Project Description
DOT is proposing a 14-mile Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway (BWG), consisting of off- and on-street walking and bicycle-facilities connecting the neighborhood waterfront starting at Greenpoint and ending at Sunset Park in Brooklyn. The Sunset Park section of the BWG is divided into the Gowanus Connector/Hamilton Avenue, the Sunset Park North and the Bush Terminal/Sunset Park South segments. Currently, southbound Hamilton Avenue north of 17th Street carries four moving lanes with no curbside parking. Approaching 17th Street, Hamilton Avenue provides an exclusive left-turn lane, a shared left-through lane and two through lanes. While one of the three travel lanes drops between 17th and 18th Streets, it becomes three lanes south of 18th Street where a fourth lane from 3rd Avenue is added which continues until 21st Street. South of 21st Street, Hamilton Avenue again reduces to three travel lanes with parking along the west curb. The abrupt drop of curbside travel lane at 21st Street creates unsafe merging. The proposed action (attached) would introduce a consistency along the Hamilton Avenue/3rd Avenue corridor by providing three moving lanes for the most part except the segment between 17th and 18th Streets where the existing two moving lanes would be maintained. A two-way 10-foot wide on-street bicycle facility would be provided along the west side of the roadway between Smith and 29th Streets, with buffer and/or flexible delineators between the travel and bike lanes. In addition, curb extensions and other geometric improvements will be implemented to enhance safety for all street users (i.e., pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists). The Build year is 2016.
