Northern Bronx Native Riparian Restoration Project

The Northern Bronx Native Riparian Restoration Project, in the three miles of river adjoining Muskrat Cove and Bronx Park, provides a comprehensive plan to renaturalize the area through riparian and wetland restoration in the remaining untouched reaches of the Bronx River watershed. Without addressing the invasive species dominating this northern section, restored areas along the remaining five miles of river are jeopardized by reintroduction of extirpated species (e.g., Japanese knotweed, Reynoutria japonica) or colonization by new invasive species (e.g., Corydalis incisa). Reestablishing a well-functioning riparian buffer through invasive species removal and dense native riparian vegetation planting within this three-mile reach will prevent erosion, improve water quality, and increase wildlife habitat along the only freshwater river in NYC. The Project action area encompasses the upper three miles of the Bronx River corridor, focusing on three sites in particular: Site 1 in Muskrat Cove will include invasive species removal and native plant restoration; site 2 in Bronx Park will have invasive removal and native planting as well as a runoff raingarden using pollinator plants to take up stormwater; and site 3 in another section of Bronx Par will remove a broken staircase and path, remove trash, remove invasive species, and restore native plant communities on slope and native wetland species in the swamp forest at the bottom of the hill.
