Our school community is dedicated to the arts as it benefits our students’ Social Emotional Learning and helps them with creativity, coping and expression. Visual artists explored drawing, and 2D graphic design. Students practiced the elements of art and deepened their expressive and critical thinking skills. Choral musicians developed critical insights and engaged in learning and making music. They developed, organized, and analyzed artistic work through historical and contemporary pieces of music. Dancers became literate in the culture, practice, and science of dance. Green Magnet Production Company activists used photography to explore their neighborhoods and nature in the urban environment. They used graphic arts to advocate for using reusable bottles in school. Our digital citizens and computer scientists studied digital literacy. They used code to express their feelings, empathize with others and share their stories. Students designed apps, created games and movies and programmed animations. Theater artists used their personal experiences and social emotional awareness to create and perform stories through lessons of playwriting, acting, directing and technical design.

We encourage our teachers and their students to visit museums and cultural events throughout the year. This year we embarked on a journey tapping into all types of online museums and cultural organizations. We watched virtual concerts and saw museums around the world. Our school fosters an environment where art is displayed throughout our building and now on virtual galleries. We believe that experiences in the arts promotes cultural awareness. It also provides an outlet for self-expression which our students may other otherwise never be exposed to.

The Emerson School Art Program is made to try and re-ignite art curriculum that may have been missed or subverted in students' elementary years. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade are taught skills and techniques to give themselves a broader view of the possibilities of art. The main goal of our program is to give the students the basic tools that they need to create great personal works of visual arts and music and strive to grow as artists. An important part of this is to keep students interested by molding the projects we do to the interests of the majority of the students while also keeping the principles of design and basic skills firmly in place. Our Visual Arts program covers the foundation of art with Drawing, Color and a Painting unit. With our drawing unit, we go over the basics of line but reach the technique of drawing in 3D. In our color unit, we touch on the basics of color but also dive into the realm of optical illusions. Our painting unit focuses on learning how paint works as a versatile and expressive medium. In order to keep students engaged with the creation of artwork, the curriculum should be able to change if necessary or to alter a project to fit the students better. Our Music program consists of Theory, Composing, Keyboard and World Drumming. Students apply their music skills in creating original works, diverse in content and engaging for all students. Students learn about world music, different genres, the artistic process and collaboration.

Our school’s vision is to provide a quality Arts Program which aligns with 21st century skills, the New York City Blueprint for the Arts, and encourages opportunities for students to develop their own voice. Teaching teams work together to share best practices and incorporate storytelling, history, theater, and technology through the different art forms. Teachers in the arts department collaborate with their colleagues from other departments to make the arts an integral and visible part of our school culture. Teachers continue to develop new ways and ideas to showcase the arts!

The Arts Department at Queens Collegiate serves students in grades 6-12. We offer visual art, music, and theater. Our middle school students take two art forms each year, alternating with physical education (PE) every other day, one for each semester. Our high school students also typically take two arts classes per year, alternating with PE every other day, one for each semester. Courses in visual arts cover a variety of technique and media, including the use of some digital media. The music classes include Piano and Rock Band. This year's high school theater course was Multicultural Theatre, but past years have included Theatre for Social Change, The Fundamentals of Acting and The Business of Theatre. Outside the classroom students are able to participate in Art Club and Theatre/Cinema Club, both student-run with the arts teacher as an advisor. We produced one production this year and had the opportunity to see many stage productions, including Broadway shows. Students performed music and dance as part of our schoolwide assemblies. At Queens Collegiate, we believe in educating the whole child and believe strongly that arts education is necessary in achieving this goal.

Jamaica Children’s School was founded on a belief that we want our students to excel both academically and socially. We cultivate an environment where students can be successful members of our school community as well as society as a whole. Every student has visual arts every week. Children have the opportunity to explore a variety of art media including Painting and Sculpture; students all learn about different artists each month and analyze their work. Art has always played an integral role in the development and execution of our curriculum, and our students have more opportunities to enrich their art and cultural experiences as well as discover their passions.

Public School 349 currently serves students in Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. We are continuing to provide various forms of arts instruction to all of our students and the arts continue to be an important part of our school educational philosophy. Our music program, through Music and the Brain, continues to provide our students with music instruction designed to develop their proficiency in language, reading, math, and cognition.Due t COVID-19, we reduced the number of partnerships with cultural organizations but maintained a partnership with S-Cool Sounds for all grades and the Guggenheim Museum for our second graders. All visits from cultural organizations were virtual. We hosted multiple STEAM nights for parents and students to participate in art projects conducted in-house by our Magnet Coordinator. We are currently in the fourth year of our federal magnet grant and will continue to incorporate more and more arts instruction into our core curriculum.

At PS 354 we aim to leverage arts integration through STEM activities. Students are given opportunities to think creatively and explore digital and traditional arts as a method of communication and expression. Through the collaborative use of teaching artists and partnership of our after-school program, students have meaningful opportunities to explore their identity and the world around them through integrated arts opportunities.

Forest Hills High School Academy of Instrumental Music and Vocal Music as well as the Drama Academy provide students with rigorous conservatory style training and a challenging academic program. The Academy of Instrumental and Vocal Music provides intensive sequential instruction on all band and orchestral instruments. We offer classes in Music Theory, Composition, Performance Practice and intensive Choral instruction. Instrumental music students participate in: Jazz Band, Beginning Band, Intermediate and Concert Band, Beginning Strings, Intermediate Strings, Symphonic Orchestra, as well as Beginning and Advanced Percussion Ensemble. Vocal music students participate in Vocal Training, Intermediate Chorus, and Concert Choir. Our scholars perform at various events throughout the city, including a minimum of a Winter Concert and Spring Arts Festival annually. The Drama Academy provides students the opportunity to study the dramatic arts through a rigorous and specialized program involving acting, directing, play writing, film making, and play productions. The fall and spring theater productions showcase the arts talents of Forest Hills High School students. In addition, we offer Fine Arts (Visual Art) classes working in various mediums. Despite the pandemic, members of the Forest Hills High School Arts classes were still able to perform in three virtual concerts/arts festivals, as well as virtual theater productions during the 2020-2021 school year!
Q43 1
All arts classes were conducted 100% virtually during the 2020-2021 school year. The biggest challenge, of course, was the inability to have any two musicians sing or play back their parts at the same time due to the lag on everyone's various devices. In spite of this, we were able to perform three virtual concerts, two theater productions as well as a visual art festival.

Hillcrest High School offers sequential four-year instruction in Visual Arts, Theater and Music. Each department is taught by a team of licensed teachers and supplemented with visiting artist organizations such as Learning through an Expanded Arts Program (LeAp) and internship programs with outside organizations such as: The Cooper Union, Cooper Hewitt, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and The Museum of Art and Design. All subjects culminate in either the Regents, Advanced Placement (AP) level classes and the option for College Now courses through Queensborough Community College. A variety of levels and electives are offered to the entire student body including: String Orchestra, Chorus, Studio Fine Arts, Media Arts, Theater and Technical Theater. Performance and exhibition opportunities include two schoolwide festivals of the arts, a full production musical and separate grade-level theater productions at the school in either the black box theater or the auditorium. Student open mics and film screening happen at intervals during the school year in the smaller black box performance space. Students enter citywide and national visual and performing arts contests as part of the school’s programming and have taken home awards and scholarships on the city, state and national levels. Our students are accepted to the colleges of their choice and are supported by a wonderful team of guidance counselors to help them realize their dreams.

All students take visual arts and music for a half-year each. Dance is offered within the Physical Education department and Chorus is offered as a club. The visual arts sequence includes required courses in drawing and painting techniques, color theory, and design principles. Students choose from three pathways: Commercial Art, Graphic Communications, and Web Design. Commercial Art students use traditional art media and computer applications, prepare portfolios, take the industry standards-based Skills USA exam, and earn six credits from Queensborough Community College. Graphic Communications focuses on the creative use of computer applications, digital photography, and commercial printing. Web Design focuses on designing for the web, including both hand coding and computer applications. Students take Adobe certification examinations at the end of these sequences. All visual arts students have the opportunity to apply for internships and work-based learning opportunities and receive Career and Technical Education (CTE) endorsements on their diplomas. For the 2020-2021 school year, visual arts and music were taught remotely even upon students returning to school.

We offer Basic Studio Arts for the required graduation credits. This class introduces students to a variety of arts mediums and practices to broaden their understanding of the importance of the arts, creativity, and design thinking in the real world. They will make connections between the art that is practiced in class to real world application, worldwide practices, and necessity in culture and society. We also offer an Introduction to Music class. This course allows students to express their creativity through song creation. The students also learn how to play musical instruments.

Our Beginning Music course is designed for students experiencing their first vocal/choral class. This level emphasizes fundamental vocal development, music literacy, and the introduction to ensemble singing. The music curriculum addresses the four Learning Strands. Opportunities are provided for students to explore ways in which the content of the various disciplines within and outside the arts are interrelated with those of music. Our Studio Art course introduces students to the fundamentals of art: students will be encouraged to explore media and think, talk and write about art, students will build foundation skills as well as the beginning of a portfolio through hands-on practice and assignments. Through a variety of lessons, students will study color, line, value, shape, form, perspective, mark-making, and observational drawing. Students will gain historical and cultural knowledge through their exposure to different artists and will learn about art criticism to evaluate and appreciate other’s works

The Public School 33Q visual arts program spans all grades and nurtures a diverse range of visual arts literacy while developing intuition, reasoning, and imagination into unique forms of expression and communication. Students can participate in a number of exhibitions and showcases each year offered at the school site or in collaboration with a community partner. In addition, we will conduct live art classes this year as well as remote classes. Our arts teacher will teach art virtually teaching education of art/artists and hands on work. Materials will be offered to students who are working remotely from home if they require them. Some materials include crayons, markers, paper etc. Students will visit and participate in virtual arts workshops and art shows. The majority of the school will be remote and some classes will be scheduled to have arts class virtually and in person once a week for a 45 minute period.

By providing all students with high quality education, we not only prepare them for the work place but foster personal development and full-fledged citizenship as well. Our educated students will be able to comprehend our multicultural society and face the challenges of the future. Our goal as an art educator goes beyond the training of better artists to focus on the education of responsible, well-educated people who participate actively in the creation of their world. Art education can achieve this goal by being intellectual demanding, teaching higher thinking skills, aesthetic values, abstract reasoning, and creative problem-solving. Because of the absence of absolute answers in the arts, participating in the creation of an artwork teaches students how to envision and set goals, determine a technique and exercise it, evaluate and solve problems. Using arts to sharpen awareness, develop talent, boast self-esteem and provide a personal and meaningful purpose contributes to students’ emotional well-being and provides a positive influence for at-risk students. Arts education also provides special needs students with the tools to express and communicate within their disabilities. The arts, which we are teaching, overlaps and reinforces learning in other subject areas by providing interdisciplinary experiences. Our arts curriculum is designed to provide a holistic understanding of the world, enhancing general education. We focus on art as a tool of expression and communication.

During the 2020-2021 school year, scholars in the building received music and movement classes from the enrichment teacher. The teacher also had designated days to facilitate classes for the remote scholars. Teachers in the building remotely infuse the arts within their lessons so scholars can be exposed to the discipline. Teachers and scholars took advantage of the free arts performances and lessons that were performed virtually, such as AESOP's Fables, Afro-Brazilian performace and Let Freedom Swing. The third grade had an opportunity to participate in a jazz residency via the S'Cool Sounds organization. They were able to learn about the history and instruments of the musical genre from a professional jazz musician. The school participated in an afterschool CASA grant for eight scholars to participate in dance classes faciliated by The Edge School of the Arts. Scholars received ballet and tap lessons through the program remotely. P.S. 36 also has a Drum Circle program facilitated by The Better Jamaica organization. Scholars participate in an after-school program where they learn to play the Djembe drum and other hand percussion instruments remotely.

Our visual arts program at Public School 95Q is focused on literacy-based art experiences aligned with the NYC Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. Our students develop art skills through exploration of various techniques incorporating the principles and elements of art. Through art critiques, students develop critical thinking skills and speak using the vocabulary of art. The music program at Public School 95Q is aligned to the NYC Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. Our goals for the music program this year were to introduce musical concepts such as rhythm, melody and harmony and have students engaged in practicing and applying the musical concepts by clapping, tapping or singing. Our Arts program also incorporates the art of the dance. Through dance, students are given the opportunity to express themselves with the use of cultural and classical dance techniques. Students study many dance forms; including ballet, tap, jazz, Bengali, Filipino, African and salsa. At Public School 95Q, we believe that giving students the ability to express themselves through all the arts helps build character, drive, and lays a foundation for future success.

Public School 131 maintains a firm commitment to arts education by offering a myriad of opportunities for students to engage in different arts disciplines. Our dance teacher is fully state certified and provides rigorous, NYC Standards-based instruction in conjunction with the Common Core Learning Standards. Providing twenty-five weekly periods of dance classes, our faculty includes one certified arts instructor. Despite functioning at nearly 200% capacity (and currently undergoing renovation), Public School 131 empowers students to blossom as artists, develop literacy through the arts, cultivate interdisciplinary connections, and grow into adults who pursue the arts as an integral aspect of the human condition.

Q42 1 Rev
We continue to grow, as the students have learned about new artists and ways of thinking from the Future Arts Initiative Program. Our students have learned new ways and techniques to respond to their artwork, by use of written response as well as think, pair, and share techniques. Students are encouraged to write meaningful thoughts and words on their artwork to add another level of individuality. Students continue to respond to lesson plans that are aligned with New York State Standards as well as the new York City Blueprint for the Arts in thoughtful ways. Classroom teachers provide additional arts education both in person and remotely.
We continue to form partnerships with CASA for theater and with Dancing Classrooms for dance. These two additional programs help round out our arts program both in person and virtually.
Next year, we would like to add music to our arts program.
Q43 1
With 80% of staff and students remote this year, arts education has been challenging. We are thankful for our outside partnerships being able to provide their services remotely. Our classroom teachers have risen to the task of providing art to our students as our art teacher retired earlier this year. The students look forward to the hands-on experience both in person and remote.

Public School 135's arts program includes instruction in visual arts, music and drama. The arts are integrated into the school day via cluster programs, cultural arts organizations partnerships and teacher led instruction. Teachers integrate the arts with other subject areas such as English Language Arts, Social Studies and Science to provide students with learning opportunities that engage all their learning styles. We feel that it is important to expose our students to the world of the creative arts to engage them as lifelong learners and develop all of their abilities. Public School 135 values the arts in education and we are always looking for opportunities to expand our arts programs for our students.

The Ronald McNair School (PS/MS 147Q) provides students with an outlet of expression through the arts. The Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts are used to guide the implementation of arts programs in our school community. Pre-K through 8th grade students that meet in person and remotely receive instruction twice weekly from our music and visual arts teachers. Additionally, students in grades 3-8 participate in Art Club. Through an interdisciplinary approach, English literacy and social studies are infused in the arts. Students' artistic talents are celebrated during assembly programs, art displays and district events.
Q43 1
Due to covid restrictions, we were unable to hold any in-person events such as art exhibits and concerts. Our Music teacher created videos for School Spirit Week and Kindergarten graduation.

Our school art exhibit will be virtual as well this year.

The ultimate goal of our school arts program is to provide all students with an increased understanding of arts history and how art is used to express our feelings and beliefs. Students will learn to compare diverse art forms and develop a respect for the arts. In addition, students will discover, develop and enhance their personal abilities. The arts program at Public School 176Q is comprised of music, performing arts and visual arts. We strive to provide our students with quality music, dance and visual arts programs to develop young minds and build character. Our program includes but is not limited to: Chorus, Band, Piano, Drama, Dance and Conceptual Art. We set high standards and provide challenges that foster discipline and self-esteem because we believe the arts program is the heartbeat of our soul. It aids in the development and control of emotions while enhancing scholar’s creativity.

The arts program for the school year 2020-2021 reaches each child with arts education being a combination of some visual arts and art of music. The visual arts program included but was not limited to creating Pop art, 3D art using the website www.pixilart.com, model magic abstract, painting and drawing using various tools, including paint brushes, pencil, graphite pencil, chalk pastels, oil pastels and many others. Our goal this year was to introduce visual arts to the students and allow them to experience the use of the many drawing and painting tools. The music program in our school this year was limited due to the circumstances each school and district faced with the pandemic. However, the program used “Music and the Brain” with a few classes to introduce piano playing and musical theory to the children. Students were able to read, play piano and percussion instruments and exhibit their ability to make music and show their different personalities through expression. Hopefully as we move into the new school year of 2021-2022, students and teachers will not be as limited and will be able to express their talents through the arts more whether it be visual, musical and/or theatrical.

The Linden-Renaissance Middle School offers a rich foundation in the arts supported by Black Spectrum Theater, District 29 Visual Arts Grant and New York City Center Residency Education. All grade 6 students experience dance, drama, music and visual arts. Students audition in July for our three-year Dance Major Program, and they qualify for auditions for performing arts high schools. Our dancers also had the opportunity to perform for various District 29 organizations and functions. Our seventh graders focused on Video Production in our state-of-the-art recording studio, Advanced Dance, and Visual Arts. Our grade 8 students select the arts they are interested in studying. We support our arts programs by offering afterschool Band, Dance Club, Drama/Theater productions, and partnering with the Museum of the Moving Image, specializing in Cartooning and Animation. All afterschool programs are led by certified arts teachers. We are proud that our students have been accepted to performing arts and specialized arts high schools and programs.

PS 195 is committed to offering students a well-balanced arts education. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, our ability to implement our usual in-person programs and performances have been halted. We plan to restart our in-person instrumental music, step dance and modern dance programs for the 2021-2022 school year.
This year, the staff had to be creative and determined, so most arts programs were held virtually. We were able to continue our Step and dance programs virtually. In virtual music classes, students were introduced to singing, body percussion, and bucket drumming. Students also created original music and recorded vocal tracks using Soundtrap, an online professional recording studio. Younger students were also able to be creative online using Google's Song Maker and Shared Piano applications. The incredibox application introduced students to loops to create beatboxing songs.
In the visual arts, teachers partnered with the Future Arts Initiative to create social justice themed digital media blogs with both remote and in-person students. Students have a scheduled two hour Art Exhibit with FAI in June.
Classroom teachers were also committed to incorporating the arts into their curriculum using online resources like Art Hub and Google Drawings where students created digital mosaics.
Every Friday, the entire school has fun at Club 195, where all in-person and virtual students participate in virtual dance classes. Student performances are TBD.

PS/IS 208 has been partnering with Arts Connection for the past ten years. This year Arts Connection faciltated a virtual film residency during after school hours. We believe that the arts are an essential part of middle school education and have set aside time during after school hours to make this happen. In the past, our elective classes included Dance, Music, Art, and Film. We used the funding from an ELL/SWD (English Language Learners/Students With Disabilities) grant to broaden student choice during our electives and included Film, which taught our students how to create stop motion credit sequences and "love poem" animations. In the past few years, we've created a Musical Theater Program with the help of MTI (Music Theater International/Shubert Broadway Jr) Grant. This two-year program is designed to assist PS/IS 208 in developing a sustainable, quality theater program which engages our students in the joyful process of creating musical theater. It helps foster a strong educational community as students, staff, and families all "play a role" in the process and can also encourage the connection of arts programming to curriculum study in all content areas. Our students performed Fame Jr., Willy Wonka Kids, Shrek Jr., Hairspray Jr., and The Wiz. These performances allowed our students to tap into their creative side and express themselves in multiple ways. In addition to acting, singing and dancing, the students created the set design and were in charge of cueing the music for the performances. Arts in schools helps shape lives!

The Institute for Health Professions at Cambria Heights offers both Visual Arts and Music courses. In Art, students examine both health and social issues from current events to create works to bring awareness of these issues to the attention of the public. Through real world applicable projects we create videos, comics, brochures, board games, and street art along with classical artistic skills such as drawing from observation. In Music, our students examine the fundamentals of Music Theory while relating them to their favorite songs. Utilizing these skills, students embark on learning how to play the piano while composing their own original songs. The Institute offers avenues for the study of Art through our English, Science, Social Studies and Mathematics classes at each grade level through our interdisciplinary approach. From using Art and Engineering to craft their own designed objects in Physics; to building representation of bridges in Geometry, students are exposed to a variety of art forms. Artistic expression is also available to students through a variety of clubs, including Art, Photography, a Dance team, and a Step team.

Pathways College Preparatory School is a 6-12 school that offers students in every grade a choice between dance and music arts' electives. Middle school classes meet four times a week. High school classes are mixed grade level and meet anywhere from two to five times a week. The arts program is performance-based, with two large concert venues each year. About five to six other, smaller performances also happen every year. The support for the arts program is very strong within the student body and community. Dance instruction focuses on building technique and student-written choreography. Music instruction varies by grade: 6th and 7th graders form the middle school choir; 8th grade is a percussion ensemble; 9-12th grades are different conglomerations of Modern Band; there is also a select band for advanced high school students.

This year, all classes were virtual, and we had a giant school performance encompassing all arts students that was streamed on YouTube Premiere.

At Excelsior Preparatory High School we believe that a rich arts program with a strong studio and performance component is essential to the academic growth of our students. One of our goals is to provide each student with a great overall art experience. All bands are proud to play in our school's various assemblies, concerts and contests throughout the year. Our Concert Band has also performed along with the Five Towns College Concert Band. We are very excited to see the growth of the arts over the last few years, and will continue to strive for growth. Currently we offer Studio Art, Mixed Media, and newly added AP 2D Art and Design to our Visual Arts Program and Concert and Advanced Band for our Music Program. We are hoping to add more digital platforms for art making next year.

The arts continue to be an integral part of Public School/Intermediate School 268 curriculum, even as we work through unprecedented times. We strive to fully realize the goals and objectives of the Blueprint for the Arts and enrich the academic program. We meaningfully integrate the arts into all curriculum areas to enhance learning. To increase equity across the school, every class was exposed to at least two of the three art forms we offer. Visual arts students were able to take virtual museum tours, and music students learned different styles of music through Carnegie Hall’s Musical Explorers program. Fourth and Fifth grade students learned to express themselves better through movement in the Ballroom Basix program. Middle school students were encouraged to create portfolios and prepare for auditions if they are applying to a specialized art school. We plan to reinstate our drama, modern band, and talent choice programs in the coming year.

George Washington Carver High School for the Sciences is a small high school with an emphasis on Science Research and Veterinary Science Education. Students are enrolled in the arts so that they can gain an overview, exposure and appreciation to the arts, specifically Visual Arts. We have continuous art exhibitions throughout the year. Students' work is proudly displayed on the second floor near the library and throughout our school community. We are currently exhibiting student artworks spanning 100 linear feet for all to view and admire. The Arts Program is designed to provide students with an overview of the various forms of the arts while affording them the opportunity to develop an appreciation and acquire rudimentary skills in Visual Art. Students are exposed to a wide variety of artists and materials. Through cross-curricular based projects, students are able to integrate and apply the skills and techniques learned to demonstrate their understanding of visual arts.
Q43 1
In science there is a constant need for understanding of scientific diagrams of animals as well as the earths systems and geography. The arts will further strengthen these concepts of the visual side to science, bridging the gap between creativity and the core subjects.

The Preparatory Academy for Writers offers Theater Arts, Music Production, Dance and Audio/Video Production classes to both high school and middle school students. An Audio Club, a Production Club and an Acting group are open to all students. Additionally, we have talent shows twice a year. We have a Moving Image/Video Production program which allows students to collaboratively create short films and participate in all aspects of the production process, from pre-production planning to post-production editing. Student films are screened and shared with the school as part of a showcase. Additionally, students have dance classes and music production classes. Scholars are given the opportunity to perform and participate in a culminating performance project during school wide events.

Our school continues to participate in the arts partnership between District 29 and the Guggenheim Museum. Through this partnership, professional development is provided to the school's social studies teachers. A teaching artist has also visited the school to further support the social studies teachers. In addition, our school started a 9-week arts residency with Arts Horizons this year. One in-person teaching artist worked with our in-person students. Two remote teaching artists worked with our remote students.

At Cambria Heights Academy we believe in offering all our students multiple opportunities to engage in the arts. We offer a rigorous graphic design sequence where participating students are able to earn 3 credits from SUNY Farmingdale. Most of our course offerings are digital, such as, music production, film production, and photography. We also offer chorus, intro to music, and drawing electives.
Q43 1
Additionally, we have a CTE program dedicated to software engineering. We approach our CTE work from a design standpoint and all students learn about the fundamentals of game and web design through their CTE coursework.

At Mathematics, Science Research and Technology High School, the Arts Program has been integrated into the core curriculum. Teachers are planning integrated lessons with our art, dance and music teachers. Students are exposed to different forms of arts such as Dance, Music, Visual Art and Theater. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic students were not able to attend in person performances therefore our arts department created virtual performances in celebration of various holidays and events such as African American Heritage and woman's history month. Through these virtual experiences, students were still able to make connections with the socio-cultural and historical significance of theater and all the aspects of the arts including film and editing. This year, Mathematics, Science Research and Technology High School’s goals are to continue to integrate the arts into all content areas and create partnerships with various arts organizations to enrich the culture of our students so that students are able to express themselves through the arts and build their skills and knowledge in a variety of forms, therefore enriching our learning community.

Our incoming 9th grade students experience Dance, Visual Arts, and Cosmetology, in their freshmen year. They are welcomed to decide a major in freshmen year where they then pursue a sequence in that major that culminates in taking the NYC Arts-Endorsed Diploma or NYS Licensing Exam for that selected arts major.

Despite the unforeseen circumstances this year, we maintained our goal for the Arts Programs at Public School 2Q to create opportunities for students to: recognize the social, cultural, and historical significance of art, and connect the arts to other disciplines. In order to do this, students must be taught to refine their observation, develop problem-solving skills, build a more extensive visual vocabulary, read and write about art to reinforce literacy skills and interpret the arts through discussion. This is achieved through a differentiated and multi-sensory approach to learning. Not only do our classroom teachers teach various art forms throughout the year in content areas, but we are also fortunate enough to have community-based arts partnerships as well. Another goal at Public School 2Q is to continue the current partnerships, to expand the programs offered to include more students, and to add more variety to the programs offered. We were very grateful to provide multiple programs to our students this year, including Visual Arts instruction and an after school drama/theater program, and hope to add music and dance next year. Through these partnerships, we hope to offer students exposure to a variety of art forms and media through weekly sessions with resident artists, field trips and school art projects- we strive for our students to become lifelong learners and advocates for the arts.
