Safety Improvemenst on Riverside Drive from West 116th to West 135th Streets

DOT is proposing improvements to enhance the safety of all street users (i.e., pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and motorists) in an area bounded by West 135th Street to the north and West 116th Street to the south on Riverside Drive in the Morningside and Hamilton Heights sections of Manhattan Community Board 9. The improvements include new bicycle friendly facilities, concrete and painted curb extensions, median tip extensions delineating pedestrian crossing spaces and new sidewalk construction to provide safe access to Grants Tomb. The number of southbound travel lanes will be reduced from two to one starting just south of West 134th Street, and will flare back to two lanes at the northbound to southbound loop near Tiemann Place. The number of northbound travel lanes will not be reduced; two lanes will be maintained throughout. The proposed action has been approved by Community Board 9 and the Build year is 2016. In order to assess the effects of the proposed lane transition, a traffic assessment was performed using the Synchro/SimTraffic software for the weekday AM and PM peak hours. It was determined that the proposal would not create any significant traffic impacts.
