E: This was closed without explanation - could someone please actually review and give me an answer? There's clearly an issue with the dataset or how the data was collected. If it's because of changes in practice within the NYPD, that is still important information. There's nearly a decade of data here that is unusable and the site should reflect that.

This dataset tracks hundreds of arrests on a daily basis except once you hit September 17, 2006, this changes to single digits. This trend continues until November 2017 where it goes back to hundreds.

This decade long gap of different reporting standards seems like either an error or a deliberate decision by the NYPD.

Does anyone have any insight on to why this dataset has this gap? I am trying to analyze it for research purposes and this is creating a problem for my research.

We are not able to see the issue you describe. For example, in 2006 and 2007 there were 371,934 and 403,231 records respectively. monthly trends can be seen the summary dashboard here:

Perhaps there is an issue with the file you downloaded, or in the tool in which you are doing your analysis.

What are the variables "vol_requests" and "hits"? Like what do they mean substantively? I assume "vol_requests" is the number of volunteers each charity requested, and "hits" is the number of time interested volunteers clicked on a link/contacted the charity, etc. More generally, is there somewhere I can go to see these sorts of definitions?

Hi, follow-up questions please. I've changed the name of the dataset url above, and my questions are:
1- is there a way to link this dataset with the NYPD_CallsForService file? Both have a CAD ID but they have different names (CAD_EVNT_ID and CAD _INCIDENT _ID, respectively) and don't appear to join records across the two files. Is there a column/field available that could join the two files?
2- in the EMS data dictionary, there is a field called 'atom' but it is not in the data file itself. Can an export of the file be provided to me that has this field added?
3- the EMS data dictionary file doesn't contain decodes for all the fields. I was specifically looking for defined values for atom and incident_dispatch_area. Can you provide these please?

Thank you for your inquiry. Once the individual is in the care of FDNY EMS, the NYPD closes the job. It is possible that FDNY EMS tracks the information about the destination hospital as part of their dispatch logs, but the NYPD does not.

he FELONY ASSAULTS (identified in the OFNS_DESC variable) in the NYPD Complaint Data Current Year-To-Date dataset were geocoded to the police precinct location rather than where the incident occurred. I think it is an error as in the NYPD Complaint Data Historic dataset the FELONY ASSAULTS are geocoded to the place where they happened. A similar issue is occurring with FELONY ASSAULTS in the NYPD Arrest Data Year-to-Date dataset as they were also geocoded at the nearest police precinct location.

Hopefully, the NYPD and NYC Open Data team can fix these issues as this dataset is commonly used for analyzing public safety trends in NYC. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.

I would like to locate the total number of parking violations and tows for the fiscal year 2021 and 2020. I have a pdf report from 2022 that details the total number for that year, but I'm having trouble locating the total number of citations for the years 2021 and 2020. My name is *****, and I am a Doctoral Candidate at *****. My research focus is on the commuting choices of public school students in the New York City , with a particular emphasis on the impact of crime on school choices and academic performance. I have been working with the NYCDOE for the past year on this project.

One aspect that I am studying is the potential effect of sexual violence on female students, specifically in regard to how it may influence their school choices and academic outcomes. In my analysis of the NYPD's historic complaint data, I have observed that there are only 78 unique locations for all reported rapes in NYC. Further examination of the data revealed that it is aggregated at the precinct level to protect individuals' privacy.

In order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of this issue, I am interested in obtaining data at a slightly lower level, specifically at the Census Tract level. This would provide more detailed information while still respecting privacy concerns. I am inquiring if this level of data is available and if it would be possible for me to access it for my research.

I am interested in using the DOMHM dataset for a spatial analysis project, but I am noticing that there is a lot of missing data for the latitude, longitude, zip code, address (street number, name, and zip code). Is there anything that could explain this missing data or is there a way to request the file with the full address data? Since this is 311 data, I expected for all the address information to be recorded like the other datasets, so I am unsure why there would be missingness. I would like to know more so that I can decide whether this is the best data to use for this study on the spatial relationship between housing complaints and neighborhood characteristics.

Some dbh measurements do not make sense. For example, the largest dbh is 425 inches (35 ft). By contrast, the largest dbh recorded in the 1995 census was 95 inches (about 8 ft.) Also, some species are recorded to have a dbh much larger than expected (e.g. a Japanese Zelkova with a dbh of 17 ft.) Should these weird dbh values be removed from the dataset, or have they been verified for accuracy? Thank you!

Hello, I am working on a research project that uses New York City's bicycle route data. I found some discrepancies/errors in the dataset and my question is which variable is more accurate -- facilitycl or allclasses? A bit of context here, "allclasses" is a variable that lists all facility where 2 or more classes are present on the same segment of the bike route and "facilitycl" shows the highest facility class found along a segment. Hence, in theory, "allclasses" should contain info about "facilitycl," but this is not true. For example, for the data point with "FID" = 8743 and "segmentid" = 148078 in year 2021, "allclasses" is II, whereas "facilitycl" is III. There is clearly an error. I want to know which variable is the more accurate one that I should I use for my research. Thanks.

New York City Bike Routes

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. There are clerical errors in the past versions of NYC Bike Routes, it was corrected in the 2022 data, segment ID 148078 is only class II. In this case, allclass is correct. We are currently working on correcting those errors as well as adding back install_date and modified_date. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Only $5 million in total contracts are reported for 2022, $32 million for 2021 and $7.4 billion for 2020, compared with $12-$18 billion for each of the three prior years. Is there a way to obtain access to more complete data for the last three years?

Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the Parking Regulation and Location Sign system does not provide latitude (lat) and longitude (long) information, only X,Y. New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) maintains a website for all New York City Parking Regulation Signs mapped, please visit: https://nycdotsigns.net/.
You may also use Geographic Information System (GIS) applications such as ESRI ArcGIS or the free open-source platform QGIS to process X,Y conversions to Lat, Long, some basic application knowledge is required, see information below:

1) Using ArcGIS- license required

Hope you're well! When I download the PLUTO data from the PLUTO specific site (https://www.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/dwn-pluto-mappluto.page), the data has ~250k rows. However, when I download it from the Open Data site (https://data.cityofnewyork.us/City-Government/Primary-Land-Use-Tax-Lot-Output-PLUTO-/64uk-42ks/data), it has 800k+ rows, almost quadrupling the number of tax lots covered. I was wondering what was behind this discrepancy? Thank you!

The Department of City Planning (DCP) just released the 22v3 version of PLUTO & MapPLUTO on our open data website - BYTES of the BIG APPLE. We just reviewed the download options; CSV, Shapefile and File GeoDatabase (FGDB) and they all have the accurate record counts 856,997 (shoreline clipped) or 857,213 (water-included). We are in the process of uploading the 22v3 version to the NYC Open Data Portal, which currently has version 22v2.

Please try downloading the data again from DCP's website. Please note if you are accessing the REST feature service version, sometimes that will time out and only display limited records but they are all there. We recommend downloading the CSV, Shapefile and File GeoDatabase (FGDB) version. If you have further questions please reach out to DCPopendata@planning.nyc.gov.

Field 'Violation Location (Street Name)', has a max string length of 28 characters. This results in entries such as
'INTERSECTION OF 56 STB AND S'

It is impossible to analyze the geolocation on examples like the above because the cross-street is not available within the string.

This problem can be observed on 33% of the dataset (15,337 entries with cut-off Violation Location strings)
Can you please update this field with a longer string length and the complete string entry for this field? We would appreciate it very much! Thank you.
