Project Description
DEP proposes to construct the Dutch Kills Aeration and Borden Avenue Pump Station Upgrade project (CSO-NC-4). The Borden Avenue Pump Station was constructed in the 1950s and equipment was upgraded in 1985. The pump station must be upgraded to maintain a state of good repair. Upgrades to the pump station include: the installation of new submersible main sewage pumps, the conversion of the existing dry well into a wet well, new hatches, monorails and hoists, as well as new electrical and control equipment. An existing, below grade force main will also be re-routed in order to keep it from falling beneath the expanded footprint of the new building. The aeration system will be an entirely new installation and operation. The blower building for the aeration system is housed under the same roof as the pump station but in a separate room. The aeration system would contain three positive displacement blowers installed in a blower building; two blowers would be active (one each would produce air to aerate Dutch Kills and portions of Newtown Creek) and the third blower would be a standby backup for either segment. With the addition of the blower building and pump station upgrades, the finished facility will have a total footprint of approximately 2,750 square feet. The Dutch Kills aeration line will tee-off into two pipes, one distributing air north for approximately 1,350 feet, and one distributing air southwest for approximately 1,350 feet. The Dutch Kills aeration system includes approximately 440 diffusers distributing 3,600 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM). The Newtown Creek aeration line will enter Dutch Kills and wrap around the southeast bend to enter Newtown Creek. This line includes approximately 5,900 linear feet of pipe, with the diffusers starting at about 3,400 feet. The Newtown Creek aeration system includes approximately 440 diffusers distributing approximately 3,100 SCFM.
