At P.S. 281, our goal is to ensure that students receive a well-rounded education where the arts balance the academics. We strive to provide students with a varied arts curriculum through school-based arts teachers and outside organizations. As we continue to grow and receive grant funding, we hope to cultivate partnerships with cultural institutions in New York City so our students can reap the benefits of learning in a cultural hub of the world. Ultimately, our goal is for the arts to become integrated with classroom curriculum and to bring the academic content to life. All students at P.S. 281 receive instruction in visual arts and music by full-time arts teachers. The music program is centered around core musical skills and developing a life long appreciation and understanding of music. Students sing a variety of repertoire and learn to play percussion instruments, Orff instruments, piano, recorder, ukulele, and guitar. They develop skills to move expressively, improvise, compose, and read and write music. The visual arts program, started in the fall of 2019, is geared toward teaching for artistic behavior. Students develop studio habits of mind, including experimenting with art materials, practicing techniques, visualizing their ideas, honing their observation skills, reflecting on their practice, and contextualizing their work within the global artistic community. Students develop skills in drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking.
Q43 1
As a result of Covid-19 safety precautions, the Art and Music teachers were limited in the types of learning experiences they were able to offer the students. Class times were shortened to 30 minutes to accommodate the new length of the school day. The Art and Music teacher also pushed into the students' classrooms. The art studio was used as a Kindergarten classroom. Art students were not able to have experiences in painting, printmaking, or paper-mache sculpture due to lack of storage and work space in their regular classrooms. For Covid safety, no artwork was collected. Work was sent home, and was not displayed around the building. However, art students were still able to engage with one another's creations during classroom gallery walks and partner shares. Music students were not able to use the majority of instruments due to the Covid safety protocols. Covid safety precautions and Covid-related changes in funding also prevented us from hosting our usual in-school enrichment programming in dance, filmmaking, coding and art, led by cultural organizations. One positive result of the unusual circumstances of this school year was that all our in-school 3rd through 5th grade students had access to Chromebooks, which they were able to use to research music or find reference images for observation in art class. Though we were not able to host an on-site end-of-year art exhibit, we had a virtual exhibit that included work from each student in our school.

We are a Career and Technical Education (CTE) school with a pathway in digital media. Students are exposed to both high tech and low tech and no tech approaches to arts. Using our four year old MakerSpace, students learn the design process through paper and pencil brainstorming all the way to using our laser cutter and 3D printer to prototype new products using our design thining process.

Peck Slip School students continued to receive arts remotely and in-person. Music, dance and visual arts instruction was provided from school-based certified arts teachers. This year students worked independently to explore their craft deeply. The arts was connected to classroom studies and used for solo study and performances. In dance, 2nd-5th graders performed self-choreographed pieces in-person and remotely.

Essex Street Academy offers three electives for students in the arts: visual arts, theater and music. In the visual arts program, students use a variety of media and learn art history through the study of contemporary and classical artists. Students create a series of works that reflects growth and mastery of technique. In our theater program, students learn memorization skills, performance tactics and perform major scenes from a variety of theatrical genres. Our music program is a performance-based curriculum that focuses on building foundational skills and nurturing a lifelong relationship to music. The students learn and practice vocal and beat making skills and participate in talent shows and an end of year art expo. All three electives are offered to students in all four grades and end in a performance based assessment task.

Due to the pandemic, all arts classes occurred remotely this year. Most of our students take Studio Art 1 and 2 in their tenth grade year to fulfill their required two art credits. The courses are designed to meet the required benchmarks and performance indicators of the NYCDOE Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Visual Arts. Additionally, eleventh and twelfth grade students had the opportunity to take Advanced Placement Studio Art as an elective, and create and submit a complete portfolio to the College Board for 2D Design or Drawing. We also offered Drama as an elective to students in grades 11 and 12. Students could also participate in virtual guitar club as an extracurricular activity. We continued to assist our students with applying to various remote arts programs throughout New York City. We intend to return to fully hands-on, in-person studio-centered arts instruction for the 2021-2022 school year.

This year, we maintained our arts teaching staff of two certified art teachers and expanded our art department by adding a third certified art teacher who will focus on developing our work based learning curriculum for all of our students. Students at The Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction have the choice of taking two distinct pathways in visual arts. One pathway leads to a certification in Architecture and one leads to an Arts Endorsed diploma in Fine Arts. To help students make this choice, all entering freshmen take a year-long Foundations course which introduces them to the visual vocabulary and skills of art and design. Students then choose which pathway is right for them. Over the next three years, students will then have art or design every day and will engage in a variety of 2D and 3D projects. Our school maintains an active design studio, an art and sculpture facility with ceramic kiln, and a fabrication lab with 3D printers, a CNC router, and a laser cutter. As part of their chosen pathway, students will also participate in a variety of career discovery activities. These include job site visits, guest speakers, and afterschool internships. Twice a year students in both pathways present their work to a panel of arts professionals and contractors. During the pandemic, arts students focused primarily on digital media and architecture. In this new virtual setting, students were also able to learn from artists and designers from around the world.

Lower Manhattan Arts Academy (LoMA) is dedicated to nurturing the artist in all students. Students take introductory classes in music, dance, drama and visual arts before committing to a three-year major in one of the disciplines. LoMA offers an arts endorsement pathway for students. Students receive in-house arts instruction and are exposed to a wide variety of cultural institutions and community partnerships within the arts. In addition to working with full-time certified arts teachers, our students work with a wide variety of teaching artists in their arts and academic classes. Students at LoMA regularly attend theater, music and dance performances as well as visit museums and cultural institutions. They have numerous opportunities to perform, direct and choreograph, including events such as our fall drama, spring musical, talent show and the Majors’ performance. Students at LoMA have a wide range of arts experiences incorporated into their daily academic classes as well as a wide range of extracurricular arts opportunities from which to choose.

Public School 347 has been very fortunate to share a dynamic licensed visual arts teacher and a motivated licensed dance teacher with the hign school in our building. Their time is split between the two schools, so we are able to offer dance for half of the year and visual arts for the second half. During a typical school year (and this year was anything but), we would supplement the in-school instruction with visits to the many cultural experiences that NYC offers. Even though this year barred us from venturing out, the teachers have been very proactive in bringing our students to virtual venues to experience art and dance beyond the school walls. By taking advantage of free virtual programs this year, we were able to offer our students sporadic "field trips" to spark their creative minds. Our arts teachers also took it upon themselves to write a grant that was shared between the high school and our school to purchase additional supplies. Through a grant for English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities in the Arts, Children's Museum of the Arts was able to provide additional art classes for our Pre-K through 8th grade students. Many of our students come from households where the first language is not English. The arts allow all students to express themselves in a langauge that everyone understands.

Students have the option of engaging in one of two four-year tracks: visual arts and theatre. The instructional focus is college and career readiness around these disciplines. A multitude of partnerships leverage the expertise in NYC for the benefit of our students.

At the NYC iSchool, experiences in the arts are offered as both modules and core experiences. All students are eligible to participate in these courses, which include: Introduction to Drawing, Advanced Drawing, Introduction to Painting, Advanced Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Painting NYC, Comics, Children's Bookmaking, Guitar 1 and 2, Piano 1 and 2, Beat Making, Inside the Music, and Bash the Trash. In the Children’s Bookmaking module, iSchool students travel to an elementary school and meet with first graders to survey their interests and likes. After consulting with professional children's book authors and gaining a thorough understanding of the various types of children's books that exist, iSchool students spend the quarter writing, illustrating, and binding a children's book for the child who they met. At the end of the quarter, the iSchool students bring their finished books back to the elementary school to read their stories. In the Inside the Music module, students become classical music composers whose pieces are performed by professional musicians at a final concert. Through this course, students learn music theory and techniques of composition in order to produce and direct the performance of complex pieces.

Emma Lazarus High School is a transfer school that serves over-aged, and under-credited English as a New Language (ENL) students. Our student body is comprised of newcomers to the United States with limited English acquisition. We offer stand-alone ENL courses through an English immersion model. Our students have limited time to learn English and pass Regents. However, we ensure that students meet the city and state requirements for the arts and when possible expose them to additional arts and cultural opportunities throughout New York City. Students visit museums, attend Broadway shows, and visit other cultural institutions. We solicit the professional services of arts organizations, such as the Lincoln Center’s Theater LEAD program, the New York City Horticultural Society, Manhattan Downtown Children’s Museum, CITYarts, and NexGen Youth Theatre. We believe that students learn best through experiential and project-based instruction and offer visual arts to every entering student. We spiral additional arts opportunities through both integrated and stand-alone courses. Moreover, we believe that arts integration is an effective method for students to learn and acquire a new language. Additionally, we believe that the arts bolsters lifelong learning and critical thinking skills that students will take with them when they graduate. Lastly, we believe in ‘art for art’s sake’ and therefore, we provide our students with meaningful exposure to the arts across the entire school.

The High School for Environmental Studies (HSES) provides students with opportunities to engage in the arts for all four years. As a theme-based school which focuses on developing environmental stewards, we are proud to be able to provide our students with a Common Core aligned, well-rounded education that places a strong value on an arts education. In addition to offering our students beginning and advanced courses in chorus, orchestra, band and theater, we also offer ceramics, painting and drawing, as well as dance courses through a partnership with Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation. HSES is a culturally rich community that enjoys a great deal of student involvement in our arts program. Our teachers are dedicated to providing our students with meaningful experiences and exposure to a wide array of art forms, including environmentally themed arts projects.

The mission of Professional Performing Arts High School (PPAS) is to provide professional performing arts instruction to all students in grades six through twelve in a variety of disciplines. Students are also provided a rigorous academic curriculum that will lead to exceptional higher education choices that include, but are not limited to, top performing arts colleges and conservatories. The performing arts curriculum offers all students a unique opportunity to study the arts in a professional environment. Professional artists offer training to meet the performing arts learning needs of students who are passionate about the arts and committed to the study of the arts. High school students major in professional studios in dance, drama, musical theater, and vocal music. Middle school students participate in a variety of performing arts classes to increase their exposure to various types of performing art forms. These classes include acting, dance, singing, and music appreciation. PPAS has a unique programming structure where the school partners with professional arts organizations that provide top quality instruction in professional settings. Students take classes in site-specific high caliber studios, which include off-Broadway theaters, concert halls, and ballet and tap dance studios. Students present concerts, plays, and other productions throughout the school year, both in-house and in premier performance spaces, across New York City
Q43 1
Our arts instruction was offered only remotely this past school year, which allowed students to follow schedules which are similar to in-school classroom instruction. The decrease in the number of hours of instruction from previous years reflects an adjustment to the way in which we are accounting for the hours of PhysEd instruction, which is built into the arts programs but should probably not be included in the hours of arts instruction, for the purpose of this survey.

All students take a visual arts elective in grade 9 and a two credit visual arts course in grade 10 exploring a variety of media through collage, drawing, painting and mural design. They study contemporary artists and explore the issues of identity and self. Students have the option to apply for Advanced Art in eleventh and twelfth grade, where they develop a portfolio for post-secondary arts programs. In partnership with Manhattan Class Company, students explore drama integrated into all English classes, from grades nine through twelve, with reinterpretations of Shakespeare, spoken word poetry, dramatic interpretation of American novels, and rhetoric. There is also an afterschool drama program, which culminates in our annual school play. Our afterschool program offers rock music club and dance club.

Our goal for the visual arts program is to provide a four-year arc of meaning-making through a variety of media. Each year students will engage in art making through the lenses of a studio based approach with a focus on the creative process. We will also seek to explore the theme of identity and our place in our world, both historically and in the present. In addition, real world opportunities and projects will be the foundation of the curriculum. Students will be introduced to maintaining a sketchbook for the collection of ideas, lean heavily into the design process, analyze and interpret a wide range of perspectives represented by multi-ethnic artists, and utilize the vast opportunities to seeing art in person through visiting museums and gallery spaces. With regards to music, the curriculum is designed so that students can derive a meaningful learning experience regardless of prior knowledge and experience in music.
Q43 1
This year we have made some major changes to the way we schedule courses offered by moving to a year long course structure-with no semesters. That has changed what courses are offered and when. We also have taken this year to dive deep into CRE and SEL practices.

School of the Future High School has expanded over the last few years to include a full-time visual arts teacher, a full-time drama teacher, and a four day a week music teacher. Students in both the middle and high school receive arts instruction one to two times per week throughout the school year. Our ninth through twelfth grade students choose their electives, and the middle school students have assigned arts classes.
Q43 1
SOF is a small, secondary school that serves children from sixth grade to twelfth grade in Manhattan’s District Two. As many of our Middle School students choose to stay for High School, we enjoy the unique opportunity to foster our students’ growth from the time they leave elementary school to the time they are accepted into college. Close to 100 percent of our graduating seniors go on to college, many with scholarships.

We are a dynamic learning community, and our staff comprises dedicated, intelligent, and caring professionals. SOF is a college preparatory school that offers rigorous academics geared toward college expectations. Many aspects offer a unique and deeply connected student experience, including an average class size of twenty-five; the prioritizing of critical and creative thinking; strong teacher collaboration; a diverse, integrated student body; and the ability to see and know our students well as learners and individuals. Students are afforded many special opportunities that expose them to the richness of world beyond traditional school. Examples include internships, a strong art and theater program, a computer science program, competitive sports, courses at local colleges, foreign exchange trips, and frequent field trips, including trips to other US cities.

The NYC Museum School offers a four-year studio art sequence aligned with the NYCDOE Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. All art courses are interdisciplinary and taught by a fully licensed and certified arts teacher. Unique to our school are the "museum module" courses, which allow students to take specialized museum-based courses every week that correlate with in-school Regents-based courses. Our goal is to provide students with as rich an arts education as possible while reinforcing the connections between the arts and the core disciplines. Students frequently visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Japan Society, the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of the City of New York, the Paley Center for Media, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of the Moving Image, and more! The arts are a highly valued part of the Museum School experience.

Visual arts and music are offered to all students in compliance with NYS graduation requirements. The visual arts program includes studio art and art history, with an introduction to artists and artwork with a global perspective. Students experience creativity as a means of expression through an understanding and application of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design with culminating exhibitions. The music program offers students a hands-on experience of music creation: making beats, sampling, writing melodies and chord progression, and song construction. Students also learn the different genres of music and learn the history of American musical forms. Programs are aligned with NYS and NYC Standards in The Arts. Our staff is committed to offering students a variety of experiences in the arts, including off-site visits to museums, cultural events, and performances throughout the year. Student and staff theater productions and events are developed and produced in-house during the school year. Also offered is Stage Craft, a theater elective class, where students collaborate on multiple-devised performances and presentations. College level visual arts courses are available to students for college credit through La Guardia Community College and the College Board programs, both on the High School for Health Profesions and Human Services campus.
Q43 1
Physical constraints greatly limit activities in The Arts because of the overcrowded and multi-use classroom spaces.

Murray Hill Academy has a robust arts program that specializes in both art history and studio art. Our studio art teacher works with students on a variety of highly engaging projects using different art materials such as clay, watercolors, wood, acrylic paint, paper mache, magazines, color pencils and printmaking materials. To supplement our studio arts program, we have been working with Learning through an Expanded Arts Program (LeAp) to bring a professional artist into our school two days a week. We also partner with CITYarts to provide a teaching artist that creates large-scale murals with students in our afterschool art club. We also work closely with NYC Piano Academy to host an afterschool piano club that culminates in an end-of-year recital at the Liederkranz Foundation. We continue to partner with Hook Arts Media to hire a dance instructor to teach hip hop dance classes and poetry. We also have an Introduction to Music class that is very popular and a powerful theater class that students really enjoy. We also offer a yoga and meditation class that helps students find balance and peace during their busy day. Additionally, our content teachers are committed to exposing students to the arts and bring our students to many plays, movies, and museums throughout the year, taking advantage of our location in midtown Manhattan. Many of our students take more than the minimum two credits of art. Our goal is continuous exposure to art as a vital part of a well-rounded education.

We are looking forward to increasing our arts program each year. As the pandemic comes to an end, we are able to offer more programs to our students. That will be increasing professional development and arts equipment for our school.

We have and will continue to integrate the arts into our curriculum with the strong belief that the arts enhance language development which is critical for our students. Students also have the opportunity to expand their involvement in the arts through elective classes, including AdPlacement Art and multiple afterschool programs. New learners of English develop linguistic, cognitive and cultural skills for informed participation in our city's diverse and creative society.

As a Career and Technical Education (CTE) school, the arts program at Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology is rooted in our Digital Design & Animation (DDA) Pathway. Instructionally, we focus on Visual and Digital Arts, however we provide music, theater and dance opportunities through our clubs. As ninth graders, all of our students are enrolled in Mixed Media Art. This course introduces them to a variety of mediums as well as artforms, included but not limited to pixel art, street art, still life, and digital art. For students who select the DDA Pathway, they focus another three years on digital art and animation using software such as Illustrator, Photoshop and Maya.

Talent Unlimited High School (TUHS) seeks to educate, empower, and prepare students for work in the professional arts world and beyond. As a Career and Technical Education portfolio school, students engage in sequential and scaffold series of knowledge, skills, and internship experiences. Work-based learning tools are designed to train students in the discipline of the artist while equipping them with a vast array of analytical and creative skills. TUHS believes the goal of training students in the arts transcends the art form itself. We endeavor to prepare our students for the rigors of any professional work environment through disciplined performing arts training coupled with an uncompromising academic education. Our students work closely with various arts organizations and industry professionals, including the All-City Ensembles, American Composers Orchestra, American Dance Legacy, The Folk Art Museum, Circle in the Square, Classic Stage Company, Crane School of Music, Exploring The Arts, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Martha Graham Dance Center, Metropolitan Opera, NYC Honors Music Festival, NYSSMA, 92nd St Y, Opus Dance Theatre, Park Avenue Armory, Pentacle, Paul Taylor School, Schubert Theater, Theater Development Fund (TDF), and Western Wind Vocal Ensemble. We are also expanding offerings to ensure students are educated as whole artist with depth of understanding in their own art form coupled with breadth in related disciplines, including college-level Advanced Placement Music Theory and courses in theatrical design.

We practice a choice-based visual arts program following the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) pedagogy. At the heart of the art curriculum are eight Studio Habits of Mind, which artists practice across all media: Develop Craft, Engage & Persist, Envision, Express, Observe, Reflect, Stretch & Explore, and Understand Art Worlds. Students learn about historically underrepresented artists and techniques, and the artwork that children create is authentic work created from a high level of independence and responsibility. Student work is uploaded to an online student gallery on Artsonia.com. This year each grade had their own virtual art show, a community celebration of children’s artwork. The music program provides experiences that are aligned to NYC Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts as children are creating, singing, and performing on instruments. Choral ensembles rehearse for and perform multiple concerts annually. Music literacy begins when kindergartners learn to express pitch through melodic contour drawings and singing in solfege. Second graders complete a unit of study on instruments in which they learn how to identify and categorize instruments through listening to various ensembles and genres. Third graders participate in Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program which culminates in an interactive performance at Carnegie Hall. Students learn basic piano keyboard skills, and the band program performs a repertoire that spans from latin jazz to contemporary pop.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School is a business focus school committed to developing young men and women with active and creative minds with a sense of understanding and compassion for others, and the courage to act on their beliefs. We believe that the arts provide a platform for our students to do just this and that the arts and academia are mutual supports for our students’ growth. We strive to ensure that our students receive quality arts instruction and authentic arts experiences that can fully develop the whole student and prepare him/her for success in college and beyond. We have had arts based residencies in English, History, Spanish, Business and we infuse our academic curriculum with culminating arts based projects. Our students explore personal, global, political, and social perspectives through the lens of the arts. In our partnership with Roundabout Theatre Company, students train as lighting designers, sound designers, and stage managers for school productions and are paid interns for our theater rentals. We have multiple performances/ exhibitions throughout the year to showcase the diverse talents of our students. Despite the challenges of this year, we engaged our students in arts residencies, performances by professional companies and held virtual and in-person galleries showcasing student artwork, photography, film, poetry and theater. Our arts programming provided social and emotional support for our students to process the events of the past year.
Q43 1
This was a challenging year with Covid, school openings, closings and safety protocols. We were not able to do as much as we normally do with live student performances and trips. We had a lot of students who opted for remote school, and so we had to adapt to digital art platforms. Our students needed support and the arts were a perfect way for them to express themselves and what they've been through.

Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts is a small high school which offers a full academic program and comprehensive theatre arts classes. It is a program designed for students who aspire to work in the theatre arts field either as actors or behind the scenes. It is our belief that students benefit from a holistic theatre training program. In an effort to create well-rounded theatre artists, students do not have specific arts majors at Repertory, but instead are immersed in a curriculum that exposes them to all the theatrical disciplines: acting, music, dance and technical theatre. Our location, in the heart of the New York City theatre district of Times Square, supports our school focus. We offer small classes which allow our students the opportunity to experience all aspects of theatre from production to performance. Students have the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom by participating in the many student productions which include student written works, assembly performances, a schoolwide straight play and a musical production each year, and advanced level studio play and musical. We expect all of our students to maintain high academic standards and to possess the willingness to explore all the imagination and creativity of theatre arts. Our mission is to offer post-secondary access and opportunities for all of our students through a robust performing arts and academic program that emphasizes inclusiveness, creativity, higher-order thinking and self-reflection.

Union Square Academy for Health Sciences (U.S.A.) continues to be committed to providing a rich arts experience for all students. With a full-time music teacher and the investment of an electric piano keyboard lab, students in grades 9-12 are immersed in a comprehensive arts curriculum based on units and lessons designed around the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and NYCDOE Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and the Common Core Standards. Music Making, Music Literacy, Music History, Cultural Connections and Life-Long Careers in the Arts were the major themes of study this year. In addition to the NYS Standards for Learning in the Arts based curriculum, a special focus was placed on social-emotional learning this year. Students had the opportunity and responsibility to become educated readers, writers, performers and appropriate audience members and to give and receive constructive feedback to each other. The majority of U.S.A. students were opted for remote-instruction due to the global pandemic, but that did not stop our students from continuing to "create, present, produce and respond" in music class. We expanded our use of technology this year, and we look very much forward to coming back together in person stronger than ever for the 2021-2022 school year at Union Square Academy For Health Sciences. We are planning our events and musical performances.

This year has been a mix of hybrid and fully remote learning. Students have continued to learn the history, analysis, and interpretation of art, while doing some drawing, digital photography, and digital art projects at home. With our new 3D printer, students have been able to create their own 3D designs that they were then able to see in real form. For next year, we are looking forward to the use of our new printing press for intaglio printmaking and an expansion of our digital photography department with brand new cameras, tripods, and high quality photo printers.

POST WORK ON PADLET
Q42 1 Rev
Liberty High School Academy for Newcomers supports arts learning as vehicles of expression, discovery, and innovation. We are dedicated to teach arts education to our English as a New Language (ENL) population of whom we serve students of diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. Students have the opportunity to be introduced to the arts, especially in visual and theatrical avenues, and to explore and empower already seeded talents through art displays, participation in outside contests, creating video and book productions, and writing and performing plays. Students have the opportunity to engage in rigorous class content tasks that celebrate the diversification of historical global arts and tales of human history. At Liberty, we work for the full potentiality of students as we dually enhance their English language acquisition.

The visual arts program at Urban Assembly New York Harbor School remains a rich one-year program offered to freshmen. Our full-time certified visual arts teacher delivers the program. The first semester covers fundamentals of 2D drawing and rendering, eventually moving into the themed projects of maritime and New York history. Assignments explore mythical sea creatures, cityscapes, maritime art, street art, art and iconography of the Statue of Liberty, and vessel design. Students work in a variety of media, including pencil, color pencil, marker, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, and oil pastel.
Q43 1
We are a Maritime Trades CTE school located on Governors Island. Due to the small school and that our students begin our CTE programs in sophomore year, we are only able to offer one year of arts programming.

Consists of a project that demonstrates growth over time in one of the following areas: visual arts, dramatic creative writing, film/video or computer design. The candidate outlines a plan for the project with a mentor. Once a significant amount of work is completed, a formal critique will be scheduled with an outside evaluator. Following the critique, the student must submit a written response to his/her mentor. When the candidate and mentor feel that the work demonstrates proficiency, the final project must be presented to the public. Visual arts projects must include a short text as part of the presentation. Given this outcome, many diverse art opportunities are provided to students to allow them to explore, develop and improve in various art medium drawing, painting, theater, film, photography and darkroom, dance, and printmaking. Students develop individual projects after exploration across mediums that they are eager to pursue with a mentor teacher (for their proficiency).

Like many schools across the city, we have experienced a tremendous disruption to our traditional arts program due the pandemic. However, we adjusted the program online. We continued to offer arts learning through our collaboration with an arts to community based organization to provide arts integration with four classes. We also provided opportunities for students in art class to showcase their work in virtual galleries.

Richard R. Green High School of Teaching (RRGHST) offers an introductory visual arts course, Studio Art 1: an exploration of art media to develop imagination, self-expression, and art as a form of communication. Aligned with the Common Core Standards and the NYCDOE Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, this course focuses on team building skills, critical thinking, complex problem solving, writing, self-confidence, literacy, decision-making, and school achievement. This course supports intellectual and educational development along with personal and social development. Students have the opportunity to participate in schoolwide art exhibitions. An advanced Studio Art 2 class was added to our course offerings. When combined with Art History in the junior year, students are encouraged to graduate with the six-credit art certification distinction. Our Art History elective includes a minimum of one monthly trip to local museums. The six-credit sequence is an elective.
