Project Description
The Jamaica Bay Park Salt Marsh and Forest Restoration Project proposes ecological and public access improvements to salt marsh and forested areas within Jamaica Bay Park in Bayswater, Queens. The project will involve four main components: building removal, wetland restoration and enhancement, upland restoration and enhancement, and public trail creation. The project will include removal of an existing single story home, enhancement of the existing wetland, cleanup of unvegetated / wrack-covered areas, and Phragmites treatment, in the remainder of the park. Work in these areas would include debris removal, the removal of invasive plant species, as well as seeding and planting of native low marsh and high marsh species. Upland restoration and enhancement is planned over an area of approximately 7.1 acres. Provision for public access will be created through the upland area of the park in the form of a new, approximately 2,200 foot long blazed natural surface trail. This newly constructed trail at Jamaica Bay Park is planned to link to an existing trail at the adjacent New York State owned Bayswater Point State Park, which will be improved as a separate project and permitted separately.
