Description

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

For more information visit www.nyc.gov/parks/art.

Description

Mariella Bisson’s large-scale, mixed media paintings of picturesque waterfalls in upstate New York are coupled with her preparatory drawings and watercolors in Sunlight, Water and Gravity. Her paintings, created with hundreds of pieces of layered paper, teeter on the edge of abstraction and representation. The overlapping paper replicates the texture of rushing water and rock strata. Motion, gravity, and the endlessness of geological time are as much the subject of Bisson’s paintings as the actual waterfalls.

Description

In the spring of 1843, the year he turned 26, Henry David Thoreau moved to Staten Island, hoping to advance his literary career in the big city. By December he was back home in Concord.

Thoreau visited New York City half a dozen times in his life: to sell pencils, to sell cranberries, to lecture, to work as a surveyor, and to meet people like Walt Whitman, Horace Greeley, and Lucretia Mott. But what did New York mean to him? And what might he think about New York today?

This lively discussion will be moderated by Geoff Wisner, editor of Thoreau’s Animals and Thoreau’s Wildflowers. Panelists include Audrey Raden, author of When I Came to Die: Process and Prophecy in Thoreau’s Vision of Dying, Damion Searls, editor of the NYRB Classics one-volume edition of Thoreau’s Journal, and Robert Sullivan, author of The Thoreau You Don’t Know.
