Inquiry
Thank you for responding to my previous email.
I need to calculate Net new construction using NYC Open Data, and I’d like to know if this can be done simply by subtracting Demolition of an existing Building from New Building? (i.e. Net new construction = NB-DM).
Also, would you consider Added units due to Alterations of existing buildings, which is another variable I’m working with comparable to A1, which in the NYC Open Data represents A major alteration that changes the use of occupancy of the building?
Thanks again for your assistance

Hi,
Net new construction isn't really something that we measure, so it's difficult to answer your question. It depends on what you're trying to measure.
If you are measuring new building structures, NB - DM could give you the net increase, so it sounds like your formula would work. I would not include A1 because it's not a change in the number of building structures. But be aware that submitting a job application or even getting a permit does not necessarily mean that the work will be completed. We are planning to add the "Sign Off" date which indicates completion of the job, but that isn't currently available in open data.
If you are instead measuring an increase or decrease in housing, you should also look at dwelling units. For this measurement, I would include A1 because that can have an increase or decrease in dwelling units. This measurement contains the same caution as above that permitting does not mean the job will be completed. It also contains a caution that the number of existing and proposed dwelling units is self-reported on the original application in our Job Application data. As the job progresses, it is possible that the plans will change and the number of units will change, but this does not get reported back to open data.
I hope that helps.
Thank you,
