The existing bridge roadway geometry consists of three eastbound lanes, of which two have metered parking and sidewalks on each side, and the center lane is for traffic on West 44th Street. The bridge is a two-span continuous steel multi-girder system with a 4,300 square foot deck area which carries utilities such as electricity, water and gas systems. The corrective rehabilitation of defective or deteriorated bridge structure components will include the removal, replacement and/or repair of:  Loose and deteriorated concrete encasement at diaphragms and fascia;  Vertical and horizontal cracks at abutments/ columns/ crash walls;  Encasement at bearings;  Loose and deteriorated concrete at underside of deck and at utilities support box;  Non-standard railing/parapet and replace as per current standards;  Deteriorated concrete sections at sidewalk;  Deck wearing surface. and install waterproofing; and  Droken lighting fixtures and junction boxes. In addition, the bridge deck will be waterproofed. During the bridge rehabilitation, traffic will be maintained at all times.

NYCDOT is proposing a complete street redesign of Ninth Avenue from West 33rd Street to Columbus Circle in Manhattan Community District 4. The redesign segment of Ninth Avenue has been identified a High Crash Corridor. In addition, Ninth Avenue between West 33rd and West 59th Street is within the Midtown West Senior Area. The proposed redesign will allow for safer pedestrian crossings, fewer turning conflicts, improved access and circulation for cyclists, and enhanced safety for all street users. The street redesign includes the installation of landscaped pedestrian refuge islands, floating parking, left-turn bays, and a parking-protected bicycle lane with mixing zones while maintaining the same number of existing travel lanes. A complete street design was previously implemented on Ninth Avenue from West 23rd to West 32nd Streets. The project is expected to be completed in 2012.
