Marine Park Forest and Wetland Restoration

The proposed project area is located on the northwestern side of Marine Park in Brooklyn, NY. Marine Park is designated as a Forever Wild Nature Preserve by NYC Parks. The project site currently proposed for management consists of approximately 36.6 acres of unrestored wetlands and herbaceous understory, much of it invasive. The existing forest habitat has been significantly impacted by decades of dumping, homeless encampments, and soil and trash degradation from recent extreme storm events, such as Hurricane Sandy. The objective of the proposed work at Marine Park is to improve and restore the health and resiliency of the coastal upland forest and tidal and freshwater wetland ecosystems through planting native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species. The goal is to mitigate invasive plant species to the degree that native plant species can grow to dominate the landscape.

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) with the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) proposes to acquire approximately 119,560 square feet (sf) of space in a 48,152 sf parcel and building at 207 East 127th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in Manhattan to house the Manhattan District 11 Garage, the Manhattan Lot Cleaning Unit (LCU), and the LCU Headquarters. The MN District Garage would relocate from its current leased facility at 343 East 99th Street, which is structurally unsound, undersized, and a nonconforming use in an R7A Residence district. Staff from the LCU Headquarters and Manhattan LCU office would relocate from their leased location at 177 East 123rd Street; most of the assigned LCU vehicles would not relocate. The Project Site is in the East Harlem Area of Manhattan. The facility would store and maintain DSNY vehicles providing refuse collection, recycling and winter emergency srvices to Manhattan Community Ditrict 11.
