Harlem Meer Pool and Rink Reconstruction and Site Restoration
Project Description
The Applicant, Central Park Conservancy, is proposing a two-phased comprehensive redevelopment of the Lasker Pool and Rink facility, and improvement to shoreline of the Harlem Meer, a manmade waterbody at the northeast corner of Central Park. The Proposed Project would be completed in two phases. Phase I would replace Lasker Pool and Rink with a new facility integrated into the topography of the site, and would re-establish the surface connection between the Meer and the Locha waterbody in the Ravine that historically emptied into the Meer until the flow was disrupted by the construction of the Lasker facility in the 1960s. Phase I would also naturalize the shoreline adjacent to the facility and develop a boardwalk and pergola on the upland portion of the Meer edge. The pergola and boardwalk would extend along the south shoreline to facilitate access to nature-based recreation. Phase II would consist of additional removal of the retaining wall and fill material along the south shoreline and an extension of the boardwalk installed as part of Phase I, expansion of the Meer footprint and naturalization of the north shoreline, and the replacement of invasive plant materials with sustainable emergent aquatic plantings on the east and west shorelines.
