Overview
We offer an arts-enriched school environment. We want our students to see themselves as mathematicians, so we foster deep comprehension of math concepts by helping our students acquire habits of mind: persisting, questioning, communicating with precision and clarity, thinking flexibly, listening with understanding/empathy, and thinking interdependently. BSI students read diverse content and their writing includes feature articles, informational texts, comic books, interviews, persuasive essays, literary analysis, and literary criticism. We teach our students to engage technology, to think critically about what they see, and to be thoughtful about how they use technology to express their thoughts and ideas. Parents play a crucial role in both the daily life and long-term growth of BSI. Through a vital home/school connection, we build a learning community based on respect and cooperation.

Our academics integrate music, graphic arts, and international studies through core courses in math, science, social studies, and ELA. The Common Core Learning Standards come to life as students participate in debates, conduct laboratory experiments, and publish articles for our school newspaper. Technology is infused in all classrooms through the use of interactive SMART Boards, laptops, iPads, Chromebooks, and computer-based programs. Communication with our parents is successfully done through our online grading system, PupilPath. Our Lion's Den Service Learning program develops projects that help support the school, local, and world community. Overview
I.S. 228 offers a creative environment that brings out students' talents in safe, encouraging, and challenging ways. We have zero tolerance for bullying and have partnered up with Bridg-it. We also have a Student Teacher Outreach Mentorship Program, where our teachers give up their time to have lunch with small groups of students. Our paramount goal is to empower all students with the necessary skills to become college- and career-ready. All members of our school community will be responsible for creating a nurturing environment that supports rigorous learning delivered through a high-quality curriculum aligned to the Common Core. We strive to implement engaging and rigorous lessons that meet the needs of all students. Parents are respected partners and are supported by the district's first Parent Engagement Center. Parents are in constant communication through innovative apps such as Pupil Path and Remind. I.S. 228 offers free night classes that teach English as a New Language to the parents of new immigrant students and other interested adults. We run two full after-school programs from 2:30pm-5:30pm, five days a week with a variety of academic and recreational activities.

Overview
P.S./M.S. 42 achieves academic excellence for all students by supporting their strengths and needs. Our goal is to meet the Common Core Learning Standards while creating a learning environment that will boost all students to grade level and above. We build morale by instilling in our students, staff, and parents a sense of self-respect along with an appreciation for the diversity of the multicultural society in which we live, work, and learn. As a school community, we believe that students learn best through instruction that is tailored to their specific learning styles and needs. We have invested in technology to advance the skills of our students and make them competitive in today's world. All of our classrooms are equipped with SMART Boards, and over 250 laptops and 140 iPad minis are available for students within classrooms. We provide parents with up-to-date information so that they can partner with the school to ensure that every child is college- and career-ready.

Overview
Our school's vision is one in which the staff members, students, and parents work collaboratively in a safe and supportive environment. Learning is defined as an ongoing process that is incorporated into all aspects of the curriculum, as well as enrichment programs that link the arts and literacy. We strongly encourage our students to take risks within the safety of the classroom in order to facilitate independence and higher-order thinking skills. Our students will evolve into responsible, accountable, and self-assured adults who will establish themselves as part of the community network. Having only one class per grade level allows students to receive a lot of individual attention from our strong staff. Our middle school curriculum consists of the core subjects of humanities (ELA and social studies), math, and science. We are a Respect for All award school.

Overview
M.S. 53 is a community school that is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education to our students. From our community BBQs to our neighborhood food and clothing drives and celebrations that include our students showcasing the arts and their academics, we strive to give back to our community. Parents appreciate our open-door policy and our welcoming environment, which includes a family room in our Parent Coordinator's office. Our M.S. 53 staff works collaboratively with our active Parents Association (PA) to plan and implement various family engagement activities throughout the school year. Our parents are also active members in the School Leadership Team (SLT) meetings. Students enjoy the numerous in-school and after-school programs available through our partnership with Sports and Arts in School Foundation (SASF), designed to enrich their learning experience. We are also a Broadway Junior school—our students participate in their own rendition of a Broadway Play, and get to see the same play on Broadway. Students also benefit from our annual All Boys Forum and All Girls Forum where we host guest speakers and engage in meaningful activities tailored to the unique needs of our students at the middle school level.

Overview
J.H.S. 226 focuses on exploratory learning. The school is organized into four learning communities. The Discovery and Explorations Academy is a hub for sixth graders, which allows students opportunities to explore the Junior High School experience through academic rigor, discipline, creativity, and culture. The Humanities Academy for Performing Arts showcases the talent in our youngsters with quarterly displays in music, art, dance, poetry, and drama. Visionaries Academy for Science and Technology engages students in developing projects in web design, air and space exploration, PowerPoint, and DNA splicing. The Renaissance Academy for Broadcast Journalism engages students in print and digital media. Students utilize elements of print and digital media to develop quarterly displays in a student newspaper, video broadcast, and a student comic magazine, while continuing to engage in academic rigor around the Common Core Learning Standards.

Channel View School for Research
Overview
Channel View School for Research (CVSR) is an Expeditionary Learning School that believes students learn best through a project-based approach. Students focus on character and career development by participating in small advisory groups called Crew. Our students are researchers, historians, urban planners, and scientists that investigate real world problems and develop creative, actionable solutions using cutting-edge technology. Our Oceanography/Robotics program uses drone technology that allows students to actively explore the aquatic ecology beneath Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Our program is highly engaging and pushes students to do their best while developing a culture of collaboration and teamwork.

Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy VI
Overview
Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy VI (KAPPA VI) is located in the beautiful Far Rockaway campus. The school is modeled after the Air Force philosophy of leadership training. Students, who are called cadets, wear a formal uniform and each class, called a squadron, is named after a NASA space mission. Our school's aim is to be an "Ivy League Middle School Academy," with a long-term goal of preparing students for college. The debate team competes in the citywide competition. Math is a point of pride at KAPPA VI, and the school's math team competes in citywide math competitions. Our students are encouraged to take the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). KAPPA VI also offers a wide range of enrichment courses, including art and music. We have a state-of-the-art media room with iMac computers, and a state-of-the-art library is being built.

Overview
Hawtree Creek Middle School (HCMS)—M.S. 297 is a new small school located in South Ozone Park. Instruction is differentiated and provides students with consistent opportunities to collaborate in small groups and engage in academic discussion. Academics and behavior are framed around the school's character values: leadership, collaboration, perseverance, and community, creating a positive school culture. Parent involvement is very strong, and parents take great pride in their child's education at HCMS. One significant aspect of the school is student-led conferences, which take place twice a year. During a student-led conference, students present a portfolio of their work from each content area and explain their process of learning to their parents/families. The academic program at HCMS is supported by a variety of electives offered during the day, an extended-day program on Wednesday and Thursday, and an after-school program for HCMS students every day until 5pm.

Overview
The P.S. 34 Franklin Delano Roosevelt Middle School experience provides students the opportunities to develop as independent, critical thinkers immersed in rigorous instruction to promote college- and career-readiness skills. As we focus on teaching the whole child in a safe, nurturing environment we encourage positive social emotional growth and provide community service opportunities to enhance our students' academic growth. Our school setting enables us to address students individual academic, social, and behavioral needs. We take students on field trips to universities, such as Harvard and Yale. As an adopted school by the District Attorney's office, our students take trips to the courthouse and law firms. Some special programs we offer include: mock trial, peer mediation, student council, Book Club, basketball, volleyball, and flag football. We recognize student achievement monthly during assemblies for perfect attendance, Scholar of the Month, and Honor Roll. Honor students are rewarded with trips to go bowling and ice skating. Parents appreciate our supportive learning environment where teachers know the students well and expect the best from each student.

The Nathan Straus Preparatory School (P.S. 140)
Overview
We are a community of learners focused on success. We encourage our students to take risks, to try their best, and to take advantage of the opportunities offered at our school. We take pride in the small school community. The students say: "The teachers are very understanding and supportive. They care about us and point us in the right direction." In order to meet the Common Core Standards, the curricula used are Scholastic Code-X for ELA and Pearson CMP3 for Math. In social studies and science courses, we focus on project-based learning. We have a technology lab, science lab, and a fully equipped gymnasium. Our students have a variety of leadership opportunities through student council, safety patrol, and book buddies with the lower grades. In addition, our students receive small group support and/or elective on alternating days. Our students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of after-school programs funded by the 21st Century and community-based organizations.

Overview
We are developing a culture of college-minded students and working with community members to create a challenging learning environment. Parents appreciate our family-like atmosphere and the bilingual, bi-cultural learning opportunity. In school year 2018-2019, dual-language program courses will extend to both sixth and seventh grade which will continue to grow one grade at a time each year. In the Dual Language Program, there will be a beginning level dual-language program for students who are less proficient in Mandarin Chinese, and an advanced level dual-language program for students who are more advanced in Mandarin Chinese. Core subjects such as math, Chinese language arts, music, and dance may be delivered in both English and Mandarin Chinese on alternate schedules. All middle school students will have opportunity to participate in an Accelerated Math Program and Accelerated Science Program which will end with Integrated Algebra I Regents Exam, Living Environment Regents Exam, and Chinese Language Proficiency Exam in eighth grade.

School For Global Leaders
Overview
The School for Global Leaders is a small middle school that opened in 2008. We are currently known for our outstanding work in Common Core Standards and service-learning. The school is partnered with Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project to provide rigorous and individualized reading and writing programs. Students have opportunities to research and become actively involved in addressing world problems that they care about. Global Leaders enthusiastically participate in Integrated Projects Week (IPW), in which students work with one another on service-learning projects. Past projects have included a live puppet show about local poverty, a food drive benefiting City Harvest, a simulated Global Leaders News broadcast, online public service announcements, and the relighting of a community apartment building with energy efficient light bulbs. At the School for Global Leaders, learning and fun go hand-in-hand.

Overview
We offer a wide variety of courses and special programs to interest every child. The school also provides an accelerated program filled with challenging courses. Parents appreciate the organized and traditional atmosphere of I.S. 318. We believe in offering the widest number of choices and programs for students at a very high level. For example, we offer an amazing music program, national championship chess team, strong robotics program, numerous championship sports teams, and a full range of arts offerings. Students may take up to four Regents courses by graduation and we currently offer nearly fifty after-school programs for our students. We believe that students should have the opportunity to engage in high level programs beyond their core classes. Whether you want to join our rock band, perform in our dance company, pitch on our championship baseball team, create works of art in our ceramics lab, cook a delicious dish in our cooking room, play your trumpet at Carnegie Hall, or checkmate the best chess players in our nation, I.S. 318 offers something to challenge every student.

Overview
We are a grade 6-12 college preparatory academy with a challenging and engaging curriculum. Our teachers know the students well and address each student's individual needs. Students love our small class size, our amazing teachers, the sense of community, and the countless special programs we offer, including our free and extensive after-school tutoring, arts, sports, leadership, travel, and academic enrichment programs. Students also rave about the unparalleled selection of books. Parents appreciate the communication and personalized attention they receive at East Side and regularly comment on its private-school feel. Each student has an advisor who provides ongoing academic, social, and emotional support, and communicates regularly with the family. Students and families greatly appreciate that college prep and awareness begins in sixth grade. All students develop graduation portfolios in the core subjects. Students present and defend their work to committees twice a year through our portfolio roundtable presentations. Students cannot graduate without completing this rigorous and engaging process of authentic assessment.
