Inquiry
In the "vehicle type code" columns of the NYC traffic collisions dataset, how are vehicles belonging to multiple categories coded (for example an oversized taxi)? Does each column correspond to a specific vehicle (and therefore each vehicle only has one category)? If so, is there an order of precedenece in category assignment?
For example, some taxis are station wagons or SUVs. Is there a rule that determines when such a vehicle is marked "SPORT UTILITY / STATION WAGON" vs "TAXI"? And if so, are these rules specified someplace that I can access?
Assigned Agencys Response
Thank you for your question. The procedure is as follows: First a vehicle category must be selected from the following eight choices: 1. ATV, 2. Bicycle, 3. Car/SUV, 4. Truck/Bus, 5. Motorcycle, 6. E-bike, 7. E-scooter or 8. Other. Then a vehicle type is selected from the following six choices: 1. Convertible, 2. Limo, 3. Pick-up, 4. Sedan, 5. Station wagon/SUV or 6. Taxi. Since Car/SUV are grouped together in the vehicle category, it is not possible to determine if a taxi vehicle type was a car or SUV.
