Project Description
Project Background: The Bushkill Bridge carries NYC Route 28A over the Bushkill Creek and Dry Brook in the Town of Olive, NY. During the flooding, the path of flow of Dry Brook Stream was changed, which resulted in a washout occurring at the north western bridge approach. The washout included the loss of the approximately 100 feet of roadway for one lane width, along with the subbase material and embankment below the approach. An immediate repair was made by placing medium stone (NYSDOT Item 620.04 Stone Filling (Medium)) in the washed out area to prevent further scour of the roadway embankment. In order to complete the immediate repair, subbase material and a concrete barrier were placed to complete temporary roadway surface and guiderail repairs. Additionally, during the storm, Pier 4 of the bridge lost some of the scour protection provided around the pier. Dry Brook Stream undercut the northern approach lane causing the collapse of the road lane. Bushkill Creek is classified as A(T) stream and Dry Brook is a Class A(Ts) stream Project Description: The proposed permanent repairs at the Bushkill Bridge involve the northwestern approach and Pier 4, and additional stream stabilization measures. The proposed work includes new pavement, striping, guiderail, placement of slope stabilization material, and permanent scour remediation material at the toe of the roadway embankment. Pier 4 would receive additional scour protection measures. The proposed work includes additional scour protection for the abutment and wingwall footings, installation of cofferdams, temporary erosion and sediment control measures and the installation of temporary construction access roads as necessary. Debris would be removed from the stream channel upstream of the bridge and a majority of this material would be used, along with large stone and rip-rap, to stabilize the banks of Dry Brook. Cobbles that were deposited within Bushkill Creek would be excavated and placed behind the bank stabilization along Dry Brook. A number of sediment and erosion controls would be put in place to minimize stream disturbances. Rip rap would be placed at the abutment of Pier 4 stream interfaces. Silt fencing would be placed along down slope of disturbed areas a turbidity curtain would be placed at the reservoir water line. For the stream restoration work, a stabilized construction entrance and staging area would be in place and silt fencing would be placed. There would be two temporary stream crossings, and water way diversions would be created if necessary. The proposed work is estimated to take approximately three months.
