Athens in Manhattan: The Role of Greek Revival Architecture in Early New York City

2018-07-25T00:00:00.000

18:00

20:00

America turns 242 this year, and even if we start counting from the arrival of the Dutch in 1642, New York City is less than 400 years old — a baby by global standards!

As a burgeoning metropolis in a young republic, 19th-century New York sought to strengthen its position in the world by connecting itself to history—especially Ancient Greece, regarded as the birthplace of democracy. From these efforts, the Greek Revival style of architecture was born, linking New York to the glorious “Golden Age” of Athens in the 5th century BCE.

Join us for a walking tour focused on Greek Revival architecture in the neighborhood of the 1832 Merchant’s House Museum, itself an example of this powerfully symbolic style. Along the way, we’ll learn about the specific features of Greek Revival and compare the realities of Ancient Greek civilization with the ideal presented in 19th-century America. Enjoy Greek nibbles in the garden.

5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. – Walking tour #1
6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. – Reception in the garden of the Merchant’s House Museum
7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Walking tour #2

Co-sponsored by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.

Please note: Reservations required. Shakespeare in the Park: Much Ado About Nothing

2014-06-04T00:00:00.000

20:00

21:00

Hamish Linklater and Tony® nominee Lily Rabe return to the Park this summer as the wise-cracking, would-be lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the beloved romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Central Park becomes sun-drenched Sicily at the turn of the last century, where the heat of summer ignites the fevered passions of lovesick ladies in corsets and pining gentlemen spying from the verandah. Three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien directs this delightful skirmish of wit between two self-declared bachelors tricked by their mischief-making friends into falling in love against their will and in spite of their own hearts.

New York's most treasured summer tradition, Free Shakespeare in the Park, celebrates its 52nd season in Central Park's famous Delacorte Theater. Love and madness, laughter and tragedy combine for a uniquely thrilling season of exciting theater and exceptional performances under the stars. Join over 5 million people who have enjoyed The Public Theater's free performances and experience the heights of romance and the depths of duplicity in a setting unlike any other, in the heart of Manhattan.
Free tickets to the 2014 season will once again be distributed in the Park, online via the Virtual Ticketing Lottery, and in the five boroughs of New York City. For more info on getting tickets, visit the Shakespeare in the Park tickets page.

Capturing the Bronx Exhibition

2018-06-13T00:00:00.000

09:00

17:00

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.
