Hello,
My name is *****, and I'm an ***** at ***** in New York. Every month at *****, we publish an Index of thought-provoking statistics in print and online. For our upcoming issue, we’re interested in publishing DOE statistics on chronic absenteeism in NYC public schools. The Daily News had just done a study on this subject.
Could someone at the DOE please verify these numbers that we have from the Daily News article?
Before the pandemic, those who missed at least 10% of school days were at 25%. But by Fall 2021, that percentage was at 30%.
So far in 2022 [as of April when the article was published], that percentage is at 37%
The racial breakdown in that same time frame, Fall 2021, was as follows:
Black students: 33% 4 years before pandemic, to 40%
Hispanic students: 31% to 36%
Asian students: 13% to 14%
White students: 17% to 19%
English language learners: 27% to 36%.
Would these above stats be correct? Do you also have the latest 2022 numbers for the other categories as you have for the 2022 numbers for ELL students, which the Daily News reported as 40%?
Additionally, just to make sure, these statistics are for Fall 2020-Spring 2021, correct?
I’m also happy to communicate by phone ***** if that’s easier.
Thank you,
*****
