Tower Mountain Forest Management Project

DEP proposes to undertake a forest management project in the Town of Tompkins, Delaware County, New York. The project would harvest three distinct patches of damage by high winds and forest tent caterpillar defoliation (worm kill). By implementing the project at this time, the white ash component of the forest can be utilized and the value captured prior to infestation by Emerald ash borer. The forest in this location is primarily composed of white ash, black cherry, sugar maple, and small quantities of other species. The proposed harvest will remove approximately 21,000 board feet of standing timber and approximately an equal quantity of blowdown. The species composition of timber to be removed is 48 percent white ash, 47 percent black cherry and 5 percent sugar maple. As discussed above, the harvest area would occupy three areas of size 1.3, 3.3, and 4.5 acres for a total acreage of 9.1 acres. The area would be accessed by existing skid trails and roads.
