The pilot will help evaluate the feasibility of adding food waste to DSNY's recycling efforts.

Howard Beach Pumping Station Upgrade

The proposed project would include the upgrade of the existing Howard Beach Pumping Station (PS), the rehabilitation of the existing Force Main (FM) that connects to the PS, and the construction of a new parallel FM, located in the Howard Beach neighborhood of Queens, in Community District 10. The existing pumping station is located on the southeast corner of 155th Avenue and 99th street (Block 14143, Lot 54) and is configured as a dry well/wet well-type station with five dry-pit submersible pumps that serves the Howard Beach PS drainage area. While there has not been a history of flooding or backups at the station, there have been times when all five pumps have been in operation, leaving no redundancy. As such, the proposed project would include the installation of a new 48-inch FM that would become the primary station discharge, with the existing 42-inch FM serving as a redundant backup line to be used only in an emergency or during maintenance of the proposed FM. The proposed project would also include upgrades to the Howard Beach PS and the rehabilitation of the existing FM.
