Cinderella Samba is a contemporary twist on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. The CityParks PuppetMobile production sets the timeless tale in the lush landscape of Brazil, where, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella attends Rio de Janeiro’s biggest Carnival gala and dances the samba with Prince Paulo himself. After Cinderella is forced to flee the gala just before midnight, the prince sets out to find the mystery woman who stole his heart, in hopes of marrying her.

The lively production features an original commissioned musical soundtrack that brings samba center-stage; handcrafted Carnival festival floats on parade; and one-of-a-kind marionettes donning their most vibrant Carnival costumes, created by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park.

Hallett Nature Sanctuary is the smallest of the park's three woodland landscapes. Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance.
White-tail deer are herbivores, which means they eat plants. While there are no plant species that are truly deer-proof, deer do develop preferences and will ignore many types of plants in their grazing patterns. Planting with a high diversity of plant species will minimize the impact that any deer will have in your garden.

The gardens around the Conference House Visitors' Center feature plants that deer are less likely to eat. See which plants may work for your home!

WildlifeNYC is a campaign launched by the City of New York to increase public awareness about urban wildlife, and how humans can live harmoniously with the animals who also call the Big Apple home.

End Time

Location Description
The event is being held at The Carson Family Auditorium. (Enter the campus at 66th Street and York Avenue)
Description

This discussion will focus on ways in which soils in urban areas are different from soils in less densely-populated areas. What do we know about NYC soils based on the latest research? What are some of the broader implications of that research for human health, environmental remediation, urban agriculture, and forest restoration?

This conversation is important in an urban context because soil research typically takes place in non-urban areas. Urban soils are under unique pressures due to exposure to pollution and development. Studying urban soils can provide insight into how ecological communities persist and function under these pressures and other disturbances.

Because soil research is often done in non-urban settings, the preexisting data in field can’t be used to make assumptions or answer questions about urban soils. We hope this panel will engender a conversation to identify gaps in research, prioritizing which questions need to be addressed and providing insight for better land management practices.

Moderated by: Novem Auyeung, NYC Parks

Panel Hosted by: Dr. Sean Brady of Rockefeller University's Brady Lab

Panelists:

Zach Charlop-Powers, Rockefeller University

Krista McGuire, Barnard College, Columbia University

Tatiana Morin, Urban Soils Institute

Clara Pregitzer, Natural Areas Conservancy

Troy Hill, Environmental Protection Agency

Rich Shaw, United States Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Conservation Services

*Please bring an ID and print a copy of your ticket

Please contact Zach Charles Powers (718) 644-5053 for information on venue accessibility.

Description

The Bronx and La Villette are two very similar areas in the cities of New York City and Paris. Considered for a long time as dangerous areas, they are becoming very fashionable neighborhoods, where artists and families live. Their configuration has changed so much that now the two neighborhoods are literally the opposite of what they used to be.

The aim of the project The Bronx - La Villette is to give value to the work that has gone into these areas, in spite of the misconceptions people may have about them, and to highlight the diversity of these neighborhoods by showing everyday people from a local’s perspective.

Matteo Pellegrinuzzi is a photographer/cinematographer. He has been living in Paris for the past ten years, working between Paris and Italy on social issues. He studied the History of Cinema at the University of Pavia in Italy. Mr. Pellegrinuzzi has contributed to the making of many movies as a camera man and cinematographer since 2005, but photography is still his first love. His visit to the Bronx inspired this exhibition.
