Students like our school because of its high academic achievement record and outstanding reputation. They also benefit from our small, supportive learning environment. Parents value the opportunity to contribute to the school's decision-making process through participation in parent leadership groups. I.S. 340 maintains regular communication with parents through our parent website and telephone message system. Our technology resources include SMART Boards in our classrooms and a state-of-the-art science lab that enables our students to gain hands-on scientific experience.

Ebbets Field Middle School
Overview
Ebbets Field Middle School is an international education center, founded in 2005. Ninety percent of our students are immigrants or children of immigrants. We are proud of this heritage and diversity. Our instructional week is five hours longer than similar schools ensuring all students meet and exceed the challenges of the Common Core and city-wide instructional shifts. We are one of four Turnaround Arts schools in NYC. Turnaround is a presidential initiative for academic success through the arts. Marc Anthony is our celebrity partner and is committed to our school’s success. All of our curricula, from mathematics to social studies, are infused with the arts. To ensure that our students are college and career ready, every student is given an iPad to experience the curriculum through an interactive, hands-on, minds-on format. We have partnerships that extend learning and guarantee the educational, physical, social, and emotional development of each of our students and families.

Overview
Students enjoy being immersed in project-based learning activities that allow them to develop strong computer literacy skills. They also love our clubs and student government, which provide multiple opportunities for them to express their views and build school spirit through a variety of special events. Our school is a hub of daytime, after-school, and weekend activities that combine to create an intimate and child-centered environment that challenges students academically, while allowing them to explore their talents and interests. With fewer than 300 students enrolled each year, we are able to improve academic achievement for our students by personalizing the learning process for each child.

The School of Integrated Learning
Overview
As a college- and career-bound school, we have high expectations for all scholars, accompanied by high levels of support. As an Extended Learning Time (ELT) school, our curriculum emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in settings where scholars are challenged to use critical thinking skills, connecting their learning to the real world. In order to allow all of our eighth-grade scholars to sit the Living Environment Regent, they take the eighth-grade NYS Science Test in seventh grade. Scholars in our Integrated Learning Academy K354A are also on pace to graduate with Integrated Algebra and US History Regents. We offer art, theater, music, and dance as classroom subjects. A vast majority of our scholars get accepted to their first choice high school, with a number of them attending specialized high schools each year. All classrooms have SMART Boards, along with state-of-the-art technology and science labs, a mobile science lab, and laptop carts. Our scholars set personal goals regarding their learning, with academic intervention services offered to provide the necessary support to meet the Common Core Learning Standards. Parents are kept informed via auto-dials, email, and text updates, a monthly newsletter, and our school website.

Science, Technology and Research Early College School at Erasmus
Overview
Science, Technology, and Research (STAR) Early College School at Erasmus is a small screened sixth- through twelfth-grade Early College school. Students entering our middle school are placed into one of four houses where they will compete with their peers—academically and athletically—throughout their educational journey, and become part of all aspects of our school community. Our dynamic team of teachers and Brooklyn College professors are eager to prepare students interested in science, mathematics, and technology for college and the working world. With our partners, we offer a range of challenging academic courses that give students firsthand exposure to the demands of high school and college by using field-based and hands-on methods of instruction. Students will use the rich resources on the Brooklyn College and other City University of New York (CUNY) campuses as their learning laboratories. In addition to their high school diploma, our high school students may earn up to 61 college credits, tuition free, from Brooklyn College enabling many of them to begin college as a sophomore or junior at a CUNY, SUNY, or private university.

Overview
Our scholars are the center of our school. They are supported through a personalized education where we know all of their interests and needs. From online learning, field trips, and solving real-world problems, scholars believe that what they are learning in school is relevant to the real world. They are empowered to be leaders within the school community by taking responsibility in shaping their middle school experience. Scholars voice their interests through their programming of the arts, after-school programs, and advisory. Our parents are part of the school community through an open-door policy which welcomes them to visit our school. Through the Advisory Program, they have a primary point of contact who knows their child’s academic, social, and emotional progress. Additionally, they are kept well-informed on a weekly basis of their child’s progress. We use technology to engage scholars in a challenging curriculum where scholars solve real-world problems in science and social studies.

Overview
Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School provides a nurturing environment where students from grades six through eight are empowered to explore their passions, through facilitated learning opportunities that lead to student achievement. We acknowledge that, as individuals, we all have different needs and aspirations. We collaborate with our families to ensure that a complete education is provided in order to prepare our students for high school, college, and beyond. As a "Respect for All" school, this mission is built into the fabric of our school culture and climate. We are proud to partner with the NYCDOE Urban Advantage Science Initiative, Office of Arts and Special Projects through Arts Achieve, St. Francis College, and the Jose Limon Dance Company to provide rigorous field experiences and differentiated learning opportunities that help to intellectually challenge our students. We believe that Together Everyone Achieves More, which is what makes this school a shining jewel within the community.

Overview
We provide challenging instruction in a nurturing environment. Our teachers address the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) by infusing technology into our curriculum so that students achieve their potential and are ready to enter college. We have a state-of-the-art computer lab and each class has access to SMART Boards and iPads. Students have opportunities to showcase their literary and artistic talents. We use SchoolMessenger, email, and an online grading system to keep parents informed of their child's progress. We offer after-school programs daily through our partnership with the Samuel Field Y Beacon Program. Through our partnerships, students are provided experiences and enrichment to develop their learning. Our Technology and Fine Arts Department receives many grants. Per an average compiled by the Wall Street Journal, M.S. 158 sends more students to Specialized High Schools than any other middle school in Queens.

Overview
Irwin Altman M.S. 172 combines cutting-edge technology, a dedicated and experienced staff, and a student-oriented philosophy to achieve our goal of academic excellence for all of our students. We are acutely aware of our students' unique social and emotional needs as they transition from their elementary schools into the more challenging rigors of preparing for college and career readiness in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. We believe that students learn best by authentic and rigorous intellectual engagement aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards. Emphasis is placed on in-depth academic exploration that results in high quality discussion and writing that demonstrates deep and elaborate thinking in all content areas. Additionally, M.S. 172 was noted in the NYCDOE Annual Arts Report for our dedication to Arts Education including visual, and performance arts. At M.S. 172, we provide parents with ongoing contact and school information through our school website, MS172.org and Skedula/PupilPath, emails, and phone messages. In collaboration with our PTA, we promote parent engagement through informational, and both child and parent-centered activities that fulfill our mission of being the educational center of our community.

The Holliswood School (P.S./I.S. 178)
Overview
All children can exceed standards by being part of a nurturing environment that challenges them to reach their full potential. At P.S./I.S. 178, we promote an environment that encourages open communication, and where every community member is a participant in contributing to the school's success. We create a haven where students are empowered and recognized for their unique abilities. At our school, there is a strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration. Staff members, parents, guardians, and students find the family environment which they are a part of to be remarkable. Differentiated instruction and acceleration take place from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade classes daily. After school, there is a plethora of programs to choose from. We are proponents of enrichment and arts programs, as well as sports. We believe that every student is an expert at something and it is our shared responsibility as educators to identify what that is and to tap into that knowledge to develop other skills.

Overview
We have a diverse community and a student-centered environment promoting mutual respect for all and maximizing students' potential for high school readiness. Chosen as one of only 11 Chancellor's Learning Partners Plus Schools, we received praise for being in the top 1% of NYC middle schools for student progress in 2015 and again in 2017. We received "Well-Developed" in all 10 categories on the 2015 Quality Review. Teachers address the Common Core Learning Standards in all subject areas and produce exceptional lessons through thematic interdisciplinary learning/teaching. Ryan has three academies (Law & Justice, Media Arts, and Scientific Exploration) that offer the same rich Common Core curriculum with opportunities for additional learning based on academy theme. Each academy offers Honors/SP courses, talent courses, and classrooms infusing technology. Incoming sixth graders all take robotics and art talent courses. We are one of only two schools in NYC offering a full year of Robotics instruction for every sixth grader. We are a Software Engineering Program school offering computer programming/coding. Our school also benefits from a partnership with St. John's University. We believe in helping great children become great students.

Overview
Simon Baruch Middle School is a traditional middle school committed to developing students who think critically and who are civic minded. The school utilizes a house structure as an organizational model that allows teachers to know our students well. An assistant principal and guidance counselor are assigned to every grade level to ensure that support services are available to all students. We offer all students the chance to engage in a rigorous academic curriculum that challenges students to think critically and independently. Students engage in a balance of independent learning tasks and collaborative learning experiences. Our rigorous core content is supplemented by extensive arts and technology offerings that provide students with opportunities to develop their interests and talents. Our school supplements the regular instructional program with an extensive after-school program that provides students with academic enrichment, academic intervention, arts, and athletics.

East Side Middle School
Overview
East Side Middle is an academically successful, nurturing community. Our teachers help our students better understand the world in which they live so they can act upon that knowledge to make that world a better place. Our students learn to think as professional writers and read as literary critics and editors; they learn to study the past as historians and the natural world as scientists. Teachers and staff know students individually and address their specific needs in all grades. In their advisory classes, sixth graders are prepared for their middle school experience in such areas as time management, emotional literacy, and organizational skills. Parents appreciate our staff's in-depth knowledge of individual students, as well as the personalized attention students receive. Families appreciate the accessibility of the administration and instructional staff and the sense of community that defines the school culture. We are fortunate to have an involved and responsive parent community.

Overview
M.S. 131 is a vibrant school community where all students are valued as individuals with many talents and expertises. Students are challenged in many ways. Throughout their middle school journey, students are encouraged to develop their voices in academics and through participation in school events and activities. Students are well supported by the teachers and administration in all areas. We use research-based best practices to ensure that all students achieve their best. Parents feel welcomed by a school that responds to their concerns and needs. We also offer a unique three-year arts program where students major in one of three areas: Visual Art, Dance, and Instrumental Music. We offer Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language, and our dual language program (English/Mandarin) will expand in all three grade levels in 2017-18 school year. Students enrolling in this dual language program will develop their language proficiency in both of these languages by the end of eighth grade.

Overview
Students appreciate that they are challenged academically in an environment where teachers take the time to get to know them personally. They also like all the opportunities that are available to them in a big school setting including our extensive after-school, band, and sports programs. Parents appreciate the diverse student population and dedicated staff, and they also value the accessibility of the administrators and teachers. Students and families work closely with their grade level assistant principal and guidance counselor. In addition to a strong core curriculum, Wagner has one of the largest music programs in the city, providing approximately 500 students with instrumental courses. We are fortunate to have a very involved and active Parents' Association.

Yorkville East Middle School
Overview
M.S. 177 prepares students to be critical thinkers, effective problem solvers, and powerful communicators in a rapidly changing 21st century world. By embracing academic rigor, student voice, collaboration, self-direction, and empathy, our students will have the confidence, tenacity, and skills for success. We pride ourselves on our small, tight-knit community in which every adult knows every child. To do this, we utilize our small school size to provide students with individualized and small-group instruction. Our advisory periods allow for daily check-ins and the promotion of our core values that help our students build strong bonds and respectful relationships with their peers. To enhance students' love for learning, we offer enrichment classes and team sports in addition to courses such as STEM and Spanish. This approach allows students to continue exploring the different topics that might interest them and continuously grow throughout their middle school career.

Overview
At 217, we pride ourselves on being a "big city school with a small-town feel." Our small class sizes allow the teachers to get to know students on a deeply personal level. In addition, subject area teachers follow the same group of students through sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, which provides the students with the opportunity to interact with teachers academically and socially throughout middle school. Our families appreciate the support they receive during their child's transition from elementary school to middle school. We offer a wide array of opportunities for students to explore their non-academic interests during the school day. We also provide academic enrichment throughout the year. We have a modern building that is open, clean, and bright. Our hallways are lined with flags representing the countries of our many international students and families. Our state-of-the-art facilities offer updated computer labs, and ActiveBoards in every classroom.

The Ella Baker School
Overview
The Ella Baker School is a pre-K-8 public school located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the Julia Richman Education Complex. We are a non-catchment area school and accept students from all five boroughs. We serve a population of approximately 320 students from culturally diverse backgrounds. A critical aspect of Ella Baker’s mission is to provide continuity in each child’s school experience from kindergarten through eighth grade. It is our expectation that our students will continue with us through the eighth grade. We do not hold middle school tours, as it is rare that there are spots open in the upper grades.

Overview
The Clinton School for Writers & Artists is close-knit and collaborative community. Students who succeed thrive in a small, academically rigorous school. We are in our own new construction building off of Union Square, at 10 East 15th Street. This facility has an 8,500 square foot gym, an outdoor roof play space, a modern library, science labs, and studios for music and art. The middle school has its own separate space on the upper floors, with separate start and dismissal times, but we are one school with one administration. The upper grades program culminates in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Students who are admitted into our middle school have the option of staying with us for the full seven years. The middle school has a comprehensive, free after-school program through our partnership with Manhattan Youth.

Overview
Students appreciate our teachers' energy and enthusiasm for the subjects they teach, as well as their accessibility—teachers are always happy to provide additional support in academics or to help students work through problems. Parents appreciate the values we place on building traditional academic and critical-thinking skills. Our curriculum integrates learning about a range of issues and provides students with a structured forum for taking action to make the world a better place for all. All eighth graders take Algebra 1. Students at P.S./I.S. 276 have the opportunity to build leadership through participation in sports teams, student government, and community service. Students can graduate with distinction in Academics, Service, Arts, and Athletics. Through all this work, parents recognize that we pay close attention to each student's academic, social, and emotional well-being.

Located in Chelsea, our community embodies our core values of collaboration, compassion, academic rigor, and diversity and pluralism. Our Labbies put the "lab" in collaborative! Our academically nurturing and rigorous environment fosters curiosity and lifelong learning. Students engage in inquiry across all disciplines. In humanities classes, we combine social studies and ELA and offer enrichment courses on unique topics. To enhance our core curriculum, we provide Regents math and science courses for students ready for the challenge. Students also participate in national competitions (math, writing, and vocabulary) and work with local arts organizations. We are proud of our inclusion program and offer supports so all students succeed: full- and part-time ICT classes, small group specialized instruction, executive functioning support, and all related services. Across the three years, all students take typing, transitions to middle school, coding, advisory, visual art, and drama. Our PA works tirelessly to supplement students' experiences and organize family events such as a Lunar New Year celebration. Former Labbies report back that teachers' high expectations and three years of Spanish have prepared them well for high school.

Spruce Street School
Overview
As a pre-K-8 school, Spruce students can expect many opportunities to build on the successes of elementary school, with an adolescent spin. As a growing school, students and families have a unique opportunity to help shape their education in collaboration with a team of dedicated, talented educators. Our instructional approach emphasizes inquiry and depth. All students engage in daily humanities blocks where they read, write, inquire, debate, and research. Mathematics plays a large role in our curriculum, and happens daily. Our math instruction emphasizes both conceptual understanding and fact fluency. All students engage in science instruction across the week, utilizing our state-of-the-art science lab. Our curriculum also emphasizes social and emotional development through advisory. We offer visual art and music. Students also engage in electives which range from coding to sculpture to dance. At Spruce Street, we expect students to serve as leaders across our school.

Institute For Collaborative Education
Overview
The Institute for Collaborative Education (ICE) is a small, community-focused school where the needs and academic interests of our students come first. Teachers utilize a project-based curriculum that emphasizes student-centered inquiry, forming substantive arguments, written and oral presentations, and the active and ongoing exchange of ideas. At ICE, we encourage students to develop their own points of view and practice the intellectual disciplines of conducting formal research and defending complex academic arguments.

School of the Future
Overview
School of the Future students like our dynamic, creative teachers and interesting classes. Students also like that we know each of them very well and each of them is challenged academically. People who visit often express how alive our school feels! We are proactive about the intellectual, social, and moral growth of our community and see ourselves as people who are helping to raise smart and thoughtful teenagers. Parents appreciate that their children are pushed both in terms of their academics and their personal responsibility. They appreciate our small class size and strong sense of community. Parents like that we work with them towards their child's success. We follow the principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools, including personalized learning and teaching students to use their minds well. Our high school students design four year-long research projects and present their work to a committee of staff and students, and our middle school students begin to prepare for this experience in the sixth grade.

Quest To Learn
Overview
Quest to Learn students are curious, inventive, playful, and empathetic. Students, families, our community partner Institute of Play, and faculty work together to build a robust, rigorous, and responsive school community. Quest to Learn classes are interdisciplinary and they follow a design and project-based learning approach. In their core classes, students take on different roles such as professional publishers, spies for King George III, conflict resolution specialists, or amusement park architects, as they apply new skills and content. Students also enjoy opportunities to pursue interests in design and technology, including game design and digital photography. Students participate in a small group advisory, which provides an opportunity for academic goal-setting, college-readiness activities, and community building. Twice each year, Quest students engage in our Boss Level Challenges, a design-challenge interim where they work in teams to tackle real world problems.

Life Sciences Secondary School
Overview
At Life Sciences Secondary School, we provide an innovative academic curriculum that facilitates the development of critical-thinking skills through project-based learning across all subject areas with a specific focus on the sciences. All middle school students receive extra support in math and ELA during the school day to ensure they are prepared for high school. We offer after-school programming five days per week until 5:30pm through a partnership with Hands In 4 Youth. This program includes academic support as well as athletics, dance, art, computer programming, mock trial, and many other elective options. Students also have the opportunity to attend a sleep-away camp multiple times each year through this partnership. We nurture a safe environment where students know that they are capable of growing and improving. Our commitment is to prepare every student for high school, college, careers, and beyond.

Lower Manhattan Community Middle School (M.S. 896)
Overview
At Lower Manhattan Community (LMC), we work to build a rich middle school experience for all of our students by combining rigorous curriculum, an intense focus on the arts, two years of foreign language, and a strong advisory and community service experience for all students. Our students participate in an enormous range of arts and after-school programs which run Monday-Friday until 5:45pm. Our students take many field trips into the community, to conduct community service, build upon our academic curriculum, and explore our city. Students also attend overnight trips during their middle school experience. LMC is located in the 26 Broadway Building on the sixth and seventh floors. In this historic building, the NYCDOE constructed brand new facilities in 2010. Classrooms are stocked with SMART Boards, laptop computers, iPads, and other technologies.

City Knoll Middle School
Overview
City Knoll Middle School believes that young people have the ability to become whatever they want with the right education, guidance, and support. Our community understands the interconnected world that we live in, and strives to create learning experiences for students through an approach that is in tune with their interests and strengths. We also believe that students learn best when they are provided with real world opportunities to learn through the arts and projects that are relevant to their lives. The arts, public speaking, and presentation are core features of the instructional approach and support the development of critical thinking and creativity. City Knoll has established partnerships with the Museum of Modern Art, NYC Outward Bound, Middle School Quality Initiative, Learning Partners Program, ExpandEd Extra Book Clubs, Manhattan Youth after-school program, Morgan Library Book Arts Project, and Urban Advantage. Students appreciate teachers immersing them in rigorous project-based curricula, while nurturing them to be empathetic, independent individuals capable of shaping their own futures.
