Inquiry
I am a data analysist for Jones Lang Lasalle and we have technicians operating in the NYC area who have received idling violations.
In an effort to be proactive and notify our technicians of new violations, I'm pulling data from the NYC Open Data OATH database. (OATH Hearings Division Case Status | NYC Open Data (cityofnewyork.us))
I'm filtering the data to our company and specifically idling violations.
I had a few questions around the NYC Open Data OATH and was hoping someone could help me. Below are my questions:
How long does it take for an idling violation to appear within the OATH NYC open data?
When looking at violations for idling, I'm seeing 5 fields that are charge/penalty fields, could someone help me understand how they total up?
Charge 1 Infraction amount
Additional Penalties or Late Fees
Penalty Imposed
Total Violation Amount
Balance Due
For example, summons number 000766944Y has the following values
Charge 1 Infraction amount = $350
Additional Penalties or Late Fees = $300
Penalty Imposed = $1,000
Total Violation Amount = $350
Balance Due = $1,300
I believe the Total Violation would be the sum total of charge 1 (or charge 2, 3 etc). Is this correct?
Assuming this is correct, Then the initial amount due would be $350. The "Additional Penalties or Late Fees" being $300, would now total up to $650.
Why is the "Penalty Imposed" at $1,000? And then the Balance Due = $1,300?
Wouldn't it be Total Violation Amount + Additional Penalties + Penalty Imposed = Balance Due?
Making this $350 + $300 + $1000 = $1650?
I'm just trying to understand the penalty and additional fee data from the NYC Open Data OATH data set so that we can account for the fees correctly.
My final question would be once a violation is paid; how long does it take to show "Paid" in the NYC Open Data OATH dataset?
Thank you for your help.

Assigned Agencys Response
Thank you for contacting the NYC Open Data Helpdesk. The total balance of $1,300 on Open Data is correct. The face amount of violation totaling $350 increased to $1,000 at default (based on the default penalty schedule) when the respondent did not show up for the hearing. Thereafter, there were late fees at 10% ($100) for each month in arrears, presumably for 3 months, which totaled $300. Therefore, the total balance due of $1,300 is the total of the default amount for $1,000 and the late fees of $300.
Thank you,
