Snow Removal Employment

<p>You can register as a temporary snow laborer to remove snow and ice from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants, and other locations throughout the City. To register, go in person to a Sanitation Garage or a Department of Transportation Garage Monday through Saturday between 7 AM and 3 PM, except on City holidays.</p> <p>You must be:</p> <ul> <li>At least 18 years of age</li> <li>Eligible to work in the United States</li> <li>Able to perform heavy physical labor</li> </ul> <p>You must bring with you:</p> <ul> <li>Two small photos (1.5 inch square). Through the Trees and Sidewalks Repair Program, the City performs free repairs for qualifying broken sidewalks severely damaged by curbside tree roots in front of one, two, and three family homes only. An official inspection of the broken sidewalk will determine if it qualifies for free repair and will rank the tree based on the level of activity on the street, the amount of sidewalk damage, and the tree's overall health. The program will repair the sidewalks with the highest priority first.<br /><br />Owners of commercial properties, co-ops, condos or residential properties with four or more units do not qualify for the Trees and Sidewalks Repair Program but can request a sidewalk tree consultation with the City. The inspector will give you advice about how to repair the sidewalk without damaging the tree.<br /><br />The City no longer permits root slicing or root pruning of City trees. Post-Disaster Housing Prototype and Tour

Information about a prototype the City is developing to temporarily house New Yorkers displaced by disaster.

<p>The City is developing a way to offer better temporary housing to residents who have been displaced by a disaster. Following an open design competition, testing has begun for a prototype multi-story, multi-family interim housing, which residents could use after emergency sheltering.</p> <p>The model prototype is located on the corner of Cadman Plaza East and Red Cross Place in Brooklyn and will remain up until April, 2015. The prototype will open its gallery to the public from 11 AM to 1 PM. Group tours will be available on weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM by appointment only.</p>

Seniors that live in rent-regulated apartments and qualify for the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program can have their rent frozen at their current level and be exempt from future rent increases.

<p>The Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE, also known as the NYC Rent Freeze Program) freezes the rent for head-of-household seniors 62 and older who live in rent-regulated apartments. Preventing HIV and AIDS using PrEP and PEP

Information about PrEP, a daily pill that can help prevent HIV, and PEP, medicine that helps prevent HIV infection after possible exposure.

<p>PrEP, or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a daily pill that can help prevent HIV infection. PrEP is for HIV-negative people who may be exposed to HIV through sex or injecting drugs and who are ready to take a daily pill.</p> <p>If you think you have been exposed to HIV, go immediately to a clinic or emergency room and ask for PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, includes medicines that help prevent HIV infection after a possible exposure. Emergency PEP should be started right away, and no more than 36 hours after exposure. Your doctor will help decide if PEP makes sense for you.</p> <p>In New York State, most insurance plans, including Medicaid, cover PrEP and PEP. If you do not have insurance, there are medical clinics that can help you get PEP.</p> <p>Health service providers and community organizations can order pamphlets, postcards, and posters to help promote public awareness of both PrEP and PEP.</p>
