PS 69Q, “The School of Cultural and Performing Arts” has a robust and rigorous arts program even in a pandemic. Our students, both virtual and in-person, are engaged in multiple arts and enrichment activities that reflect our diverse and multicultural school community. Our arts partner, City Lore brought direct arts instruction through residencies in theater, poetry, dance, music and visual arts to our students in Grades 1-5 while focusing on this year’s magnet theme of Africa and for next year, The Americas. CASA grants afforded students in Grades 1-3 instruction in traditional Korean, Chinese, Indian dance and culture, as well as musical theater for Grade 4 & 5 students, in after-school programs. A Cultural Immigrant Initiative grant from the NYC Council allowed residencies focusing on Irish, South African and American percussive dance. We offered afterschool music programing in band and string instruments in Grades 4 and 5. Residencies and music programs are celebrated, with our students and entire school community, through virtual and in-person performances all year long. We are a SEM school engaging in enrichment opportunities through magnet enrichment clusters in Grade 2. We will continue our rich, successful cultural arts partnerships with City Lore, JALC, Dancing Classrooms, Flushing Town Hall, Inside Broadway and Irish Arts Center. At PS 69Q, we believe that arts experiences and arts education are essential to educating the whole student to reach their full potential

At P.S. 69Q, we strive for an instructionally focused learning environment emphasizing our multicultural and diverse background of 864 students who have 21 different home languages and cultures. We are "The School of Cultural and Performing Arts" and endeavor to offer as many arts experiences to our students as possible. We believe that the arts play a vital role in the development of our students not just academically but in their social and emotional growth as well. All students are encouraged to be meaningfully and thoughtfully engaged in academic, artistic, collaborative and socially conscious tasks where every student is accepted and honored for their accomplishments, potential and individuality. We annually rotate our magnet theme between Asia, Africa and the Americas, integrating these themes throughout our arts curriculum, residency programs, cultural events, multiple school music celebrations and performances while making connections to our students own varied unique cultural experiences. We embrace all opportunities to collaborate with a variety of arts partners that are brought into our school through federal and state grants, the public sector, NYC DOE approved arts partners along with the families and friends of our students and community.
