Inquiry
we are working on a schoool project and are using this data set. We are curious what rank means in this data set. if all of the other variables are the same except from ethnicity, ranks are different. is rank only based on an isolated group of the ethnicity corresponding to that data point?

Please note the title of the dataset: Popular Baby Names by Sex and Ethnic Group, see the data dictionary and look at data itself.
Rank is the rank order of frequency of the baby name being used/given. The most frequent name used is ranked 1, 2nd most frequent, ranked 2, 3rd most frequent, ranked 3, and so on…
In this dataset, the ranks are by sex and Race/Ethnic group.
For example, in 2016, among Black Non-Hispanics girls, Ava is the most frequent baby name given, hence, ranked #1, with 121 babies given that name. Among Asian-Pacific Islanders girls, Olivia is the most frequency baby name given, hence, ranked #1, with 172 babies given that name.
