He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants, for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places and unreasonable noise. He also was a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the fifth anniversary of his passing.

This program will be accessible to people with disabilities.

The ancient sport of archery is an activity just about anyone can participate in. Archery helps to improve your concentration and develop your mental discipline. Like any new skill, archery requires practice and patience to master. Urban Park Ranger-led archery programs sharpen these skills while connecting you with nature by getting you outdoors. Archery is also a great way to build upper body strength and to stay fit! Our trained Rangers will demonstrate the safe and proper way to draw a bow, shoot an arrow, and focus on the target. Discover Archery for yourself and learn to hit your mark!

Families and children, ages 8 years and older, are welcome to participate in our archery programs. Programs are first-come, first-served. Participation in a mandatory safety review led by a trained Ranger is required. All equipment is provided and personal archery equipment is not allowed.

Description

Closely Knit: A Textile Analysis of Animals by Ruth Marshall brings attention to illegal wildlife trade and species loss in a way that unites a widened audience of scientists, art enthusiasts and the general public. Her life-size, knitted textile pelts of tigers, leopards, coral snakes and Australian marsupials exemplify how artisan goods have the potential to have higher commercial value than poached skins on the black market. Her textiles reinforce the ideology that support for conservation and culture is a more sustainable, viable and lucrative endeavor than the illegal wildlife trade.

She has conducted research at the American Museum of Natural History, Melbourne Museum and the Berlin Zoo. For Closely Knit, Marshall studied Askai, Central Park Zoo’s six-year-old male snow leopard and created a new knitted work based on his distinctive coat. The exhibition is staged in the historic Arsenal building, which housed a menagerie of gifted animals on the basement level from 1859 to 1871, and was the first home of the American Museum of Natural History from 1869 to 1877 before it moved to its current home on Manhattan’s West Side.
