Boiler Inspections

The City installs and maintains bike parking and lanes, provides regulations for bike traffic, and runs programs to keep cyclists safe. <p>The City provides free bicycle helmets and fittings to New York City residents. The City also distributes a free copy of a bicycle map.<br /><br />The City installs public bike racks on City property. You may also request an application package to install a private bike rack. The package includes the required procedures, permit application, and insurance form.<br /><br />The City responds to reports that a City-owned bike rack needs repair, removal or relocation. If a privately-owned bike rack is broken, report the problem to the manager of the building next to the rack. If you do not know who manages the building, you can check the Department of Finance's property information records online.<br /><br />To request a new bike lane on a street, contact your local community board, a Council Member, or a Department of Transportation Borough Commissioner.</p>

Some buildings with structural damage can be repaired. Blocked Sidewalk or Street Complaint

Report a blocked sidewalk or street.

<p>You can make a complaint about blocked streets and sidewalks.</p> <p>Property owners and businesses must keep sidewalks clear of objects that block pedestrian traffic. Objects can include:</p> <ul> <li>Trash or recycling cans</li> <li>Basketball hoops</li> <li>Barbecue grills</li> <li>Other personal property</li> </ul> <p>Trash containers, including garbage dumpsters, may only be placed on the sidewalk at specific times.</p> <ul> <li>Residential Properties: You may place trash containers out starting at 4 PM the evening before the collection day.</li> <li>Commercial Properties: You may place trash containers out for collection 1 hour before an establishment closes if the private carter picks up after closing or within 2 hours of the actual collection if the private carter picks up during the day.</li> </ul> <p>Stores are allowed to have outside displays of merchandise, but they may extend no more than 3 feet into the sidewalk from the building and no higher than 5 feet. ATMs must be placed behind the building's property line or inside the building.
