How can I download the MTA data to visualize the data and study people behavior in the city? I can't find downloadable link
Response
Hi,

Hello, because the MTA is not a city agency and their data does not fall under mandates of the open data law. However you can find all MTA related data that was voluntarily provided to Open Data here:
https://data.cityofnewyork.us/browse?Dataset-Information_Agency=Metropolitan+Transportation+Authority+%28MTA%29&anonymous=true&provenance=official&q=MTA&sortBy=relevance.

Data on MTA feeds can be found here: http://datamine.mta.info/list-of-feeds.

Hi,

I am trying to find the breakdown of funding for the Chelsea Green project. I see on the Rec and Park website that it's a $2,588,000 budget split between mayoral, city council, and private funding (https://www.nycgovparks.org/planning-and-building/capital-project-tracker/project/8467). I can't find any references to this in the NYC open data budget though. Can you point me toward the proper dataset and row to look at? Thank you.

How much of the funding for the Chelsea Green project has been provided by the mayor vs the city council, and when were those allocations made?
Response
Hi ,

Thank you for contacting NYC Parks. Detailed information about Capital Projects is not currently available on the Open Data Portal. We are working to process this data for public release in the coming months. In the meantime, you can make a FOIL request for information about the Chelsea Green project through the Open Records Portal.

This is a followup to request 2175205, which was never satisfied:

I am interested in historical dog license data for 2017 and 2018 for NYC, along with any previous historical data that is available for 2012 and earlier.

The specific dataset columns that I am interested in are these:

* Dog Name
* Gender
* Breed
* Zip Code
* License Issued Date
* License Expired Date

I have a dataset for some some historical years which I received from a previous request, and am now interested in seeing whether the trends I've found hold up across a wider span of time.

I am looking to quantify the dog population of the city over time and to see how this relates to larger social trends.
Response
DOHMH is in the process of preparing 2017 dog licensing information for the annual upload to Open Data. We expect the data to be available mid to late September. We will also aim to add historic data where possible.

The fields you requested will be part of the data release schema, as they are with the latest dog licensing dataset, including:

AnimalGender

AnimalBirthMonth

BreedName

ZipCode

Response
Hi ,

The Department of City Planning (DCP) releases MapPLUTO, which is a tax lot geodatabase that contains data from many city agencies and includes attributes for zoning districts, lot width and depth, lot area and shape area. You can query MapPLUTO for specific zoning districts and extract the lot dimension and area information.

The dataset(s) that you are looking for can be found here:

A list of NYC buildings with "vaults" and the size of the vaults: From 1962 - 1997 the city imposed a tax on building vaults (usually old coal vaults that sit under many sidewalks). The tax was levied on the building owner and was based on the square footage of the vault. A 1989 article from the New York Times suggests over 14,000 buildings in NYC had vaults. I'm sure many since have been filled in. I am looking for the most recent data on the location of these vaults and their square footage (and/or total tax levy). Link to Times article -> https://www.nytimes.com/1989/07/23/realestate/postings-option-for-amnesty-vault-taxes.html

Response
Hi ,

Thank you for your request on the vaults data. The requested dataset is not “public data” as it is not regularly maintained on a computer system by DOT and contains image files. Additionally, the release of vault locations poses public safety and security concerns.

Please look at https://www.nycenet.edu/offices/finance_schools/budget/DSBPO/allocationmemo/fy18_19/am_fy19_pg1.htm

This is the "SAMs by Numbers School Allocation Memorandums sorted numerically."

Each one of these memorandums has many PDF files and many spreadsheet links. ALL THAT DETAIL should be organized in the open data website in a standard format and it should be updated daily.

It would be also helpful to have all the pending budget items that the Panel for Educational Policy is voting on in that open data set and it could be marked as "pending a vote" Please give me an email address or phone number and I can call you to give the details. Thanks!

The details of the NYC Department of Education budget.

Thank you for your response, but this request is for the School Allocation Memorandum details in the open data website.

We'd like all the school allocation memorandums in a standard format that is updated daily using an automated process. Thanks.

How many buildings filed compliance with LL 26/04 and how many buildings requested extensions?

As a fire protection engineer, i am interested in quantifying the life safety improvements made in NYC as required by Local Law 26/04. Specifically, i am interested in how many buildings have upgraded and filed for compliance with LL 26/04. I am also interested in the number of extension requests made. This will inform our research on retroactive building upgrades, and quantifying their benefit to society. The law has resulted in a massive cost and effort, on an unprecedented scale.

Thank you for your consideration.
Response
Hi,

I am not a lawyer and Local Law 26 of 2004 looks very complicated with lots of detail. https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/buildings/local_laws/locallaw26of04.pdf

I believe you can get some of this information from our open data. See DOB Job Application Filings (https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Housing-Development/DOB-Job-Application-Filings/ic3t-wcy2) and DOB NOW: Build – Approved Permits (https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Housing-Development/DOB-NOW-Build-Approved-Permits/rbx6-tga4) for a start. In these 2 datasets you'll find work being done for some of the work types mentioned in the Local Law, such as Sprinkler work.

Some of the more detailed requirements of the law won't be satisfied with DOB data, whether it's through open data or not. An example would be exit path markings in high rise buildings. This is not something that we track in our data.

I suggest you start by exploring what we do have on the portal. You could also try submitting a FOIL request for items that you can't find here: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/buildings/about/foil-requests.page. I suspect that you will not be able to get information on every detail of this law, but our lawyers would be better able to help you sort that out.

Thank you

Hi,

I see your data portal includes a Mental Health Service Finder data set - https://data.cityofnewyork.us/d/8nqg-ia7v?category=Health&view_name=Mental-Health-Service-Finder-Data.

The data underlying this program finder on the NYCWell site is richer and more comprehensive - https://nycwell.cityofnewyork.us/en/find-services/

It was developed under contract w/ DOHMH, so I believe it is subject to NYC's open data laws https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doitt/initiatives/open-data-law.page. The NYCWell directory is currently published publicly, but the license is ambiguous and it is not available in a machine readable format.

It would be great to connect w/ the Office of the Mayor (OTM) and see if they can improve this data set with Vibrant/NYCWell's data.

Let me know if you think you can connect us.

thanks!

Hello ,

The privacy of mental health records are protected by a variety of federal and New York State laws. The division is in the process of reviewing and identifying the data that can be safely de-identified for public use and will work with City officials to post it appropriately on Open Data in 2020.

New York Immigrant Affairs is using 311 to connect immigrant New Yorkers with legal aid. Whether New Yorkers have questions about TPS or DACA they can call 311 and say “ActionNYC” to ask questions or schedule an appointment for "free and safe immigration legal help."

I would like access to this data set regarding the calls including:

I would like to see how many calls have been made to 311 to connect with ActionNYC, from where, and when.
Response
Hi ,

Thanks you for your request. At this time, The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) has determined this data will not be published on the open data portal, because publishing this data would constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy. Further, MOIA receives inquiries about the Action NYC program via 311 and a direct-dial hotline, which means the 311 half of this data is not a "comprehensive collection" of the Action NYC call data.

Thank you,

Hello - I am hoping this contact request reaches you and that it garners a response. I have input my request multiple times using this platform and have yet to hear back. I am looking to obtain traffic crash datasets from 2009-2012, similar to the datasets currently availble on the portal that detail all crashes from 2013-present. Awhile back, I downloaded the previous dataset that was available on the open data portal that contained injury and fatality crash data beginning with the year 2009. However, these datasets do not accurately reflect the crash levels currently indicated by the vision zero view website. I am looking to do a school project that evaluates the changes in traffic crash trends over time, but the data I have for prior years is incorrect and far lower than the numbers reflected on your website. if I am to proceed with the data I have for the years 2009-2012 it will grossly overestimate, and upwardly bias, the changes in traffic crashes overtime.

I want to examine traffic crash trends from 2009-2018 but the data I have for 2009-2012 (which i previously downloaded from this website before it was removed) appears to be incorrect based on the total crash numbers currently posted on the vision zero view webpage. Please provide a response at your earliest convenience.

Hi,

The information you are looking for is not maintained by NYC Open Data as it is not a data request. For information requests (documents, correspondence, etc.) we encourage you to submit a FOIL request via Open Records: https://a860-openrecords.nyc.gov/

FOIL stands for the Freedom of Information Law. The New York State Freedom of Information Law requires government agencies to provide records to the public upon request. Government records affect the lives of each New Yorker, and providing easy access to the records makes government work better. The FOIL definition of records is very broad and includes information found in paper and electronic documents and audio and visual recordings. All records are available upon request, unless an exception in FOIL permits an agency to deny access to a record. Learn more about FOIL requests via this Frequently Asked Questions page.

Hi ,

Elevator inspection results related to public complaints that an elevator is not working properly or might be dangerous can be found in our DOB Complaints Received dataset.

Periodic compliance inspections were recently moved from our legacy database to our new DOB NOW system. Hi,

At this time, we believe that your requested dataset is not maintained by a New York City agency. This data is not maintained by the Department of Transportation but rather the the MTA . Because the MTA is not a city agency, their data does not fall under mandates of the open data law.

However you can find all MTA related data that was voluntarily provided to Open Data here:

Data on MTA feeds can be found here: http://datamine.mta.info/list-of-feeds.

Some organizations that operate in the City of New York may not fall under the purview of the NYC open data law. You can find further detail on the law here:

Access to Health care and social services by Sex Workers

My name is *** and I am a graduate student at ***. With a small group of my colleagues, we are building our quantitative skills in our Advanced Research and Statistics class, with ***, and are looking for secondary data to inform a semester-long research project. Our project is intended for class purposes only, not for publication. We would like to investigate access to health care services, especially STI and/or HIV prevention and treatment, for sex workers, but the scope of our project will be defined in detail once we obtain a data set.

While reviewing literature for our research proposal, we came across an article citing data from the Bureau of Correctional Health Services, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, published in 2013, entitled "Female sex workers incarcerated in New York City jails: prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and associated risk behaviors" (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23687128). This article was helpful in conceptualizing our research question. We are still looking for a data set that is U.S. focused and were wondering if DOC Health Services or other NYC gov open data might be available and able to help.

We appreciate any information you might be able to provide and hope to hear from you soon.

All non-identifiable data related to:
-NYC Well (e.g., count of calls w/ relevant corresponding data such as date, time, length, etc.; basic demographics of callers such as gender, age, race/ethnicity, language; primary reason(s) for call; location such as zip code and/or community district)
-NYC Safe
-Assisted Outpatient Treatment

$850 million was allocated to ThriveNYC. New Yorkers have a right to access some baseline data on programs Thrive is funding or supporting.

With respect to Assisted Outpatient Treatment and NYC Safe: while I understand that some of the data is rightfully confidential, there must be some data that can be shared in order to assess program volume (# of people who are benefiting - or not - from those programs) and changes to them over time. Any program that monitors individuals and enforces treatment should be able to provide some data to the public to analyze as an accountability measure.
Response
Hello,

The privacy of mental health records are protected by a variety of federal and New York State laws. The division is in the process of reviewing and identifying the data that can be safely de-identified for public use and will work with City officials to post it appropriately on Open Data in 2020.

NYCityMap Off-Street Parking

This dataset is viewable on the NYCityMap. The site says all data on the map is downloadable on NYC Open Data but this dataset is not available.
Response
Hello, The NYCityMap point layer “Off-Street Parking” comes from the Department of Consumer Affairs. The source of what appears on CityMap is this non-spatial dataset:

https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Business/Legally-Operating-Businesses/w7w3-xahh
To find the data you are looking for, you can filter on “Garage,” “Garage/Lot,” and “Lot,”.

Hope this helps,

How would I go about making a FOIL request for restaurant inspection videos. I’m doing some research on how these inspections encourage proper health and hygiene. My understanding is that all inspections are videoed so it would be helpful to actually see the process from start to finish.

I would like to know how many noise complaints were called in on my business and when they were called in

I believe we haven't had any in a long time and I want to show we have been good neighbors to the community
Response
Hi ,

The NYC Open Data team is committed to making City data available for anyone to access online. We cannot accommodate requests to perform individual lookups or queries for single data points or records available in a Open Data dataset. For more help with filtering or searching within a single dataset for an individual record, consult these
video guides.

You can also se examples of projects that use NYC Open Data on the NYC Open Data Project Gallery - some of those projects may be able to help you find what you’re looking for.

For noise complaints you can use the 311 Service Request Data set and look for complaints in your area of business: , though there is no way to specifically know which complaints can be attributed to your place of business.

How many hotel permits were granted each year from 2000 to now. How many new hotel rooms were permitted to be built each year. How many square feet of hotel rooms were permitted to be built each year from 2000 to now. How many new hotels were permitted to be built each year from 2000 to now. Thank you very much!
Response
Department of Buildings does not track construction specifically for hotels. You can find an approximation of what you're looking for in our data as follows:

A construction job can have many different permits for everything from plumbing to a sidewalk shed. For your analysis, I suggest you look at the overall job application rather than individual permits so that you are not inflating your count. Use our DOB Job Application Filings dataset, which goes back to 1/1/2000. If you are looking for brand new buildings, you will want to filter Job Type for NB.

In the Existing Occupancy and Proposed Occupancy columns, you'll see the occupancy classification. (Note: These fields are not required for every job.) You're looking for jobs that say "Res". This will indicate hotels and apartments, but it's a broad category that can mean other things too. (See page 19 of our PW1 User Guide for more detail.)

We do not track hotel rooms, but we do track "dwelling units". You can find the numbers in the Existing Dwelling Units and Proposed Dwelling Units columns. (Note: These fields are not required for every job.)

For square footage, your best bet is TOTAL_CONSTRUCTION_FLOOR_AREA. This does not differentiate between rooms and common areas, and like the other fields mentioned, this is not required for every job.

Please check our Data Dictionary for additional information. (On the dataset information page, there's a link to it under Attachments.)

please I would like to request for some data regarding the Newtown Creek Wastewater treatment plant.
Information like what is the annual gas yield from the treatment plant, data about the slurry (organic waste) and data about the sludge from the treatment plant.

I am an environmental science student at ***, Freiburg and I am currently doing a module on bio-energy and as one of my group tasks I am to write a review on any plant and i chose the Newtown creek in the course of my report i am to either write as a public agent or a private agent that wants to advise people to partner with the plant to make profit and how long it will take for them to get the profit
Response
Hi ,

At this time, we believe that your requested dataset is not one regularly maintained by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). NYCDEP is currently engaged in a study with multiple partners at the Newtown Creek WRRF. The data from this study is not yet available for release to the public.

Historical data on multiple dwelling registrations, ideally starting from 2005.

The effects of home ownership on children's outcomes. I would use this data to help better identify renter versus owner occupied buildings.
Response
Hi ,

Unfortunately, I do not think you can reliably identify homeowners vs renters using the Multiple Dwelling Registration data. It is not uncommon, for example, for a landlord owning a 4 unit (or larger) building to personally reside in that building while the other units are rental. That same landlord may register the building as owned by "Jane Smith" or owned by "123 Park St LLC" -- the registration information doesn't reveal homeowner/rental status. As you probably know, coop and condo buildings make up a large part of NYC's housing stock. It's very common for condo and coop buildings to contain renters in addition to homeowners.

All of that said, the best proxy for this information that I’m aware of is through the NYC Dept. of Finance data.

Citywide building data can be downloaded here:
https://www1.nyc.gov/site/finance/taxes/property-assessments.page

Building classification codes provide approximate data for rental vs. owned. There is no official guide on this, but what I can tell you is that, broadly speaking, building classes that start with “A” or “B” are small 1 or 2 family dwellings which may be owner occupied and/or rented. Building classes that start with “C” or “D” are rentals or co-ops, depending upon if the specific description for each contains the word co-op/cooperative. And classes that start with “R” are condo.
https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/finance/jump/hlpbldgcode.html

But again, buildings that with a co-op or condo building class may contain individual units that are being rented out at any given point in time - it's very common in my experience.

I hope this is helpful.

I am currently viewing the NYPD motor vehicle collision traffic crash data and I have a few questions. The open data includes all crashes from 7/1/2012 to present day. I am inquiring to see if the data from 01/01/2009 - to present is also accessible? I had previously saved versions of the crash data in prior years, so I have archived shapefiles with 2009 injury and fatality crash data. However, I noticed that there is a big difference in the numbers. For example, records for 2012 indicate that only 14,880 injuries occurred. In 2013, that number swells to over 40,000. Could this be a data entry error or a record keeping change? Please let me know if I can access archived excel/shapfiles of all inuries and fatalities in NYC from 2009 - present. Thank you!

See above comments. interested in accessing archived crash data to further examine potential for record keeping change or data error leading to the almost 3x higher rate of crashes in 2013.
