Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Walknyc Base Map Data. The Walknyc Base Map Data is a series of Shapefile layers that makes up the Wayfinding maps that you see all over the streets of New York. The layers may include Bus Stops, Information Centers, Bike Lanes, Hospitals, Playgrounds, etc. Shapefile according to the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) is a simple, nontopological format for storing the geometric location and attribute information of geographic feature. The shapefile layers can be viewed and edited in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS (an ESRI software- licensed) or QGIS (an open source software- free).

I'm doing research comparing the minority-women-owned business dataset with the dataset of legally operated businesses (https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Business/Legally-Operating-Businesses/w7w3-xahh). Is it possible to obtain a minority-women-owned dataset which includes the business DCA License Number? My (perhaps incorrect) assumption is that the minority-women-owned dataset is a subset of the total legally operating business dataset. If you were to look for the count of New Building (NB) sites only, you could take this list and isolate to the count of unique buildings in the second column, which is "BIn #".

I have a question about the Daily Inmates in Custody data set.

Specifically, I have a question about the Inmate_Status_Code variable. I am wondering what DEP status means? It is described as a “Detainee - with Open Case & VP Warrant.” However, after much googling, I cannot figure out what a VP warrant is. Is it related to probation?

I am interested in determining the number of people in New York City jails with a probation hold. If DEP is not related to probation, are there any other variables or responses that are related to probation?

I have already asked a question about Rat Sightings :-) But I also use the data on Monthly Tonnage and I was curious to know why in the year 2003 there was sudden dip in recycling tons collected and a jump in refuse collected. This is sudden break from the overall pattern. Since I use this data set in a class I thought it would be useful to tell students about why they see that pattern. I have been using these data sets for several years now so if I get an answer later on, I can use it in the next semester :-)

McGraw-Hill is interested in potentially hiring us to compare schools that used their science curriculum with those who did not in New York City in terms of their Regents scores.

Do you have any base-provided definitions of Total Dispatched Trips and Total Dispatched Shared Trips? I'm specifically curious how Uber and Lyft define Dispatched Shared Trips. Hello, as you may recognize, downloading the entire file creates a very large size file. While you have likely downloaded the entire file successfully, opening the entire arrest dataset would exceed MS Excels capabilities. Depending on the amount of columns in the dataset, Excel usually caps at ~ 1 -2 Million rows as the maximum it can display on your screen. To view the entire file we would suggest using a open source text-editor that can handle millions of rows.

​For data manipulation, we suggest using the open data portal to sort, filter, count and visualize data or just downloading a subset of this data for use in excel. For more help with filtering or searching within a dataset, consult these video guides.

Almost all the condo building lots (WHERE lot >= 7501) are missing most of their data, including crucial fields that represent the lot area and dimensions, building stories, etc.

EXAMPLE:

However, in assessments data downloaded from nyc.gov these values are all present/non-zero.

I hope you can help with this as we recently converted our property feed to pull from this datasource and this is a major issue for us.

Thank you for reaching out about 2019 Taxi Trip Records. The TLC updates the raw trip record list twice a year in six month chunks. We publish January 1 - June 30 in July or August and July 1 - December 31 in January or February. There are always a few trips that bleed over into the next six months because of timestamp issues, those are the ~180 records that appear on or after July 1. You can expect the July 1 - December 31 2019 records to be published to Open Data and on the TLC's website after the start of the new year.

Thank you for reaching out about the TLC's FHV Trip Records. The pickup time field, as it is laid out in our data reporting specifications, is supposed to capture the moment the trip begins, not the time of the request. For the four app-based For-Hire Vehicle bases (Uber, Lyft, Via, and Juno) whose interfaces capture this information, we expect the pickup time to be fairly exact. For smaller traditional car service companies, it is possible that these times reflect estimates. Trip records for small bases are often transcribed from notes after a trip is completed.

Hi,
I am wondering why you changed the column names in the NYC collision dataset.
'date' was changed to 'accident_date' , 'time' to 'accident_time', and 'unique_key' to 'collision_id'.

It seems very inconsiderate to change these column names without informing developers and users beforehand.
Also the names make no sense. Why why use 'accident_date' for a collision dataset, when you don't know if it was an accident or not.

Ho long before you change more column names without informing developers. Why not upgrade to a new API version for the next changes.

Piers are included on the shoreline clipped version for our boundary files, which includes Police Precincts. There is a legitimate gap between a pier and the shoreline in Police Precinct 109, however, it should be coded as an internal water block (like the reservoir in Central Park) instead of being excluded from the the boundary. Once recoded, the file will no longer contain a hole. That update will be part of the 20A version which will be released in February 2020.

I'm working on a project to use machine learning to predict how long it would take for a given complaint to be inspected. I'm having some issues with understanding the data that are not well explained in the data dictionary. I was hoping to connect with the owner/maintainer of the dataset to better understand it.

I have the following questions:
1) There are discrepancies in the "complaint code" between the data dictionary and the codes actually in the dataset
2) There are a number of instances when a complaint is inspected BEFORE it was entered into the system. These are surely the result of occasional human error, but one zip code 11361 has an unusually high occurrence of this issue. Is there a reason for this? Are we misinterpreting the "date entered" and "date inspected"?
3) The "UNIT" column seems oddly specific at times and sometimes very generic (i.e. C&D vs. Manhattan). Is there any way to better distinguish which units are handling the complaint?
4) Lastly, what advice or common issues have other encountered when exploring these data?
