PS 106 has rooms, supplies and teachers dedicated to music, theater and visual arts. Students are taught arts based on National Core Arts Standards and NYC’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning the Arts. We, at PS 106, believe that the arts support academic growth, equips students with various ways to express themselves, and builds confidence, all while opening doors to culture and history. Our students have competed in ballroom dance, created art with the Park Avenue Armory and, each year, students and teachers proudly work in collaboration with the school community, to produce a performance. Students act, sing, dance, create sets, work lighting, sound and stage. Students do what they didn’t know they could do using artistic expression, professionalism and camaraderie.
This was not a normal school year. Despite not having an art program this year, teachers at PS 106 worked to incorporate the arts into their curriculum, whether it was learning history through cultural music and dance, acting out a play in reading group, or devoting time to guided drawing lessons. Many teachers found new ways to connect with their students through the arts. Some connecting by discussing art on a virtual museum tour, others by creating art together from a YouTube video. While we anticipate a return to our arts program with much hope in the coming school year, we at PS 106 will carry this experience with us and remember the true value of the arts and its influence on how our students learn.
