Rockaway Beach Groin Removal

The proposed project consists of the removal of three deteriorated timber groins from Rockaway Beach between Beach 32 and Beach 35 Streets, which will restore public beachfront and enable ocean-going recreation, while addressing a public safety hazard. The groins were installed decades ago to mimic the effect of rock jetties and prevent beach erosion. They havent been maintained and are severely deteriorated. They are also often submerged during high tide and pose a hazard to bathers and surfers, particularly in their deteriorated condition. In 2010, a 28-year-old died after his surfboard ankle leash became tangled in the pilings, leaving him submerged for minutes before rescuers could get to him. This followed a similar death the previous year. In addition to the above, each year, NYCDPR receives reports of myriad cuts and scrapes on the groins. In order to eliminate this hazard, the project will remove and dispose of the three groins in their entirety and replace the displaced sand to restore beach shoreline characteristics.
