I am trying to use the open data sight however when you got to sort by date it does not sort correctly by date.

It is sorting by the day, instead of year. For example:

01/03/2018
01/03/2018
01/04/2017
01/04/2018
01/05/2016
01/05/2017
01/05/2018

and so on. Can someone please take a look and tell me if I am sorting incorrectly, or if the Open Data sight needs to be adjusted. Thank you.

Thank you for contacting NYC Open Data Help Desk. Please note that the Issue Date column is a text type and sorts the records based on alphanumeric values rather than chronologically. The text data type was chosen for the column specifically to allow the records that contain date errors entered by the officers (such as April 31 and other illegal values) to be added to the dataset that otherwise would be omitted due to a data type mismatch. You are encouraged to utilize a filter feature using the underlying dataset https://data.cityofnewyork.us/City-Government/Open-Parking-and-Camera-Violations/nc67-uf89 to search for the records based on specified criteria. There are inconsistencies in the data.

For example, there are about 15 data samples in 2018 that have Borough = STATEN ISLAND, but contain a GPS reference outside Staten Island.

For example:

05/09/2018,16:00,STATEN ISLAND,10304,40.74262,-73.75683,"(40.74262, -73.75683)",,,260 PARK HILL AVENUE ,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,Unspecified,,,,,3897310,SPORT UTILITY / STATION WAGON,,,,,"14,506",3,16,26,69

40.74262,-73.75683
is
218th St. near 73rd Ave in
Oakland Gardens, Queens

There is a 206 Park Hill Ave,
in Park Hill, Staten Island.

The GPS reference of the incident is different than the street address of the incident.

How is that possible?
Which is correct?

I would have thought that would be checked during data entry. What edits are performed during data entry to ensure viable data is in the database?

Thank you.

Hi,

Yes, you can search our data for the name and license of a contractor. You should note that for larger jobs where there are multiple licensed professionals, you might only find the main contractor listed.

For jobs, check out our DOB Job Application Filings and DOB NOW: Build – Job Application Filings. For permits, check out DOB Permit Issuance and DOB NOW: Build – Approved Permits.

Assigned Agencys Response
Hi,

We do not report on Affordable Housing in our data. There is a question on the general application, but the data is not suitable for release for a few reasons including that it's self-reported and that the definition is unclear. "Affordable Housing" means different things to different people. The most likely definition that you're looking for is the one governed by HPD and Local Law 44, so your best bet is to use their Housing Development Projects Receiving City Financial Assistance (Local Law 44) collection of datasets.

I am writing with a question about your Regents data. I am looking for school-level data for 8th grade science from the 2018-19 school year. It currently seems that data are available through the 2017-18 school year. Can you give me an approximate estimate for when 2018-19 data will be made available so that I can include those in an evaluation plan for McGraw-Hill?

Hello, I am using your crime map data for research at ***. With the crime map, some dates don't include certain data, for example some months don't have the murder or rape factor. Does that mean the data for that month was 0 for murders, or is it just not entered into the system? An example of this could be seen in the crime map, for the 102nd precinct from October 1, 2017- October 31, 2017. The data on crime is as follows:
22 Burglaries
16 Felony Assaults
25 Grand Larcenies
25 Grand Larcenies of Motor Vehicles
1 Murders
15 Robberies

Since there are no rapes mentioned, does this mean there were 0 rapes for the month of October 2017?

Thank you for contacting NYC Open Data Help Desk. If the crime category is not listed for the selected time period/precinct combination, this means that there were no crimes reported. In the above example, there were no rape crimes reported for the 102nd Precinct during the month of October 2017.

The numbers in the horizontal bar charts for Date would seem to be almost three times higher than from other sources.

Recreate:
1. NYC Open Data motor vehicle collisions:
https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/NYPD-Motor-Vehicle-Collisions/h9gi-nx95/data

2. Click Visualize > Launch Visualization and No Thanks for the sign in.

3. Select Date and the recommended horizontal bar chart.

4. A little awkward, so scroll down to Time Grouping (on the left) and click Group By Year.

The bar for 2017 shows 229,421 collisions. That sounds fantastically high.

If I then switch to the State Portal:
https://www.itsmr.org/TSSR/.
Click Crash Reports > NYC Crashes. I see about 82,286 collisions for 2017. (Which also seems unfortunately high.)

I always expect some disparity in statistics - different reporting styles, subtle differences in definitions, different time frames for inclusion, etc.

But, in this case, we appear to be off by a factor of almost three times! Similarly for preceding years. That piques my curiosity.

Problem is that I have no clue which numbers might be correct. Can you offer any advice? I expect that my City and my State should agree about some basic stats, at least within the same number of digits :-)

Thanks.

The error is in the pie-chart visualization of the data; I do not know if the data, itself, is invalid.

To recreate error:
1. Visit NYC Open Data Vehicle Collision Data:
https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/NYPD-Motor-Vehicle-Collisions/h9gi-nx95/data
2. Click Visualize, then Launch New Visualization. (I then clicked No Thanks for the sign on).
3. Add filter on Date from 09/01/2018 to 09/14/2018.
4. Select Contributing Factor Vehicle 1.
5. Select Pie Chart.

It shows 51%, 8108 "Other"; 13%, 2130, "Distracted", etc.

Now, scroll to the bottom where it lists the table data; at bottom, it says:
Showing rows 1-18 out of 8,574

So, the table data indicates there are 8,574 records in my result set.
The pie chart shows over 10,000 records in the first two slices, alone!

That would appear to be a serious data presentation error.

The horizontal bar chart shows much more reasonable results.

Side Notes:
A. All charts should summarize the description of the chart, right above the chart - a title, if you like - of the form:
NYC Collision data - <filters, esp. the date range> - Total result set size: 8574 incidents
(it should be obvious when looking at a chart "Of What", and "How Many").

B. There should be a data key available to describe each value in each column, when there is an enumerated list. For example, what, exactly, is meant by "Unsafe Speed"? By "Passing or Lane Usage Improper"?

Thank you for contacting NYC Open Data Help Desk. We have forwarded your inquiry to Socrata, and after further investigation they have identified a bug. The error is caused by the fact that all the records with no values in the Contributing Factor Vehicle 1 column are included in the visualization regardless whether these records fall between the dates specifies in the filter. Socrata created a ticket to fix this bug. Meantime, you are encouraged to exclude those records that have no corresponding value in the Contributing Factor Vehicle 1 column from your filter.

Hi! Do the emission factors include Transmissions and distribution losses and/or Well-To-Tank emissions (emissions from producing the fuels combusted in generators).

Thank you for contacting NYC Open Data Help Desk. The electricity emission factors do not account for T&D losses and do not account for lifecycle emissions of fuel production upstream of combustion. What are the definitions of the "street code" columns (there are 3)?

I'm trying to determine GPS coordinates or how to map these rows.

For example, if
Street Code1 = 10,510
Street Code2 = 34,870
Street Code3 = 34,890

how should I use those above values to determine the location of the parking violation?

Thank you!

Assigned Agencys Response
The three data fields (Street Code1/Code2/Code3) are GIS coordinates of the location where the violation was issued and intersecting street boundaries. There is a data key attached to the data set. The data set reflects only parking tickets issued in NYC. The data is provided by NYC’s database of record for parking tickets.

Dataset Url

Assigned Agencys Response
There was no redistricting of the election districts between 2014 and 2018 so they will be virtually identical. Generally, the election districts would only change after a Census update (2-3 years after, i.e. 2010 Census -> redistrict in 2012 or 2013).

The election districts are aligned with the City Street Centerline dataset so if there was a slight adjustment to the street centerline, the election district boundaries would reflect that adjustment.

We also make archived versions of the all of our district boundary files available here:
https://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-...
-Search for Election district - there are quarterly updates to the centerline file so you will see four versions of all the district boundary files available for each year (i.e. Election District for 2014 will have a 14A, 14B, 14C & 14D version available).

You can enter the recommended visualization tool here: https://nycopendata.socrata.com/d/fhrw-4uyv/visual...

To isolate 2018 311 complaint data, I would filter "created date" from 1/1/2018 to 9/12/2018 using the filter button that will appear at the top left of the page. The second filter I would add is to select "incident zip" - "is" - "10280"

There about 369 complaints to date for that zip code area btw..

Please use this link for instructions on how to navigate the visualization canvas and customize filter etc https://support.socrata.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000813847-Creating-a-Visualization-in-the-New-Visualization-Canvas

To whom it concerns,

I hope all is going well on your end. I am reaching out to you to see if there is any hate crime data at the city level in which the motivation would be oriented to nationality or legal status (i.e. immigrant)? I ask because I am working on several projects with my colleagues concerning hate crime and anti-immigrant hate crime, yet most major LEAs do not collect data on these types of motivations.

Is there anyway to dig into the incident particulars to see if EITHER such a motivation exists, or whether the victim was in fact a non-citizen/immigrant/etc.?

I am trying to essentially figure out a way to approximate for anti-immigrant hate crime in lieu of existing data; as many scholars will make the false assumption that anti-Arab, anti-Hispanic, or anti-Muslim hate crime is synonymous with anti-immigrant hate crime.

Any thoughts you can provide as to this inquiry would be greatly appreciated.

,

Hello, my name is . I work with at UNHP and have been looking into the DOB Open Data as well.

We looked into aggregating on BIN and ran into some new questions for you. We looked up all associated BINs on DOB BIS and the combined number of violations across BINs does look correct. We noticed, however, that sometimes associated BINs corresponded to different BBL’s. We figured this must be due to merged tax lots; however, when we consulted Oasis the lots are still shown as separate. For example, when you look up the BBL 2031120025 on DOB BIS there are 2 BINs associated, 2013017 and 2013018. However, the BBL on the BIS page of second BIN is 2031120030. On the Oasis map it shows the lots as separate, but they do have the same owner. Similarly for the BBL 3003550036 there are 2 associated BINs, 3004928 and 3339575. When the Open Data DOB table is filtered for these bins 3 additional BBLs are associated, 3003550018, 3003550021, and 3003550030. On Oasis these lots are all shown as distinct except for 3003550021, which appears to have been merged with another lot. Only 3003550030 and 3003550018 have the same owner. We group our data based on BBL because we are interested in violation and registration data organized by the owner of the entire lot. So it’s concerning to us that in the above examples, we’re having trouble translating a total number of violations by BIN to that of BBL.

Is this issue part of the reason that you have suggested we filter the DOB & ECB Open Data by BIN? If so, do you have a sense of the frequency of the above issue, (i.e. when one BIN is associated with multiple BBLs when we search through the various data sources)? Thanks again for your patience in working with us on this – we don’t expect the DOB data to be perfect, but it helps to have a sense of the frequency of irregularities that we’re seeing when we try to group violation data by BBL.

I know this is a bit confusing to try and flush out over email. Would you be available to meet with us in person or talk over the phone?

Thanks again,

Assigned Agencys Response
Hi,

No problem. Happy to help.

For question 1, you're running into BBL vs BIN issues again. I really recommend that you look at our data by BIN because that's what we use as a key in all of our datasets. I did a quick check on the 3 BBLs that you provided for the ECB data and here's what I found:

• 1021230030: Missing ECB # 34076127J has a 0 block 0 lot on open data (data error), but the BIN matches the data in BIS
• 2031120025: I didn’t see any that were missing when comparing open data to BIS
• 3022640061: Missing ECB # 35274824Z has a lot of 7517 (lots that start with 7 indicate a condo apartment), but the BIN matches the data in BIS
For question 2, it's not duplication. ECB and DOB are two different types of violations. So when you see the same BIN in both datasets on the same date, it means that there were 2 violations issued that day. The 2 violations might be for the same issue, but they might carry separate fines and they get resolved differently.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
.........................................
Hi,

This is why we use BIN as our unique ID. BINs shouldn't ever change. In our violations data, we are reporting the BBL at the time of the violation. This dataset doesn't update if there's a lot split or merger down the road.

I think that explains everything that you're seeing. If you have any more questions, it might be best to have a phone conversation. You can reach me at 212-393-2772 or cnicklin@buildings.nyc.gov. Please don't share this widely as I would rather triage questions from outside the agency through the Open Data portal.

If you want the permit/application history for the entire building, you can get that on open data. You would need to search as follows:

Approved job applications in DOB Job Application Filings:
Filter by Bin # = 1019088 (You could filter by address, but you might miss some records because of differences in the way the data was entered, such as E. 37TH STREET vs EAST 37TH STREET)
Filter by Job Status Descrp. You want to see SIGNED OFF, PERMIT ISSUED - ENTIRE JOB/WORK, PLAN EXAM - APPROVED, PERMIT ISSUED - PARTIAL JOB, PLAN EXAM - PARTIAL APPROVAL, or COMPLETED.
Permits issued in DOB Permit Issuance:
Filter by Bin # = 1019088 (You could filter by address, but you might miss some records because of differences in the way the data was entered, such as E. 37TH STREET vs EAST 37TH STREET)
Thank you,

I wanted to report an encoding issue in some of the "violation descriptions". It appears to be with the degree character, and looks something like this: "Hot food item not held at or above 140º F."

Hi there! Thank you very much for providing and updating this dataset. I'm curious if when data is added if it's only forward in time. For example, if I fetch the dataset today, and then tomorrow ask for all new data that has an inspection date greater than the previous day, will I have missed any data? Said differently, is new data added retroactively? If so, how retroactive can the inspected_at dates be?

Thank you for your inquiry. This dataset is updated daily to account for new inspection data as well as changes to historic inspection data resulting from adjudication. The adjudication process typically takes 2 months or less. However, it can take longer and there is no time limit on how far back data can be updated if changes occur.

There is a massive subset of records in this dataset that are erroneous. I know this because I've been importing this dataset everyday for the past few years and I know how the data is supposed to appear. Yesterday there appeared tens of thousands of records with ticket number that are less than 10 characters. To see this for yourself, do a search where 'Violation Details = Batch insert' or 'Violation Details = document printed'. The viol #s are only 7 digits and most of the other field are blank.

Thank you for contacting NYC Open Data Help Desk. Please note the following:

1. The 10-digits tickets numbers are applicable only to the ECB violations. Ticket numbers appearing as alphanumeric strings or shorten values are summonses from other agencies (DCA, DOHMH, TLC).

2. “NOT NYC” in Borough column appears for all TLC summonses because NYCServ doesn’t have a borough field.

3. For TLC summonses Violation Details Column:
a) Document Printed - the decision was not picked up by the respondent, it was printed and mailed to the address on file.
b) Decision Printed - respondent signed out for the decision following the hearing.
c) Batch Insert - summons was entered into NYCServ.

Please note that this dataset has recently undergone a major revision with additional summonses from DCA, DOHMH and TLC added. Agency is currently in the process of reviewing and correcting discrepancies.

Thank you,
- NYC Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH)

Unfortunately, we do not maintain those codes in our Location Management Systems, so we would not be able to provide them

, then which job status codes should be filtered and selected ? I am confused with similar codes like completed, signed off, appoved, permit.?
I am referring to job application filing table data.
Previous question asked as below. Just for your information.
How do I know based on data if the building or a structure is building of public assembly (Occupying more than 75 people) ? Which data set field has this information of maximum allowed occupancy for a customer / or entity.

Hi,

I understand. You're looking for buildings that have been issued a Place of Assembly Certificate of Operation. This information is not currently available in open data. We will review your request to add this dataset. Place of Assembly certificates are applied for with a PA1 form, which is not currently in our open data. We do plan to add this to DOB NOW, our new online application system, and the data will be published at that time. Until then, if you need the data, please request it through our FOIL process.

Thank you,

DOF – thank you for the response for dataset and the header information – however can you help with the questions? =

1) There is year in the dataset for 2009. Does the data contain information contain values for the most recent tax year?
2) I do not see the Owner Address – do you have that information?

Thank you.

Assigned Agencys Response
This file does not have the owner's address when it is different from the property address.
Property valuation and assessment data after 2009 can be found on the NYC Department of Finance website,
https://www1.nyc.gov/site/finance/taxes/property-assessments.page
Please look there for more current data while we update the files on the Open Data Portal.

NYC DOF
