Request
Thank you for reviewing our request. We are looking for textual description of traffic intersections in New York city.
We hope the description is rich and it can touch upon as many perspectives as possible. For instance, such a description can cover nearby facilities (e.g. hospitals, schools, etc.), landmarks (e.g., historic buildings, parks, etc.) important traffic hubs (e.g. bridges, subway stations, etc.), landscapes (e.g., up/down hill, narrow road, etc.) and many more.
It's also OK for the data to be outdated, like the ones old traffic report, city planner report, etc.
Overall, we hope the volume of the data to be large and the context to be rich. The reason for the request is explained in the next question.
Thank you.
We are a research team from Cornell University, Computer Science Department. We are creating a multi-modal machine learning model for a smart city traffic system.
The idea is that we can train computer-visioned-based machine learning models to control the traffic light for a small set of traffic intersections. Then we can recommend the model to control traffic in a similar intersection. However, determining 2 traffic intersections are so similar that they can share the same traffic control model is a non-trivial task. We plan to train a multi-modal model to solve the model recommendation problem.
We have already collected intersection image data from wikimedia commons. Per our knowledge, NYC opendata has tabular data for intersections to summarize the traffic condition. (If there are more similar data sources, please share your insight with us.) We still hope to have the textual data to describe the intersections so that we can make a more educated recommendation.
Suggestions, like where to look for such datasets, are also greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Response
Your requested dataset is not maintained by New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), all intersections are tracked by the street names, descriptions such as landmarks, subway stations, landscapes are not used as they can change over time and these facilities are not maintained by NYC DOT.
You may find all New York City intersections tracked by street names in the LION dataset: https://data.cityofnewyork.us/City-Government/LION/2v4z-66xt/about_data
Thank you,
