HPD have developed python scripts a few years ago that download building data from NYC Open Data into our database.
It worked without any problems until recently. Now our script is unable to download one dataset out of three.

Hi Open Data team,

I've been working with this dataset recently and I have made a best effort to understand what certain columns mean, but I am ultimately lost. Hoping you can provide some context here. Specifically, I'm trying to figure out what each record in this dataset could represent and why it was included. When I look at the data dictionary, the answer to that question in the sheet 'Worksheet Information' simply says 'See data dictionary.'

The Data Dictionary isn't much help either. The name column suggests each record could be an asset or a facility, both of which are unclear. The domain and asset_class columns reference the Categorization table from facdb, but when I cross-reference them there, there's no information for thousands of the records provided, and that tab still doesn't even explain what any of these code values mean.

I'm trying to figure out really basic things about this dataset, like "does this row represent a wifi router, or an entire building?" but I don't even know where to look since the documentation is so unwieldy and circular. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as I'm trying to create a set of visualizations about how New Yorkers access the internet, and I think this dataset could be massively helpful for that if I can just figure out what's going on.

Hi,

For DOB NOW, is there a detailed breakdown of the proposed occupancy? The old DOB job filing dataset provided detailed proposed occupancy information, but DOB NOW only includes a column called "Building Type." I assumed these two were the same, but "Building Type" only lists categories such as 1-3 Family, Garage, Office, and Other.
I noticed that the proposed occupancy is visible when I manually look up the site on DOB NOW. Is there a place where this data is stored or accessible?

Please also note that the counter part to this data set "NYC Citywide Annualized Calendar Sales Update" contains coordinates and this one does not. The NYC Citywide Annualized Calendar Sales Update datasets all fields are text including the lat, lon which makes it quite impossible to query using the API.

Hi there, I am hoping to better understand the capacity of parking garages in New York City. I am hoping you could clarify what types of properties are included in the data set. It appears that this is more than just parking garages.

Only some of the lines mention "vehicle capacity" in the detail, and I see that some rows have "garage" for the industry. If I am hoping to see just parking garages, should I filter only rows for that are listed as "garage" for industry? What if I would like to see both surface lots and garages?

It seems like some of these are businesses such as food vendors that may operate on lots but are not using the lots for parking. Any insights you could give would be helpful!

Relatedly, do you know of any datasets that address average rates of utilization for garages? How full they tend to be? Thank you!

Thank you for contacting NYC Open Data on Automated Traffic Recorder dataset. Well-known text (WKT) represents coordinate reference systems in machine and human readable language. The dataset contains X, Y coordinates. You need a Geographic Information System (GIS) application to convert X,Y to Lat, Long coordinates such as ArcGIS or the open source QGIS.
1. Using ArcGIS- license required
Use the Calculate Geometry tool in the attribute table. More information about the tool on the ArcGIS website: https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/latest/manage...
1. Export data to CSV and format the WktGeom column (remove "POINT" and parentheses). Separate the X,Y into two columns (use the space as the break.)
2. Load the data into the application as a CSV, add two new columns in the attribute table (long, lat).
3. Use the Calculate Geometry tool in the attribute table (right click on the column header) to process the conversion. Fill in as follows:
a. Coordinates system of the data sources: NAD1983 State Plane New York Long Island FIPS 3104 Feet
b. Use coordinate system of the data frame: WGS 1984
c. Units: Decimal Degree
1. You may use ArcPy to convert the data into geometry, see information from ESRI below.

Good morning! I am a graduate student studying urban and social policy. I'm conducting research on exits from NYC's shelter system and am trying to access longitudinal data on this. 

The Local Law 79 dataset says that exit data is included, but I don't see it in the file or data dictionary. The city's Temporary Housing Report provides detailed exit information, but it's my understanding that historic reports are overwritten upon publication of the most recent report. Is there a way to access previous PDF versions of the Temporary Housing Report Or is the underlying data accessible on NYC Open Data, either via the Local Law 79 dataset or elsewhere? I am interested in accessing this data from 2022 onwards.

I would be very grateful for your insights on this! Please let me know if there is any additional information that I might provide to clarify my request.

Map used to display lines showing where streets are currently under protected status, and hovering over the line would give you specifics regarding protection start & end dates. Recently the data has not been populating. A colleague of mine submitted a ticket and was sent a link to a supposedly corrected map. However, that map only displayed points. So we cannot tell where the protection begins or ends. We can try to guess but there are many possibilities to the direction & extent the protection lines could possibly run.

Thank you for reaching out!

Excel does have limitations when handling large datasets, as it can only support up to 1,048,576 rows. Given the size of the dataset at the link you provided, we don’t recommend trying to download the entire dataset directly into Excel. Instead, we suggest filtering the data to around one million records or fewer per download to ensure compatibility with Excel.

Alternatively, downloading the data as a CSV file can be a more flexible option. However, please note that the full dataset in CSV format can be quite large, approximately 15.6 GB uncompressed. Even with a strong internet connection, download times can range from 20 to 50 minutes or longer, depending on factors like connection speed and server load. Also keep in mind that the export function waits for the data file to be whole and complete before showing up in your browsers download queue. on our end, we filtered the data to about 500,000 records and got a CSV to download in 3-5 minutes.

The Parks Inspections Program - Inspections dataset does have a PropID field which you can use to join to Parks Inspection Program – All Sites (MAPPED). The PropID field is cut off from the screenshot of the data diagram (which we’ve updated) in the data dictionary. Also, Seasons does appear in the Inspections dataset as well.

Also, in your inquiry you linked to the Parks Inspection Program – Inventory dataset. Did you have a specific question about that dataset?

I found that there may be some issues in the dataset, for example, when I selected the year 2021 and focused on data related to 'Pregnancy related', I found that when I set 'Underlying_comose' and 'Race/Eticity' to 'All', the total number of deaths related to 'Pregnancy related' was 30; When I set 'Underlying_cause' and 'Borough' to 'All', the total number of Deaths for 'Pregnant related' is also 30; But when I set 'Race/Eticity' and 'Borough' to 'All', the total number of deaths for 'Pregnant related' is 29, indicating that there may be some inconsistencies in the dataset.
