It remains our goal at PS373R to provide a comprehensive arts curriculum, aligned with the CCLS, the NYCDOE Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and the Danielson Framework for Teaching. Through the arts, we seek to address the varied learning modalities of our special needs students, in both standardized and alternate assessment, while making powerful and deep interconnections across the content areas that build a strong academic foundation and support the students' attainment of their IEP goals. Recognizing the power of the arts to advance our students' emotional and social growth, as well as their academic growth, we continue to support Emotional Literacy in and through the various arts disciplines. To this end, we continuously strive to expand the reach of our programs, to partner with cultural organizations, and to elevate the rigor of our arts instruction through collaborative teaching, cohorts and professional development. With an increasingly aggressive approach to grant writing, we continually seek out resources and opportunities for our students, regardless of remote or in-person format. Through the arts, our children not only learn and grow, they flourish.

This year, we like all schools across our city faced the challenges of frequent classroom and building closures, students opting in, out and then back in to in-person learning, and a lack of personal arts supplies and materials to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination in class or lack of supplies at home. Additionally, all of our art teachers at the elementary level were reassigned to teach core content primarily, with the arts as a secondary supplementary subject, due to a shortage of staffing both in person and remote. This reassignment was put into STARS in this way and caused our teachers to miss out on studio allocations that had been pulled in the Spring of 2020 and reinstated this year. Despite this, teachers continued to use the arts to teach the children Social Studies and Science, while addressing the content curriculum. Several grants were applied for which enabled the creation of individual portable art kits for home and school, which facilitated learning to an extent. Cultural partners delivered performances and instruction via ZOOM and Google Classroom, enabling students to participate whether at home or in school, and across our 8 co-locations. While virtual learning is not the preferred for our students, it did greatly expand the scope and reach of participation.
