Private parking lots in NYC How many stores/strip malls/ leisure centers provide free parking to customers.
Response
The Department of City Planning does not maintain a dataset for free parking provided by commercial establishments.

You could download the Parking Lot data provided by DOITT as part of the NYCMAP/Planimetrics dataset, which is derived from orthophotography.
You should also use the Facilities Database (most up to date version located here: http://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/dwn-selfac.page) and filter it for Transportation facilities, sub-category Parking Lots and Garages (these are lots and garages that are permitted by DOT or DCA and are not free commercial parking).

You can also use this link to acquire the facilities data and can filter in the app:
https://capitalplanning.nyc.gov/map/facilities#10/40.7128/-74.0807 (you may need to create an account)

The only other resources you could use are DOT's Municipal Parking Facilities datasets (search on Open Data or here:

A report containing the details about the number of hate-crimes complaints, segregated by bias motivation, registered each year by New York City Police Department (NYPD) at *precinct* level for years starting from 2010 to 2016 (both years inclusive). The data we are requesting is similar to the data shared for 2017 on this link: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/stats/reports-analysis/hate-crimes.page

We will use the hate-crime dataset to compare it to the prevalence of racism and homophobia measured using social media data for New York City. We plan to study how different demographic characteristics affect the prevalence/co-prevalence of racism/homophobia and hate-crimes in NYC.

I'm looking to get access to a data set with crime locations around New York city for my architectural thesis. If at all possible, I would love to get the data about what sort of crimes, or at least what levels or degrees of crimes were committed.

This information would allow for my architectural thesis thesis at Cornell to be developed. A map with certain heat points where crime is present would be made, and critical locations would be looked into. These sites would then be investigated and solutions would be proposed.

Hello, I was wondering I can speak to someone as I need multiple datasets. I am a student at NYU M.S. in Business Analytics program and our capstone project is to predict accurate property prices of NYC properties taking into account transitional data and non traditional data.
We would like to get the following data to start
- Property assessment for properties from all 5 boroughs for the last 10 years
- Sales history of all properties from all 5 boroughs for the last 10 years
- New Developments for properties for all 5 boroughs for the last 10 years
- Restaurant location for all 5 boroughs including new restaurant opened in the last 10 years
- Subway location map
- Crime data for all 5 boroughs for the last 10 years
- Food permits
- Demographic Statistics By Zip Code for the last 10 years
- DOB Violations of properties in all 5 boroughs in the last 5 years
- DOB NOW: Build – Approved Permits
- Property Data (Buildings Information System)
I would love to speak to someone over the phone to better explain our goal for our project and also discuss data needs.
Thanks

I’d like a separate date set of ALL certificate of corrections submitted to the NYC DOB along with date of compliance, current status, description (as show on the COC), type of supportin documents, who submitted the COC, and their role (respondent, Owners, other, etc)

I want to see the date a “certificate of correction” was accepted analyze, the length of time it takes for a violation to be “closed”; the number of times a “certificate of correction” is submitted for violation compliance.
Response
Hi,

You can use our DOB ECB Violations dataset. You'll want to look at "ECB_VIOLATION_STATUS" for whether the violation is ACTIVE, still needs to be addressed, or RESOLVE, which means the issue was either fixed with DOB or dismissed by OATH. And you can look at "CERTIFICATION_STATUS" to find CERTIFICATE ACCEPTED.

NYC Zoning Tax Lot Database Historical from about 2000-present Hi, I am a PhD student at UNC working in conjunction with NYU CUSP. My dissertation is looking at the impact of zoning on property values. I was wondering if you had historical data dating back to 2000 on the NYC ZOning Tax Lot Database, or any scripts to share showing how you compiled the data. My end goal is to get a quarterly dataset of every tax lot in NYC showing changes in zoning, as well the the ULURP milestones to capture expectations of expected zoning changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Response
Hello,

We have the NYC Zoning Tax Lot Database available for several months between 2013 - Present. http://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/bytes-archive.page?sorts%5Byear%5D=0
search NYC Zoning Tax Lot Database
Unfortunately we do not have that data beyond 2013.

We do make MapPLUTO (tax lots) available for most years going back to 2002, This dataset contains zoning values for each tax lot. You can access that here: http://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/bytes-archive.page?sorts%5Byear%5D=0
search MapPLUTO
Another dataset we offer is the NYC Zoning Map Amendments (NYZMA). This is a record of every zoning change adopted going back to 1961. This contains the ULURP Number and Effective date (date Adopted by City Council). You can access that here:http://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/dwn-gis-zoning.page
Download the ESRI shapefiles or ESRI File Geodatabase version and use the NYZMA layer
The last dataset that might be of interest is the archived version of our NYC Zoning Districts that goes back to 2009 (several months available for each year). You can access that here: http://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/bytes-archive.page?sorts%5Byear%5D=0

This request is for ALL properties in NYC and it would be helpful if it went back to 1980 or as far back as you can go. Thanks.

A shapefile of the Designated Areas Within Manufacturing Districts mapped in Appendix J of Zoning Text as of 12/19/17. We were notified during an earlier request for the shapefile that "the Designated Areas Within Manufacturing Districts related to Appendix J will not be released until the the Article 78 period is over (this is a period during which an appeal against the adopted text can be filed). Article 78 period will be over by April 23. We will make a decision regarding releasing data related to Appendix J at that time."

I wanted to reach back out now that the appeal period is over to request release of the shapefile to be included in the NYC ZoLa map as a layer to understand which areas of the city fall under the Appendix J for new development purposes.
Response
The determination has been made to release the Designated Areas Within Manufacturing Districts (Appendix J) data but we need some time to get the metadata and data dictionary in order before we release it. We are aiming to have this on Open Data hopefully by end of June.

You can view the data in our Zola Application and access the data in advance by clicking on the Data tab (top right corner) and clicking the Appendix J Designated M Districts link

Hi,

At this time, we believe that your requested dataset is not maintained by a New York City agency that falls under the purview of the Open Data Law.

This may be due to the fact that some organizations that operate in the City of New York may not fall under the purview of the NYC open data law. You can find further detail on the law here:

Population projections in Queens at the zip code/census tract/neighborhood level (whichever is available - anything that is more granular than the available borough-level projections) What are the commuting characteristics of Queens residents? In what parts of Queens can we expect population growth?
Response
Hi,

At this time, we believe that your nominated data set is not maintained by a New York City agency but rather the US Census Bureau.

However, you might be able to acquire the data you are looking for via The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC). NYMTC is not a NYC Agency and not subject to open data law, but it does make 2010-2050 Total Population projections available at the Transportation Analysis Zone (TAZ) level - closest equivalent geography is the census tract. The TAZ projections can be viewed through the NYMTC website: Transportation Information Gateway (TIG).

It is somewhat difficult to navigate to the download page from the main site so I please use two links, 1) tabular and 2) shapefile provided below:
Table: https://tig.nymtc.org/views/78/table
Click on "More" on top right of table
Click Export All (or Export filtered if you used filters)
Wait for excel file to download and click on file
Shapefile: https://tig.nymtc.org/views/78/map#export
Click on the download icon on the options bar on the left side of the map (4th icon from top, directly under plus 1 icon - looks like a down arrow above a box)
Then click on the 2010-2050 Total Population link (under "Click to export as Shapefile" text)

Population projections in Queens at the zip code/census tract/neighborhood level (whichever is available - anything that is more granular than the available borough-level projections)

What are the commuting characteristics of Queens residents? In what parts of Queens can we expect population growth
Response

Wait until you see "Do you want to open or save file" message on bottom of screen

I'm trying to get a sense of the number of residential solar installations on Staten Island. I was hoping to be able to pull building permits but it seems that there isn't any way of identifying them specifically. Do you have any suggestions?
Response
Hi,

We don't currently track solar installations specifically, but you can still find them in our data. In DOB Job Application Filings, you should filter the "Other Description" column for "SOLAR TAX". You should also check the "Job Description" column for mention of solar. This is not standardized, so there may be jobs missing from your results, but you should get the majority of solar job applications in the city. If you need this on the permit level, you should then check the DOB Permit Issuance dataset to see if a permit has been issued for that job.

Hi,

At this time, we believe that your requested dataset is not maintained by a New York City agency.

This may be due to the fact that some organizations that operate in the City of New York may not fall under the purview of the NYC open data law. You can find further detail on the law here:
http://www1.nyc.gov/site/doitt/initiatives/open-da...

You are welcome to submit a new dataset request with additional detail and specifically named agencies for referral.

To whom it may concern,

I hope this e-mail finds you well. I have to come up with a research supported by data. I am writing to you as I would really like to do my research paper on how the presence of places of worship influences social cohesion in New York City (in line with Putnam’s argument). However, I am having a hard time finding datasets on the topic. Do you know if one exists, and if so, where I could find it?

Thank you so much for your understanding and your help.

how does the presence of places of worship influence social cohesion in New York City?
Response
Hello,

The data you've requested can be found here:
http://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-d...

You can use either PLUTO or MapPLUTO. The differences between them are;
1) MapPLUTO is a spatial dataset while PLUTO is tabular,
2) MapPLUTO is released as 5 separate shapefiles (1 for each Borough) while PLUTO has the entire City combined

To find tax lots (or parcels) containing houses of worship, you need to filter the data using the 'Building Class' field. Any lot that starts with "M" is a house of worship. You can further filter them down by specific types of house of worship:

M. CHURCHES, SYNAGOGUES, ETC.
1. Church, Synagogue, Chapel
2. Mission House (Non-Residential)
3. Parsonage, Rectory
4. Convents
9. Miscellaneous
(note: church = M1, parsonage = M3, convent = M4, etc.)

If you have additional questions regarding PLUTO/MapPLUTO please consult the data dictionary which can will answer most of your questions:
http://www1.nyc.gov/assets/planning/download/pdf/d...

Hello New York Preservations and Landmarks Committee,

I am working on a data science research project for my degree in Architectural History that requires me to access information about New York City landmarks. I've found your site online where I can download the open data information I need: https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Housing-Development/Individual-Landmarks/ch5p-r223/data

The downloaded excel spreadsheet has all the information I need, except for the date each building was constructed. Instead, the spreadsheet lists the designation date only, the address of the buildings, its geographical coordinates, and just about everything else but year of construction.

I see however that the construction years are available from this map created by the Landmarks Preservation Committe on the ArcGIS platform: https://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=a38d198df9bc469a8b452d416dd90328 I am not an ArcGIS user, and I do not know how to extract the data from this map as an excel or CSV file of building names, dates, etc.

I was wondering if you could possibly send me this information as a spreadsheet or update the information on your open data website to include each building's year of construction. I am surprised this data is not readily accessible online considering that construction date is one of the most important features of any NYC landmark, if not the most important feature.

Sincerely

What was the date of construction of each of New York City's 34,000 landmarks? And what economic/social trends can be observed by analysing their dates of construction?
Response
Dear,

Apologies for the delay in answering your question, we had a technical glitch in receiving it. The information on the historic building database has recently been updated and can be downloaded as a csv file. The data includes the date of construction for each building (listed as “Date_Low” “Date_High” and “Date Combo”).

Go to NYC Open Data Portal, search for LPC, open "LPC Individual Landmark and Historic District Database", click the "Export" tab on the right, click "CSV" to download.

Information from this table can be joined to the "Individual Landmarks" point file by the common field "BIN" (Building Identification Number).

Thank you for your inquiry. The Department is in the process of making more restaurant data available online as suggested. Given the large size of the data-sets as well as the dynamic nature of it, the process is complex and will take time to complete. Zoning lists with addresses not just block and lots. and size of lots

want to do a mass search of addresses
Response
Hi,

Currently there is not a dataset that lists every single address and with the zoning. However, there are several applications you can use to determine the zoning for every known address:

1) ZOLA: You can search for zoning by address using NYC Department of City Planning's Zola application:
https://zola.planning.nyc.gov/about#9.72/40.7125/-...

2) PLUTO: NYC Department of City Planning also releases PLUTO & MapPLUTO datasets. This dataset has the zoning, commercial overlay and special district for each lot in the city. For most lots, a single address is also listed so you could try searching or filtering for that address within PLUTO to see the zoning.
Download PLUTO: http://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-d...

3) GOAT/GBAT: If you know an address but do not know the lot (or vice versa), you can use the GOAT application for single queries or GBAT for batch queries.
GOAT: http://a030-goat.nyc.gov/goat/Default.aspx
use the Address tab if you know an address and want Borough/Block/Lot (BBL) number
use the Block & Lot tab if you know the Borough/Block/Lot (BBL) number and want an address

I see that the NYPD has information about citywide crime and borough by borough but this information is all cumulative for each year. Is there any way to get this information more granular by having reported crimes by date?

I am a current student at Princeton University from New York and I am studying the relationship between parking tickets and crime in NYC. The data on Open Data is good so far but a more granular dataset by date of incident would be very helpful. Another question I have is if the Open Data site has some tool to transfer longitude and latitude to precinct number. I would also like to study motor vehicle accidents and add that to the dataset but it seems as though that information is only provided in longitude and latitude so a way to map long, lat to precinct would be very helpful. Thank you so much for the help in advance!

Hello,

The data you've requested can be found here:
https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/NYPD-Complaint-Data-Current-YTD/5uac-w243.

This is the Historical dataset going back to 2006 https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/NYPD-Complaint-Data-Historic/qgea-i56i. In these datasets there is a date column for when a crime was reported to NYPD. Please review the dataset foot notes and data dictionaries for further insight to the data and it's limitations.

Water flow/volume in water mains and sanitary, storm, and combined sewers, by time of day and location (e.g., automatic meter reading, manhole, outfall, or treatment plant). The data provided by these manhole monitoring sensors and similar sensors would be especially helpful:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/press_releases/12-63pr.shtml
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/press_releases/13-087pr.shtml

What is the time-of-day usage of water and how does that differ by neighborhood? What is the reduction in combined sewer flow (and thus the potential for combined sewer overflow) during periods of precipitation from areas with permeable pavement and other green infrastructure? What data is missing because of the lack of flow sensors or other records?
Response
The requested information is not regularly maintained by the Department. These were pilot/limited programs.

Dataset of tax lots that are part of a Zoning Lot Development Agreement (ZLDA). The dataset should label lots with updated BBL numbers, differentiate receiving sites from transferring sites, provide document ID of the ZLDA, and disclose amount of development rights transferred. Quantify and locate development rights as to inform land use decision making.
Response
Hi,

This data is housed in property records at DOF. ZLDAs can be found on individual properties by using ACRIS, which is a DOF system. Creating the requested database would be a large and resource-intensive project. DCP has neither the resources nor the responsibility to create such a real property database

Response
The determination has been made to release the Designated Areas Within Manufacturing Districts (Appendix J) data but we need some time to get the metadata and data dictionary in order before we release it. We are aiming to have this on Open Data hopefully by end of June.

You can view the data in our Zola Application (https://zola.planning.nyc.gov/) and access the data in advance by clicking on the Data tab (top right corner) and clicking the Appendix J Designated M Districts link

I would like the crime type and location (address and/or longitude and latitude) of major crimes in the Bronx borough from as far back as 2010 to present, especially the span from 2014-present. Other necessary data includes responding precinct, whether the crime was indoors/outdoors, and date of the crime.

I am currently conducting an ecological analysis of the association between major crimes and community garden space in the Bronx, by neighborhood. Ultimately, this study aims to find out if the inclusion of community gardens reduces the crime rate nearby (whether it be because of increased community presence on the streets, a communal respect for the neighborhood, some reason related to the aesthetic beauty of a garden, or some other reason).

I need the following data set for two groups of NYCHA residents we work with in Brooklyn - those in Red Hook and those in Gowanus:

I'm updating our 2013 statistics for a grant renewal for our adult education program which works with NYCHA residents in these neighborhoods. Renewed funding will support our continuing work with NYCHA residents in Gowanus and Red Hook.

Hi,

At this time, we believe that your requested dataset is not maintained by a New York City agency that falls under the purview of the Open Data Law.

This may be due to the fact that some organizations that operate in the City of New York may not fall under the purview of the NYC open data law. You can find further detail on the law here:

I am interested in obtaining data on arrests made by NYPD police officers.

I am interested in obtaining the follow information for all arrests made by NYPD in 2010 and 2011.

Variables needed:
date of arrest
time of arrest (or booking)
DOB of arrestee (I realize that exact DOB would be PII but I was hoping for month and year or at worst age age or just year of birth)
gender of arrestee
race of arrestee
reason for arrest*
number of prior arrests*
borough where crime was allegedly committed

These requests are not made for commercial reasons and I am not a member of the media (rather an academic researcher).

I am interested in investigating how arrest patterns change through out the day/ over a month.

I am currently looking for access to the 2010 NYC LiDAR dataset, in particular I am interested in .LAS files of tree canopies. If there is a more recent LiDAR dataset of tree canopies that would be great too.

We are currently working with New School University as part of an NSF funded Sustainability Research Network Project Called Urban Resilience to Extremes (UREx). We are interested in questions surrounding the effectiveness of green infrastructure projects in NYC. In particular, the project is interested in using the tree canopy LiDAR as part of this modeling.

Hi ,
Thank you for your request. Unfortunately, NYC Parks only maintains the landcover data sets already on the Open Data Portal; we do not have landcover raster data sets or analysis from the year 2000.
