<p>Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The organization serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The organization’s annual operating budget is over $30 million. Serving more than 87,000 New Yorkers annually, New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 290, supported by 2,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. <p><strong>Job Description:</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p>NYLAG’s Immigrant Protection Unit (IPU) is seeking 3 interns to support NYCitizenship, a partnership between NYLAG and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Through NYCitizenship, NYLAG Attorneys and Community Navigators provide citizenship legal services to thousands of immigrant New Yorkers annually at library branches throughout the City. Interns will be based at NYLAG’s main office in the Financial District, but may also have the opportunity to visit the library branches. Interns will work directly with the program staff to facilitate the processing of applications for citizenship, client relations and other administrative work on an ad hoc basis. Training will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for those seeking experience in an office environment, have an interested in immigration advocacy, access to representation, and enjoy working with a diverse population. The internship program can be connected to an academic program or for experiential learning and is unpaid. <p><strong>Duties and Responsibilities:</strong></p>
<p>Provide application support to immigrants eligible for citizenship, including, but not limited to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Assisting clients to obtain the documents necessary for their applications for naturalization</li>
<li>following up with clients via phone, mail and email regarding upcoming appointments and document collection</li>
<li>Informing clients of biometrics and interviews with the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS)</li>
<li>Creating and maintaining physical and electronic files, including documenting correspondence with immigration and other agencies</li>
<li>Providing referrals for financial empowerment and other wraparound services</li>
<li>Other administrative duties as assigned</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Qualifications:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>College degree in progress in any field of study</li>
<li>Can commit to work at least 2 days or 15 hours per week</li>
<li>Fluency is helpful in at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Haitian-Creole</li>
<li>Interest in working with immigrant populations</li>
<li>Passion for immigration advocacy and access to legal services is a must</li>
