The Maure Magnet School is a growing community that provides a warm, welcoming climate and culture for all stakeholders. It has a school-based focus on communication arts, technology and multi-media to create global citizens for the future. Students are engaged in the various modalities and forms of the arts through project-based units in all grades across multi-subject areas. Student art forms are illuminated within the school and virtually through visual arts displays, music, dance, and plays. They are publicized and viewed on our school-wide social media platforms for all stakeholders. This year due to the pandemic, to better support and address different aspects of social emotional learning (SEL) in everyday practice in blended and remote learning either through individual or across multiple competencies (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making) are being addressed in a tacit way, making explicit connections to the visual and performing arts through standards to better support the on-going learning and curriculum in grade-level Project-Based Learning (PBL) units and utilizing many teaching artists that perform and share their crafts. We collaborate with community based organizations for art residencies in-house and whole school virtually and virtual field trips. Students can then make clear connections to visual arts concepts and generate a strong understanding of the ‘big ideas’ to solve real world problems.
