies to provide records to the public upon request. Government records affect the lives of each New Yorker, and providing easy access to the records makes government work better. The FOIL definition of records is very broad and includes information found in paper and electronic documents and audio and visual recordings. All records are available upon request, unless an exception in FOIL permits an agency to deny access to a record. Learn more about FOIL requests via this Frequently Asked Questions page.

I am looking for disaggregated data on the number of applications, cases, recipients and expenditures of the Rent Freeze Program that is administered by the New York City Department of Finance. I would like to access this dataset at the census tract level, between 2002 and 2020, if possible, at a monthly frequency. Currently, this dataset does not seem to be available as open source. I would like to access a dataset that would include the number of applications, cases, and recipients, decomposed between the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) program and the Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE program) per census tract, in each month since 2002. Data on the number of recipients has been published in a 2022 report by sub-borough available online at 2022-scrie_drie_report.pdf

Is there a dataset that has all the houses of worship in NYC?

TY

I am looking to understand the volume/density of houses or worship across the city by neighborhood and borough.
Response
The Department of City Planning (DCP) is not aware of an official, comprehensive list of all houses of worship in NYC. The closest data available is PLUTO or MapPLUTO, which are respectively, tabular and spatial datasets of all tax lots in NYC. PLUTO/MapPLUTO contains a building class field, which is a code describing the major use of structures on the tax lot. You can read more about the building class field in the PLUTO data dictionary.

If you filter the Building Class field for M* (using a wildcard) you will have a list of all tax lots in NYC with a building class code for houses of worship and other religious buildings:

M. CHURCHES, SYNAGOGUES, ETC.
1. Church, Synagogue, Chapel
2. Mission House (Non-Residential)
3. Parsonage, Rectory
4. Convents
9. Miscellaneous

This is not necessarily a comprehensive of list but is the best option available when using public data.

Hi, I submitted the following request for a dataset several weeks ago but have received no response to the request:

Weekly or monthly School-level Student COVID-19 Vaccine data from June 2021 to last available date. There are six files currently available in NYC Open Data containing school-level data on student COVID-19 vaccinations, but we would like to obtain these data at more regular intervals, if possible.

How do I follow up with this request?

We are working on a research proposal related to school-located vaccine programs and are examining questions related to equitable vaccine distribution in non-traditional healthcare settings (e.g., schools).
Response
Thanks again for your patience here. Our contacts at the Department of Education require that you request this data via their Infohub site. They will be able to accommodate your request directly through that channel.

We will close out both of your requests sent to the Open Data HelpDesk, since they are related. Should you have any more questions about this process or would like to request more data, please send us a new inquiry via our contact page.

We would like to gain more years of the NYPD Calls for Service dataset. May we have the dataset for the years 2013-2017?

We would also like the same years for the NYPD Complaint Historic dataset.

We are looking to use NYC as a project that investigates how George Floyd's murder impacted 911 calls and crime incidences in major cities of the USA.
Response
Thank you for your inquiry. The NYPD Historic Complaint data goes back to 2006.
The Calls for Service goes back to 2018. Prior years are not readily accessible in our current system and would require a FOIL request. We encourage you to submit a FOIL request via Open Records: https://a860-openrecords.nyc.gov/

We're working with OMB to redo their agency website. They've mentioned that the data is also available here on OpenData.

Questions:
1. Is it possible to embed some of the visualizations on the OMB site? Michael Greenberg has indicated that the Expense Data Set is the most popular.
2. How is the data fed from OMB? Is it available the moment the new budget is released or is there a delay?

Thanks!

Number of currently Active complaints in the DOB system, The current data shows all entry's however it does not allow to filter for active complaints that have not been resolved.

There is a category called Status, however it is only the status of the entry and not the current status of the complaint, Complaints are either Active or resolved and there is no filter in the current data to see these numbers.

Hello,
Do you have a data set that shows absentee landlords? This would be any landlord that does not live in the area of the property they own - i.e. out of state.

Morgan Stanley is providing consulting services to help Neighborhood Housing Services of Brooklyn try to launch its affordable property management program. They want to target absentee landlords as potential customers.
Response
Thank you for your inquiry. The exact information you are looking for is not available as a dataset, but here are some methods you can attempt to get the information you need:

- Registration Information (Multiple Dwelling Registrations & Registration Contacts): These datasets are derived from HPD’s Property Registration Online System and include some level of ownership data. The two should be merged on ‘RegistrationID’ so that you can connect ‘BuildingID’ to the ownership information. You should specify ‘Type’ on the registration contact dataset if you are trying to narrow it down to individual landlords rather than corporate owners. Please note that most properties are owned by LLCs and it is difficult to track which properties one landlord is associated with since each property is registered with a unique LLC.
- Local Law 44 – Development Team dataset only includes a subset of affordable housing, but it also contains ownership data
- PLUTO, managed by the Department of City Planning, contains city-wide data and has an ‘Owner Name’ column.
- ACRIS, managed by the Department of Finance, also has a wide variety of property information
- You can connect the above datasets and information with our Affordable Housing Production by Building dataset. You can use Building ID or BBL to merge the city’s building-related datasets.

I hope this is helpful for your project. If you have any other questions, you can reach out to us at OpenData@hpd.nyc.gov directly.

Thank you,
NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development

I am a PhD student at Boston College and I am currently using the "EMS Incident Dispatch Data" dataset from the NYFD. I would like to understand what areas correspond to the variable "INCIDENT_DISPATCH_AREA". I would like you to send me a shape file (.shp) with a map of the dispatch areas. Moreover, I would like to know which ambulance companies are assigned to each dispatch area. Can you please send this information to me at meninnor@bc.edu? Thank you very much!

I am working with Professor Mariana Laverde on a research project aimed at assessing the efficiency of the ambulance system in NYC. In particular, we would like to investigate whether ambulances are assigned efficiently to patients. For this reason, we need the data requested above. 1) I would like data on the number of Tennis permits that were purchased each year, preferably from 2000 to 2022. If that range is too wide, 2012-2022 would still be helpful. If this could be broken out by borough (or even neighborhood) of permit holder that would be amazing.

2) I would also like data on the all of Tennis courts in NYC, the number of courts at each park, and the year that they opened.

I am interested in learning about the rise of Tennis' popularity in New York, as well as court availability. A great way to measure that is through memberships and available courts.

I am working on a capstone project at ***** focusing on Heat Mitigating Strategies in NYC. We hope to use these datasets in conjunction with data from Nasa's Ecostress sensor, which measures land surface temperature and emissivity. Looking at heatwaves between 2018-2023, we hope to answer if the Ecostress sensor can serve as a tool for measuring the cooling impact of cool roofs and green roofs on surrounding surface temperatures. Through this information hope to be able to asses the heat mitigating impact of Cool Roofs and Green Roofs in NYC at the neighborhood level.

I would like to know about the litter baskets on NYC streets. I would like to know which area has the most litter baskets? I also would like to know what are the rules of litter baskets in Manhattan: Should there be one on each street corner?
Response
We appreciate your interest in Open Data! Litter baskets are for pedestrians to dispose of light garbage – and can’t be used for household or commercial garbage. Bundle any loose trash that can blow away, and when discarding dog waste – wrap it first. Find a list of available litter baskets on NYC’s Open Data portal. To report an issue related to litter baskets or to make a new litter basket request, use the links on the following page on the DSNY website: https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/services/cleaning/litter-litter-baskets.

The placement of DSNY litter baskets is determined by the volume of pedestrian traffic in a given area. DSNY litter baskets are placed at corners and positioned so as not to block the crosswalk in compliance with Mayoral Executive Order No. 22 of 1995, which establishes the City's policy for sidewalk corner clearances for the purpose of maintaining safe pedestrian passage. Hope this helps!

The information you are looking for is not maintained by NYC Open Data as it is not a data request. For information requests (documents, correspondence, etc.) we encourage you to submit a FOIL request via Open Records: https://a860-openrecords.nyc.gov/

Currently, Community Boards is not using OpenRecords portal. The best option is to reach out to the specific Community Board directly. The amount and location of retails banks in NYC from 2016-2020

Are the amount of retails banks in NYC fairly distributed according to neighborhood.
Response
This request was forwarded to the Department of City Planning (DCP) open data team. We are not aware of a public dataset that is a directory of commercial/retail businesses like banks. There are third party, proprietary datasets for purchase online.

DCP does publish the PLUTO/MapPLUTO dataset which has tax lot level data, including building class based on Dept. of Finance (DOF) records. You could filter the building class field for K7-Banking Facilities with or without parking (see data dictionary - appendix c), which would be the closest field/value we would have available. Note: this is not a comprehensive list of all banking facilities in the City. Alternatively, you may want to search for employer data to locate business addresses for banks.

Hello, I am trying to identify a holistic list of privately owned properties with 1-4 units available to rent in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. I referenced the Data Set for Multiple Dwelling Registrations but it does not include the units at each property.

As part of Morgan Stanley's Giving Back initiative it runs a program every year called the Morgan Stanley Strategy Challenge where teams of Morgan Stanley employees assist nonprofit organizations to solve a critical business problem or strategic question. I am assigned to the Team Neighborhood Housing Services of Brooklyn and we are trying to grow its customer base for affordable property management. They are targeting smaller properties with 1-4 units.
Response
Thank you for your inquiry. You can find the number of units in our Buildings Subject to HPD Jurisdiction dataset, which consists of buildings that are required to register their property to HPD. The column 'LegalClassA' indicates the number of apartments in a multiple dwelling. You can find more information on the types of buildings that must register with HPD here.

For affordable housing information, please refer to Affordable Housing Production by Building dataset. You can merge this dataset with the Buildings Subject to HPD Jurisdiction dataset using BuildingID column, which is a unique identifier for our buildings.

The Department of City Planning (DCP) also has other resources that might be useful for your project. For example, PLUTO is an extensive land use and geographic data at the tax lot level and it has granular information on building characteristics. Moreover, DCP's Housing Database contains all NYC Department of Buildings (DOB)-approved housing construction and demolition jobs filed or completed in NYC since January 1, 2010. It includes the three primary construction job types that add or remove residential units: new buildings, major alterations, and demolitions, and can be used to determine the change in legal housing units across time and space

If you have any other questions, please reach out to us at OpenData@hpd.nyc.gov.

I want to find the email address of the generalist that tried to help me and asked their supervisor about NYCAPS Central for me. I want to send gratitude. How can I find their email address?

To find the generalists, I may need to make a hypothesis that if there are no generalists titles then the way to identify the HR Professional that I was assigned to, or the HR Professional that called me, or the HR Professional that tried to help me in-person is their corresponding title code.

Another option is to just search through the secure site to search them from my desk in the employee search so I can contact them and thank them for their help, but also inform them that I was unable to reach nycaps central and still do not understand why I need to mail my information to the same building I work in.

Public Payphone location data before the LinkNYC program.

I am trying to map historic payphone locations as part of my research on the public infrastructure of New York City. Access to any archived datasets of payphone locations would help show the ways that the city has evolved since the early 2000s.

Weekly or monthly School-level Student COVID-19 Vaccine data from June 2021 to last available date. There are six files currently available in NYC Open Data containing school-level data on student COVID-19 vaccinations, but we would like to obtain these data at more regular intervals, if possible.

Hi, I'm trying to find this partiacular data set on your website - I've included the link below, specifically page 4 - which states that expenditures for the city total close to $98bn

https://www.nyc.gov/assets/omb/downloads/pdf/adopt21-expreso.pdf

I would like to analyze the underlying data that supports the $98bn that is expected to be spent. Thank you for your help in this!!
Response
Thank you for reaching out to the NYC Open Data Helpdesk and for your patience as we gathered your answer. You can find the expense budget dataset here: https://data.cityofnewyork.us/City-Government/Expense-Budget/mwzb-yiwb.

Hi!

I'm trying to find the data set that outlines the total budget for NYC for any particular fiscal year? I tried downloading a few, but when I look at totals, they seem to be a bit short of the $100bn that's always quoted in the news. I've included a link that quotes this large amount - I'm trying to disaggregate where this comes from (via your website)

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/30/nyregion/nyc-budget-covid.html#:~:text=Helped%20along%20by%20an%20enormous,downturn%20caused%20by%20the%20coronavirus.

Looking at historical trends and assess where the city is spending money.
Response
We suggest viewing the following datasets:
- OpenData’s Expense Budget dataset. This contains budget information by agency, unit of appropriation, and budget code for each financial plan. However, it only shows the next fiscal year for each plan, not the current fiscal year or the outyears. For example, for the preliminary budget from this year (released 01/12/2023) the data only provides the budget info for fiscal year 2024, even though fiscal year 2023’s budget is more relevant. For that reason, the next dataset may be more useful.
- Checkbook NYC Budget tab shows the most recent budget for the current year. It also disaggregates the amount by committed (i.e. spent) and remaining (i.e. unspent), and shows the budget amounts by agency. Note that “Adopted” amounts are from the budget adopted in June 2022, and “modified” amounts are the most recent budgets (and therefore more relevant).
Feel free to let us know whether or not this fully answers your question.

Thank you,
NYC Independent Budget Office

1. Create a new FOIL request referencing FOIL-***** and clarifying what exactly you are requesting,
