Request
Tree database for Central Park, Prospect Park, Riverside Park, and all other large parks within the five boroughs.
Trying to understand the density, species, size, and distribution of all trees in New York, not just the street trees (from the relevant dataset) or even just the street and small park trees (as per the Forestry dataset).
Response
Good afternoon,
Thank you for your message. Unfortunately, NYC Parks does not currently have comprehensive tree inventories for our large parks. After the completion of the 2015 street tree census, NYC Parks staff and volunteers continued the census efforts in landscaped parks and playgrounds under 6 acres. So far, we have mapped and collected data on over 70,000 trees in all five boroughs. As this effort continues and other inventories become available, the data will be considered for release on the Open Data Portal.
In the meantime, you may be interested in the 2010 Landcover Rasters and the Urban Tree Canopy Assessment Metrics datasets currently on the portal (links below). Though these datasets are not as detailed as a full inventory, they may provide useful information about canopy and other landcover types in our large parks.
Best,
NYC Parks and the Open Data Team
