The data that is offered on the Open Data Portal is all the data DOT has available. A possible reason for the numbers being zero is that the weather might have affected the technology used to count pedestrians and caused it to be not operational during that time.

Entries submitted *after* November 1, 2018 are missing *a lot* of information compared to entries submitted *prior* to November 1, 2018, which appear to be more complete. I'm just wondering if this is intentional or if it is an error. Can we expect to have this issue resolved in the future? Thank you for your time.

Hi there! I am working on an augmented reality mobile app that relies on location data for monuments and historical plaques in NYC. I have some questions about the NYC Parks Public Art Map and database. Where does the location data come from? Do you have GPS coordinates available for each monument/artwork in the database? All I have been able to find thus far is descriptive locations (e.g, street corners). Additionally, can we use this data for our app? It is for a non-for-profit gender equality hackathon.

Thank you for your interest in the EMS Incident Dispatch dataset. The 83 disposition code is recorded in the incident data when a patient is without a heartrate upon arrival to the scene. The patient is not transported in this case. If the patient is not pronounced dead at the scene and transported to a hospital the incident disposition code will be 82. The patient’s care is then transferred to the hospital. The patient’s outcome under the hospital’s care is not reflected in this data. The 2018 data is available now.

I am trying to get data from the API, I have registered for an api token and initially I was only able to get 1000 records with no filters, now, for some reason I am getting 45 or less. I have tried with the CSV api as well and same similar results, very few records.

I'm trying to understand 'Stalled Construction.' The API reports (https://data.cityofnewyork.us/resource/m2i4-ujnn.json?complaint_number=2128373) multiple entries for the same site/complaint # - one for each day for many months in a row - and I'm trying to sort out the reason. Certainly there aren't complaints made that regularly. I can manually filter out all but the most recent but before I do anything like that I would like to be certain I understand them.

The Stalled Construction Site dataset is intended to show the sites that DOB is currently tracking. When a complaint is made, and DOB confirms that it is indeed a stalled site, it will remain on our list to be monitored until construction resumes. This dataset reports the entire list each day, so you will see the same locations popping up day after day.

You can filter most datasets on the open data portal by date. For today's data in our DOB Job Application Filings dataset, the field you would use depends on what you mean by "today's data". (Note that this dataset updates daily with yesterday's data, so there will be a delay on "today".)

You might want to use the following fields:
DOBRunDate, which indicates the date that the record was last updated on the open data portal.
Latest Action Date, which indicates the last date that the status of the application changed.
Fully Paid, which indicates the date that the application submission was complete at DOB.
SIGNOFF_DATE, which indicates that the job has been signed off as completed according to plans by the Department of Buildings.
There are a couple of other date options as well. Please check our data dictionary (Attachments section on the dataset profile page) for further details.

I noticed that the frequency of reports of contributing factors are very different before/after 2016. In mid-2016, almost all accidents had "unspecified" contributing factors, which was not the case from 2012 to 2015. Toward the end of 2016, reporting frequency for specific factors went up to levels similar to what was reported in 2017 and 2018. I've looked in the documentation but there was no information on changes in reporting instructions from the NYPD, and I haven't found any information online.

Hi,
We do not currently publish Place of Assembly data on the open data portal. We will be migrating these permits into our new DOB NOW system in December, and as a result of that, we will start releasing the new data through Open Data.

Even though the DOB NOW intake functionality will be released in December, I do not expect the data to be publicly available for about a year afterward. If you need the data quickly, I suggest you submit a FOIL request to us. Our analysts are more agile than setting up the IT infrastructure for open data, and we are happy to share the existing data manually through FOIL.

You're right. I've been spending so much time preparing for our new data model in DOB NOW that I forgot we had released it that way in the old data model. Yes, you can get existing Place of Assembly data that way. There will be a gap in time between when the old data stops and when the new data is published. Until then, please use the Job Applications dataset.

PA applications will be mandated to be submitted through DOB NOW starting on December 10. Any applications submitted before that through old systems will show up on open data.

For approved PA applications, you want to look at Job Status and Job Status Descrp. The statuses go in alphabetical order, so you want anything that is equal to or later than P.

The export options divide the data into two layers, layer_0 and layer_1. Layer_0 is single polygons, layer_1 is multipolygons. Only the "original" dataset (which exports as geojson) is the full DSNY districts for fall 2018. I'm may be the dumbest "Spatial Data Administrator" in the he history of DoITT, but I had to ogle this dataset over several occasions before I figured this out and I'm still probably wrong about it.

​​Thank you for contacting NYC Open Data Help Desk. The data is always up-to-date because DoITT pulls from our GeoJSON URL on a regular basis. Which export format (KML, KMZ, shapefile, GeoJSON) to use depends on what platform you are using to read the data, but they all export the entire dataset.
As for layer_0 and layer_1, we publish the entire dataset as one layer in one service. And it looks like it’s only available for the CSV, JSON, and another GeoJSON format.

Hi,

First, make sure that if you're looking for permits, you're looking at the right dataset. You need to look at DOB Permit Issuance.

Then instead of doing the visualization yourself, I suggest you start with this "Data Lens" of the Permit Issuance dataset. The second chart down on the left shows the number of permits per year.

If you're looking for anything more than that quick answer, we should discuss your needs. For example, starting in 2017, you're no longer looking at the full picture of permits because we are moving to our DOB NOW system which isn't captured in this dataset. Let me know if you have additional questions.

I downloaded the metadata, honestly. But I still don't know how to interpret area and length. What does an area of 26,107,944.6948 actually mean? (This is the first record, election district 23/001.)
Also, in terms of usability: (1) It would be very helpful to be able to filter the table. And (2) I thought all the wasted screen real estate in OpenData was pretty bad. But I was always dealing with tables. With a map like this, it's truly insane. Can somebody please allow a user to use all that white space? or open the map in another tab like an image file?

The area field is the area in square feet of each election district (i.e. Election District 23/001 is 26,107,944.6948 square feet). Length is the perimeter of the election district in feet.
This data is available as a shapefile so it can be displayed in any GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software like ESRI ArcMap, Carto, etc. You could also download it as a KMZ file and load it into google maps.

We're building a mobile App with instant notification system that allows construction workers to run project efficiently.
It includes Complaints, Items REquired, Violations DOB, Violations ECB.
The main sections that need the latest data to be displayed are Complaints and Items Required.

Currently, Complaints' Data Set was last Updated on October 24, 2018 (two weeks ago), when BIS (http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/bsqpm01.jsp) stays up to date.
That makes it impossible to use OpenData API for Complaints, as the Data is too old.

Can you please let us know if the update frequency is planned to be increased (once-twice daily)?
Is there any other resource that provides up to date Complaints API?

ORIGINAL QUESTION: Does the DOB Permit Issuance dataset have permits that have been applied for but not yet officially issued? I notice that the permit status can be set as "IN PROCESS" but I have no idea whether or not that would include everything waiting to be approved.

DOB Permit Issuance

Hi,
For this dataset, the process for pulling permits is that the applicant must submit an application to the Department of Buildings, either via paper in person or via our older online system. In Process means that the applicant submitted an application to request a permit, and we are working on the data entry and review of that application. It includes every permit application that has hit our database.
Thanks for asking! I just updated the Data Dictionary to clarify the above.
We are in the process of moving to a different system - DOB NOW, and permits in that system work a little differently. They can be found in our DOB NOW: Build – Approved Permits dataset.

DOB NOW still captures permits that are In Process, but because it's a digital system with no data entry required at Department of Buildings it works a little differently. Based on the type of permit, some permits are approved as soon as they are submitted, such as permits for Electrical work. Therefore, you won't see any In Process Electrical permits in DOB NOW.
