Project Description
The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) proposes to acquire approximately 9.8 acres to construct a 93,775 gross square foot (gsf) garage building at 31-11 20th Avenue in Astoria, Queens to store and maintain its Queens District 1 vehicles and other equipment, provide fueling and employee support areas such as locker rooms, lavatories, and offices. Collection truck and plow attachment storage and accessory parking wiil be unenclosed. The current 36,900 sf Queens 1 Garage at 34-28 21st Street in Astoria is undersized, structurally deficient, and does not conform to the residential (R5) zoning. DSNY has had to store trucks on residential streets, resulting in community complaints and DSNY use of an offsite parcel temporarily to store equipment. The proposed garage and salt shed relocations will enable DSNY to continue serving Queens Community District 1 with refuse and recycling collection, street cleaning, and winter emergency operations. The project involves use of a shared private access drive from 19th Avenue that will traverse Block 826 lot 42, and a utility easement to 20th Avenue. A 20,000 sf salt shed is also proposed on the site to replace the unenclosed Queens District 1 Salt Facility (10,000 ton capacity) on the waterfront at 43rd Avenue and Vernon Boulevard.
