Edit:
Hi there,
Below find my previous question. I got the helpful response that murders are tracked differently than other complaint data, and that they're anonymized within the block that they occur so that you can't directly geocode them. I have two follow up questions on this.
I see that murders that occur in parks are geocoded to a nearby street. Is there any system to this, like the closest street, or could it be any street? I notice that the upper west side, for example, tends to have a much higher homicide count than the upper east side. Is there a way to know if the west side of the park is absorbing more central park murders than the east?
I'm also wondering if there's any way to tell whether a homicide happens on transit.
Thank you for all your assistance here!

Good afternoon,
I hope you're doing well! I see in the footnotes for the NYPD Complaint Historic dataset that complaints that occur in parks are geocoded to the nearest street intersection (rather than in the park itself). It appears that for most crimes, the field "PREM_TYP_DESC" indicates where the complaint happened (in a residence, on the street, in a park, etc.). This field is blank for every "murder & non-negligent manslaughter" charge however. I have two questions:
1. Is there a reason that no location is given for murder?
2. Is there a way to determine whether a murder happened in a park or not?
Thank you for your assistance!
Best,

Thank you for your interest in the NYPD Complaint dataset.
The records for murder/homicide are maintained separately from other complaints. As such, not all the same fields are tracked. As you noted, one of these fields is the prem_typ_desc, which s why it is null for these rows.
Furthermore, since each complaint is anonymized geographically by moving the incident to the closest mid-block point, there is no way to determine exactly where an incident occurred.
Thank you,

Edit/Follow-up Response:
Thank you for your inquiry on the NYPD’s Complaint Historic Dataset, with a focus on the “murder & non-negligent manslaughter” charges occurring in and around Central Park. As previously inquired, the murders are tracked and recorded differently than other complaints make the some of the data fields such as “PREM_TYP_DESC” have null values.
In regards to murders occurring in or around Central Park, a dataset was pulled for the calendar years of 2020 and 2021 to review the actual locations of the murders. During those years, no murders were in Central Park. A way to verify this with open data dataset is to look at the field “ADDR_PCT_CD” which indicates the precinct of occurrence. In this case, the number 22 is used for the Central Park Precinct, which there are no murders for those years.
When it comes to see if a crime happened in a transit jurisdiction, the field “JURIS_DESC” with the value “N.Y. TRANSIT POLICE” would be used.
Thank you again for your inquiry.
