Description
Featuring work by: Erin Butler, Linda Butti, Mary Campbell, Lisa Dahl, Griselda Healy, Craig Manister, Ann Marie McDonnell, Mike Shane, Gayle Tanaka, Martha Trivizas. Celebrating Snug Harbor’s longstanding studio program, where artists in residence create new work within its historic buildings, PROXIMITY explores the studio as a generative space: artists working near one another across space, time, and relationship. Spanning painting, photography, and mixed media, PROXIMITY is not defined by a shared aesthetic, but by a condition of closeness. Here, proximity becomes more than a matter of place—it becomes a context through which individual practices develop, intersect, and inform one another.  When: October 2 - December 13Fridays & Saturdays, 12:00 PM-7:00 PM | Sundays, 11:00 AM- 5:00 PMWhere: Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Main Hall Gallery, Building C  (View Site Map and Directions)Admission:$5.00 – General Admission$4.00 – Students/SeniorsPlease note: On October 16, we will host an opening reception for PROXIMITY from 6-8 PM. Visiting during those hours will be free. Please RSVP to the reception here: https://snug-harbor.org/event/proximity-opening-reception/ PROXIMITY is made possible through generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation.

Description
As part of the public programming for Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s High Line Plinth commission, The Light That Shines Through the Universe, the High Line presents a monthly lecture and guided meditation series at the Spur. Presented in partnership with the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, the series invites visitors to engage more deeply with themes central to Nguyen’s work. Each session features a lecture by a scholar, artist, or cultural leader, followed by a guided meditation led by an invited practitioner. The series is hosted by Tashi Chödrön, Himalayan Programs and Communities Ambassador at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, who, in her two decades with the Rubin, has led meditation programs for over ten years and is the current host of the Rubin’s Mindfulness Meditation podcast. Through this combination of intellectual and contemplative practice, the series invites audiences to pause, reflect, and consider the artwork’s historical and philosophical themes through both thought and experience.Closing the series, Nico Rodriguez, deputy director of Monuments Lab, considers Nguyen’s work alongside contemporary artistic approaches to memorialization. The discussion explores how artists reimagine monuments to war by transforming sites of violence into spaces for remembrance, reflection, and collective healing. The lecture will be followed by a guided meditation by Steve Clorfeine, a meditation teacher from the Shambhala tradition with over 40 years of experience.Rain date: October 11, 2 – 3pm

Description
Take a docent led tour of the Conference House Museum also known as the Billiopp House located on Staten Island, New York and overlooking the Raritan Bay. This two-story grand fieldstone house was built by powerful landowner Royal Navy Captain Christopher Billopp About 1680. He wanted a home that would be an expression of his massive wealth, as well as a symbol of the stability of the colonies.  Nearly a century later the Billopp House had become a center of colonial hospitality. Billopp’s great-grandson, loyal to the crown, offered his ancestral family home as the site of a meeting of great importance. It is Named The Conference House because it is the site of the only Peace Conference of the American Revolution. Continental Congress representatives Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge met here with British Admiral Lord Howe at his request on September 11,1776 in an unsuccessful effort to stop the American Revolution. The Americans had already written and signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4,1776 and their course would not be altered. Though the group discusses options for a peaceful cessation of hostilities, no agreement was reached and the fighting continued for seven years.Today the Conference House Museum presents an interpretation of an 18th century colonial manor to the general public. The building is owned by NYC Parks and operated by the Conference House Association as a historic house museum in partnership with the Historic Trust of NYC.

Dive into the history of the enigmatic Ouija board, and learn how spirit communication became a phenomenon that swept the nation.  Today a trademarked game owned and manufactured by Hasbro, Ouija has a history that stretches back to the 19th century. At one time, the "talking board" outsold Monopoly—appearing in silent films, Valentine's Day greeting cards, popular sheet music, and even a Norman Rockwell illustration.   Get an up-close look at more than a dozen vintage boards—all with their own unique design and aesthetic—that have dazzled the curious and mystified skeptics for more than one hundred years.  When:October 11 | 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmWhere: Carpenter’s Shop (View Site Map and Directions)Admission: General Admission: $30.00Student/Senior: $30.00Snug Harbor Member: $25.00 (With Promo Code)
